The fishing vessel that went missing off the coast of Delaps Cove in southwest Nova Scotia in December has been found. Five of the six crew members who were aboard the boat are still missing.

A remote-operated underwater vehicle was then used to confirm it was the Chief William Saulis. The RCMP said because of the depth of the vessel, it cannot be reached by recovery teams. They are determining the next steps for searching the inside of the vessel.

While five crew members are still missing,
the body of one, Michael Drake, was recovered the same evening the ship went down.

The RCMP said the families of the five fishermen — Aaron Cogswell, Leonard Gabriel, Dan Forbes, Eugene Francis and the captain, Charles Roberts — have been notified that the vessel was found.

More than a month after the crew of a scallop dragger from Nova Scotia disappeared on the Bay of Fundy, the RCMP are calling off their search for the five men suspected of going down with the vessel, citing "significant" risk to the lives of divers.

The body of one crew member was found the day the boat was last seen.

The loved ones of missing crew members received a glimmer of hope last weekend when the sunken boat was located on the ocean floor, about two kilometres from Delaps Cove and more than 60 metres below the surface.

The RCMP said at the time that their crews were not equipped to dive to the necessary depths to look inside, but they said they were studying their options.

On Saturday, they announced in a news release that those options had been exhausted.

A painful wait for mother of Nova Scotia scallop fisher lost at sea
Posted December 20, 2020 3:38 pm

For Lori Phillips, waiting for news of a son lost at sea is painful, as she says closure could begin with his body’s return from the Bay of Fundy. “I want my son home. I want to have something that I could go to,” she said in a telephone interview. “I need his body, I need closure and to talk to him.”

The other men still missing are Leonard Gabriel, Daniel Forbes, Eugene Francis and the boat’s captain, Charles Roberts.

Delaps Cove fisherman calls for raising of Chief William Saulis scallop dragger | The Telegram

Bay of Fundy Inshore Fishermen's Association president Colin Sproul is calling for the Chief William Saulis scallop dragger to be raised. “There’s a huge desire here amongst the communities on the bay shore to see the vessel raised, and for a number of reasons,” said Sproul.

Sproul listed closure for the families as the top reason that he, personally, would like to see the Chief William Saulis hauled out of the Bay of Fundy. “Fishermen take risks when they go to sea every day, but their lives are valuable – just as valuable as any other Canadian’s,” he said.

He said that recovering the vessel would allow for a full investigation into what happened, and it might aid in the search for the crew members that have yet to be found. He said there could be something others making a living at sea would learn from an investigation involving the recovered vessel, and there are also environmental factors to consider. “That vessel is residing on an important lobster molting ground and it’s most likely full of fuel.”

“There’s been a tremendous effort by the RCMP, and by DFO and by the Canadian Coast Guard, amongst others, to find the boat,” he said. “The first responders that have been on the scene for the last month, and at sea, deserve a huge amount of credit for finding that boat in the first place given the Bay of Fundy’s dynamic.”
