This has just taken a very drastic turn and an extremely bold
One at that!! Someone with some huge cajones(or more accurately probably is that they are just defiantly twisted in the head) to actually author such a letter not to the press, but rather to the LE agency incharge of Taylor's case!! With bold and outright threats of continued attacks of violence on females in the community!!

I am praying to God this is not actually from the perp who attacked and killed Taylor but rather is some nutjob looking to get in on the already existing case.. Which IMO would therefor likely mean the threats are not real or intended.. But it certainly seems as tho the investigators of this case are strongly believing(for reasons unbeknownst to us)that the letter is from the actual perp that attacked and killed Taylor.. I wonder what it is that has them so convinced it's authentic?? I'd say it's a very real possibity that that "IF" this letter is from the actual killer of Taylor that in order for them to get the intended satisfaction they so desired that they very likely would have made a statement about the crime or the victim that ONLY THE KILLER WOULD KNOW(meaning that relayed details LE had made sure to keep close to the vest AND NOT PUBLICLY KNOWN BY ANYONE OTHER THAN OFCRS ON THE CASE!!

I have a feelings it's possibly something similar that was in the letter and therefor I do totally understand LE's extreme worry and major warnings of caution to females in the area at this time.. Due to their having knowledge that confirms to them it's the killer who is making these threats to harm other young females!!

I've not seen a case similar to this in a very long time!! Someone either truly criminally insane or possibly a young man truly obsessed with the stalker type horror movies and is truly attempting to live out a life long fantasy of his own horror movie complete with innocent young females as his victims!! :chilling: .. But IMO extremely possible as well..

What happens next?

VANCOUVER(NEWS1130) - Mounties still aren't sure if the letter they got from someone claiming to be 18-year-old Taylor Van Diest's killer is real.

She was murdered Halloween night while walking to meet some friends. The letter was delivered to the Armstrong detachment yesterday. Corporal Dan Moskaluk wants to speak with whoever wrote it.

"The investigators would like the writer to contact them by telephone or letter as they would like to create a dialogue to prevent any further violence," Moskaluk said. "If anyone is aware of the identity of the author of this letter we strongly urge them to contact the police. "

Moskaluk is asking everyone in the city to be vigilant and to continue to take extra personal safety precautions

Seems to me that if no one phones or emails LE,then they will have no way of being sure that the letter came from the real perp and not some "copy-cat" trying to steal his/her "glory".Imo.

RCMP in the north Okanagan are not sure if a letter purported to be written by the killer of teen Taylor Van Diest is authentic.

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said at a news conference Thursday that there were very few details of the crime in the disturbing letter, which arrived at the Armstrong detachment on Wednesday.

Investigators are urging the letter writer or anyone else who knows the person to call police immediately.

"As previously stated, the RCMP is taking the appropriate precautionary step of advising the public of the threatening nature of the letter," Moskaluk said. "We are asking that the general public remain vigilant and continue to take extra personal safety precautions in our communities, particularly in the Central and North Okanagan."

A designated tipline for the Van Diest murder investigation was set up Thursday. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-888-688-4264.

Here is a link to a video of today's RCMP press conference:

http://youtu.be/wAVuFdQtQWg

To emphasize what was already been posted, in the presser they mention wanting to create a dialogue with the letter writer.

Also, when referring to the launch of a tip line, Cpl Moskaluk says that they want to funnel all messages and all tips, related to the case, to the tip line.

For everyone's information, the tip line is:
1 888 688 4264

I am curious if the perp/s would be more or less inclined to "create a dialogue" if the message was given by a female LE representative?

  • #87
The letter writer didn't seem to know any crime specific details:

Cops are hoping to hear from the letter-writer again.

“The letter contains very limited information regarding details of this crime. As a result we are unable to confirm that the letter was, in fact, written by the perpetrator,” said Moskaluk at an evening press conference.

“We would like to hear from the writer again. The investigators would like the writer to contact them by telephone or letter as they would like to create a dialogue to prevent any further violence.

Thank you guys for these latest updates.. Seems as tho they're not so certain the letter is authentic.. And I too find it much more likely that the author of this letter IS NOT IN ANYWAY INVOLVED IN TAYLOR's MURDER.. if they did IMO they would have been certain to ensure it being known they were who they were claiming to be(the killer) and this would have been extremely easily to ensure by stating if just only one tiny detail that they as the perp know, know that LE OFCRS working this case know, but most Importantly know that NO ONE ELSE OTHER THAN THOSE VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW!

So, moo but I'm betting on this letter having nOT been authored by anyone involved in Taylors murder.. But I do know this for certain.. With it not being the killer that the moron(s) who chose very stupidly to write this letter will be very easily found and outted
And IMO it will not be that far off in the future that they are brought to the light of day and very unfortunately for their future they will forever be known as the absolute moronic idiots who "chose" to make light of this beautiful young girl's horrific murder!

I don't know, I think the letter writer is actually the killer.

If it is not, then there are at least 2 people with something going on with them.

I fear the letter writer will indeed send another message.

I have no idea whether the letter writer (and somehow I think it's just one person) is Taylor's murderer or not. The two most likely scenarios \I see are:

1) The writer isn't the perp, but has serious mental health issues. I don't think it's written as a lark by some 'moronic idiot'. I don't think a moronic idiot would have delivered it to LE, but would have more likely been seeking publicity and would have sent it to the media.

2) The writer is the perp and knew Taylor, so is trying to create a distraction.

All MOO!

ETA: I think that LE has brought in the behavioral specialists and they advised them as to the wording of their press conference to increase the chance that the writer will contact them again soon, in case it's scenario #1. They did this with the recent Kienan Hebert kidnapping case in Sparwood BC (with Cpl Moskaluk doing the talking in that case too). Happily there was a great outcome in that case.

IMO the letter is an attempt at deflecting suspicion. Which in turn makes me think that this was a specific attack by someone know to Taylor. But, the perp wants it to appear to be random.

it could be someone she knew who murdered her and a random whackjob who sent the letter which means there are two dangerous creeps in the area

*shudder*

JMO i don't understand why some sort of perimeter was'nt set up, the fireworks had'nt started, so traffic would of been incoming, so checking outgoing would of been fairly easy, and at evenings end there is only a few major routes out of town. Maybe just not enough man power.
I have seen no mention of a weapon, and it dos'nt seem to be a robbery. I still can't figure why she was on the tracks -unless Taylor took Rosedale Ave and then walked the tracks for a bit, or she did walk Pleasant Valley Rd and crossed the tracks away from fireworks.
Hazels #39 post has google map, fireworks were at Park Dr/Access Rd north/west of where Taylor was found.
Why was the attacker there? Did they have a car parked close by and randomly thought i'll get the next one that walks thru this trail. If they/it followed it would of been for a bit which ever route she took. But the "creeped" seemed sudden, her phone was by the tracks, did someone push her- she smucked her head-so they drag her away or was it a beating,? they saw a zombie and were on bad drugs? it is an LSD kinda nite and new stuff, i don't no the effects of some of the stuff that they pop now. Kids with good grades experiment as well, expecially Halloween nite.
But why there, why that place- seems you would need to be localish to even be there. There is a lot of small communities around but "I'm guessing" only some put on a display for the evening - so what communities would Armstrong attract. Schools interconnect these communities, rents are cheap so i've lived way out, now i'm a bit more central but my sons friends from way, way out still come and stay here, and if he wants to spend time way out there he's got family take him in. The weird thing is very few of us parents know each other, never met never will, but the kids, its not like they can catch a bus home, so i know them well and they always have a place to stay. Lots of hitchhiking.

The letter i dunno are they getting trolls on Taylors or memorial facebooks seems thats common.
But where it happened, if its not an usual crossing spot, did Taylor interrupt a party. google earth is great- video would be better- it looks like the only well treed area along the tracks. With mobile phones theres got to be many pics , videos of the evening if a weapon/halloween prop was used. All the kids i know are around this age, and at this age some of the cracks are starting to show, they maybe my sons friends, but theres a couple of girlfriends or boyfriends where ive felt the need to say - oh no- nobody should treat you bad like that. Taylor may of been mature but she was still nieve not jaded.

Oh my!
has anyone seen the comments section following this article from newslink? A poster going by the name Zodi.. N...., claims to know who did the crime..a troll perhaps, according to the comment, the murder is related to letters found at a bus stop in 1992??? claims to not know how to forward info as the paper deletes his comments.

I found out about this too, and the same username is out there in Twitter and it's a woman who has been sleuthing, like us, but on her own it seems. She's trying to connect crimes against women in BC and out West and also to a suspect or suspects. She also is trying to solve the Zodiac killer crimes, hence the username. She claims that her tips to police have been ignored repeatedly.

Wow, while I remain skeptical, interesting stuff....

Ya i've been cruzing whatever comes up on google discussion sites, there was one with a little girl in a phone booth, BC, letters sent but decades later, i must remember to save links. Only the police know whether this letter is real (as in unknown info) you gotta play with the ego of these dudes hoax or not. Times have changed its harder to play those games for the player. Which one are you talking about, cause i heard one to dispatch--dudes pathetic -so needy- so careful that he was trying to say things so that the cops new he was for real. Worst part was dudes just needy, wants attention, the deaths were of no meaning, total random. i think i was on canada-unsolved maybe.
But i've gotta say- behavior specialist- yea like- behavior specialist have a place -but its Halloween nite --joe blow and jane doe can figure there is only so many options. send them to the HWY of tears. Where are halfway houses, drug treatment centres.
I'd lay a bet the person is localish but the cops don't know the area or the people. JMO

Hey yall, i am from the immediate area and thought i would share some of my thoughts. All this is only my opinion, information is being held tight at this point by RCMP and i only wish to share a local perspective.

1 It is most likely she did not have intimate/personal knowledge of the attacker, if she had, she likely would have named them in the last text she sent out. eg "_____ is creepin me out".

2 The above mentioned text was in all likelihood sent by her (any misspellings is probably do to ether short hand text/slang or panicked fingers/trying to feel less alone), makes no sense for the perpetrator to send this text in an effort to evade then leave the phone laying so close to where obvious foot traffic would surly pass.

3 This path by the tracks is well used, it is likely the attacker has used it regularly in the past as most locals have.

4 It is unlikely the attacker had a car with them (she would have been dragged into the car and not the bushes/woods if the attacker had one) or even owned one at all (this is my feeling due to what seems to be an intimate knowledge of the area), further pointing to his being local.

I can see how some people might be interested in exploring any links to the highway of tears (as mentioned in a previous post) but this is not very plausible/probable. I think whoever is on this track may have mistaken some of the information released to the public regarding the HoT investigation. At this investigations onset the police took a look at all crimes with similar victims/circumstances/patterns (245 characteristics). One local murder in a town 15mins down the road from Armstrong was represented on a separate list (the victim was a 17yr old girl named Jamie Van Weiren and it occurred in 1994) which was created through the initial HoT probe. The list she appeared on was of murders/disappearances mostly in the southern area of BC and not related to the HoT (which is very northerly). This list also included Mindy Tran and Micheal Dunahee, 2 small children. For whatever reason the investigators see similarities between these crimes and 8 others (one has since been solved, Jennifer Cusworth) sweeping from BC's coast all the way to Edmonton but they do not see them as being related to the HoT, M.O.'s must be different even though these crimes and the HoT are all most likely stranger on stranger crimes. The probability of Taylor's murder being related to these is slim due to the different M.O.'s. (of course M.O.'s can change with time and necessity hmmmmm)

The letter to the police is disturbing although not at all unheard of in these parts. A few hours down the road in a town named Abbotsford a man named Terry driver attacked 2 young girls with a baseball bat (one lived, the attack was sexually motivated). After the attack he wrote letters and called the police inc wrapping one letter to rock and throwing it through a random house window in the community. He also stole and desecrated the victim's tombstone then left it on a radio news vehicle. He claims also to have committed 3 murders that occurred in 1989. His was/is clearly narcissistic and craves notoriety/attention. Armstrong is a very small community, 4500 people. I don't want to think that 2 (Taylor's murderer and the letter writer) so severely mentally ill individuals can live in such close proximity to each other. Time will tell though as in TD's case his attention seeking and narcissism drove him to continually up the anti. If this letter is from her attacker he will most likely follow suit and continue to seek attention.

My Mom thinks it was a sort of group thrill kill by peers. Her opinion stems from the fact Taylor was beaten severely and not well hidden. She say's it reminds her of the Reena Virk murder in 1997 on BC's coast. As you can see my thoughts are different then hers but i continue to ponder this very possible scenario as well. If it has some truth then not all involved will be able to stay quiet and it will come to light sooner then later.

With little facts being made available my mind wonders over the little details that are known and of course non can make sense of this very senseless crime.

Thank you for taking the time to read my mini novel and for discussing the factual information that has been released and being respectful of Taylor and the community in this pursuit.

CanadianCandy, Welcome to WS and thankyou for that amazing first post and all the info. provided !

Thank you CanadianCandy. After reading it made me think about the term "being creeped". A creeper is usually an older man who is "creepy" in a general sense but usually gives the impression that he is a pervert. My students use this term, I've heard them use 'creeper' but not 'being creeped'.

From Urban dictionary:

creeped 26 up, 21 down

adj. - to be sexually pursued by a creeper (usually an older perverted man); seduced by a creeper.
Watch out for that creeper, you might get creeped.

I'm gonna have to think about this. I was thinking it was a gang of younger people into death and gore. "Being creeped" is making me think it's a single person and an older guy (not necessarily an old man).

I wish the spelling mistakes in her last text were made public. I'm not sure it's another person who sent the text, that really doesn't make sense. I wonder if the person was calling out to her with creepy noises like calling for a cat ie. psss, psss, pssss or whistling, etc. Ugh, poor Taylor, she was alive the boys found her phone on the tracks but they didn't see her. Was there blood around? Were her clothes still on her when she was found? Was she sexually assaulted?
