"How does a 15-year-old girl end up dead in the river? That question haunts me. I think about Tina Fontaine every day. Sadly, she is not the only one.

I have been a journalist for seven years. My whole career has been dedicated to covering missing and murdered indigenous women. I was 22 when Jennifer Catcheway disappeared. She was 18. Claudette Osborne, Cherise Houle and Hillary Angel Wilson followed — more names that haunt me."

>>snip>>

"The head of the homicide unit, detective sergeant John O'Donovan, spoke to the media. This never happens. He was shaken, emotional, and above all, sincere.

“She’s definitely been exploited and taken advantage of and murdered and put into the river in this condition,” said O’Donovan.

He used the words 'child', 'girl', and even called her a 'petite thing.' He humanized a victim like I have never seen before.

“She’s a child. This is a child that’s been murdered. I think society, we would be horrified if we found a litter of kittens or pups in this condition. This is a child. Society should be horrified,” said O’Donovan".

A new article about Tina Fontaine and the wider issue of violence against Canada's aboriginal women:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-dc75304f-e77c-4125-aacf-83e7714a5840

thanks for posting this jslk, is an eye opener and a very sad indictment of society
here in oz we would like to consider ourselves "multicultural" but the truth is that there are huge educational, social and economical gaps between our indigenous population and the rest of australia
be in peace tina, you were but a brief note in the pages of history but you were important to many

"In the meantime, think of Tina Fontaine of the Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba. When she went missing last year, a heartfelt flyer with her picture described her, with an addendum: “Scars on both arms.”

People cut themselves when they’re hurting. Tina was hurting badly. The flyer also warned passersby, “Tina went missing before. Do NOT approach her harshly please.” She was approached harshly, one final time."

"Woman arrested for alleged human-trafficking involvement is first cousin of Tina Fontaine"

"According to the Crown, the teen victim was brought to Fontaine's residence on May 20 by the three male co-accused. Fontaine did not know the girl. Over the next few days, the four accused purchased "provocative clothing" for the teen and took photos of her that were posted on a Winnipeg website that caters to those looking to purchase sex. They also repeatedly threatened to harm the girl and her family members if she didn't comply, court was told.

Men began responding to the ad in droves. Many would come by the Furby Street home and pay for sexual acts with the teen. The girl was also driven to several city homes as a "paid escort," court was told. All of the money allegedly went to the four accused, and the teen was not a willing participant at any time, according to the Crown.

There may have been up to 50 men who bought sexual services from the girl between May 20 and June 1, court was told. The abuse finally ended when the girl convinced her captors to give her enough freedom that she managed to flee the property and call for help.

"Tina Fontaine: 1 year since her death, has anything changed?
4 indigenous women have been killed in Winnipeg since Fontaine, 15, was found dead in Red River
"

By Jillian Taylor, CBC News Posted: Aug 16, 2015 3:59 PM"

"Spillett said social issues like poverty, lack of housing and lack of resources play a role in the epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women.

Fontaine was in the care of the province's Child and Family Services (CFS) when she went missing and was found murdered. She had been placed in a downtown Winnipeg hotel — an overflow child-housing practice that has since been phased out by the province.

After her death, another indigenous teen girl, staying in a downtown hotel under the the care of CFS, was severely beaten and sexually assaulted.

That attack is what moved the province to stop housing CFS wards in hotels. A spokesperson for CFS said there have been no kids in hotels since May 11.

Spillett calls this a good start: "But still, those are small changes and those are very small"

"Children fleeing Child and Family Services facilities accounted for 83% of more than 2,100 Winnipeg missing person reports this past spring.

And all 19 of the locations people most frequently disappeared from in November 2014 were CFS facilities, according to a pair of Winnipeg Police Service reports set for discussion at Friday's Winnipeg police board meeting.

Manitoba's Children's Advocate says the trend puts vulnerable kids at risk.

"These are kids who've often already experienced trauma," said Ainsley Krone, a spokeswoman for the advocate. "This could include being more vulnerable to being exploited on the street."

Krone noted caregivers must immediately report a missing youth in care, which may inflate the figures.

WPS said 68% of the missing person reports filed between April and June of this year were linked to kids who habitually went missing. As a result, 709 people triggered 2,179 missing person reports.

Of those who went missing, 71% were girls."

"Any time a kid is missing they are at risk."

"Sexual predators focus on these facilities,"
he said."
