Wow. How can a REPORTER get something like this so wrong?? I'm speechless.

Honestly, try to get updates from Nancy Hixt. She is covering the case and she does a wonderful job reporting. Perfect mix of facts and compassion.

regarding Sara and Downey possibly being a couple... here's what police said initially:

“We believe that Mr. Downey is known to all three; Sara, Taliyah and the father Colin, we believe that to be the case… [but] I don’t know what the level of trust would have been there.”

It seems they were wrong about Colin, but, in any case, It looks like the police definitely did not believe them to be a couple.

You would think a reporter would have nailed down by now how they knew each other. It's not usually a hard thing to find out.

I believe that Freddy Krueger had been released on a technicality, but I'm not aware of real life examples of that happening. There was that man in the UK, Butler, but his main defense was his besotted wife who couldn't believe he'd hurt their child.

Are you seriously telling me you don't believe any murderers have walked because of a technicality?

Go to Google and type: murderers acquitted on technicality

I don't believe I saw Freddy Kruger in the first 10 pages.

CBC News has been invited to attend and record today's funeral for Sara and Taliyah. (Source.)
The headline says it will be "broadcast live" and the article says "livestreamed."
Time is 2:00 Mountain (4 Eastern, 3 Central, 1 Pacific)

The word seems to be that Downey's lawyer is top notch. I doubt that's going to help him. I do have to wonder who is paying. Probably not Downey. It's interesting that for all the money they make these criminals are almost always broke.

Some details on Downey's first, brief court appearance here: Famed_Canadian_defence_team...

They are top notch. Legal aid has a cap on its hourly rate and I'm pretty sure Gavin and his dad are above it. Maybe his "friends" have a legal fund.

It's a high-profile case so the Wolchs are probably doing it for the exposure. I think the options for who is paying are "nobody," or "legal aid," but you never know, I suppose.

They don't need exposure. Hersh Wolch has been practicing Criminal Law for 50 years, he's one of the top defense attorneys in the country

They are running a business that is actively seeking clients. If you're running a business, you need exposure. Just because he's been practising law for 50 years, doesn't mean every criminal who needs a lawyer has heard of him.

This thread is dedicated to discussion of the Taliyah Marsman and Sara Baillie case, not to go on about our personal opinions of defence lawyers in general. The accused has one. Period.

Off-topic posts have been removed (and yes, one of them was mine). Please stay on topic.

Yeah, Princessbuttercup, that was a (bad) joke. Not really a time for jokes, so bad idea, I guess.... anyway...

The statement preceding the celebration of life was brief and was given by Sara's mother, Janet Fredette, in a wavering voice.
Sara's brother was on one side her, and I would guess the gentleman on the other side was Janet's husband.
Here's the complete text:
We are, of course, overcome with grief by the unnecessary loss of two beautiful members of our family.
Despite our grief, we are also overwhelmed by the strength that this community has given us.
The Calgary police service, our friends, and hundreds, if not thousands, of unknown community members, have shown us how to be strong.
Thank you for your support Calgary, and all of Canada. Thank you.

Thanks for insights on not posting personal opinions about defence lawyers in general, but I have to wonder if there's something more to this given the choice of lawyers. This, in particular, catches my attention:

"He’s one of the most respected names in the Canadian legal world — a name also known by regular people across the country for helping such wrongfully convicted as David Milgaard, Steven Truscott and Guy Paul Morin gain their freedom."

http://calgaryherald.com/news/local...efence-lawyer-to-take-on-taliyah-marsman-case

Is there already an argument against the charges? That is, is there some clear information that points away from the accused? Was this murder for hire of the mom, and the child was murdered by another person? Was he asked to pick up the child, placing him at the scene of the crime, but someone else committed the murder? Was he asked to pick up the child, discovered mom murdered, delivered the child to a second person? Hiring lawyers who specialize in wrongful convictions sort of sets the stage for wrongful charges - and that there is more to the story.

This choice of lawyer also implies "tunnel vision", which I believe is something that prosecutors across Canada were well-educated on due to the Guy Paul Morin fiasco. Is the Morin case too long ago, such that prosecutors have forgotten the lessons learned?

Is the father a person of interest, or cleared of all involvement?

Have they released the cause of death for either of them yet?
