From the My Espanola Now link above - interesting point:

However, since he was born around the time of the 60s Scoop it is possible that he did not grow up in the area.

I would strongly recommend against assuming that the Roots sweater has any connection whatsoever with this Doe's income level. They're commonly given to charity and lots of homeless and poor people wear them. Roots shops could (and still can, afaik) be found in every city in the country.

Yes, they are very common in Northern Ontario where I live. A new Roots hoodie costs about $100. CAD. They are definitely not a status item, but rather a practical and warm Canadian sweater. There are no Roots retailers on Manitoulin Island, but the nearest city has a Roots store in the mall. The local clothing depot, which sells lightly used clothes would have had, and still has, Roots items for $3.00.

All the First Nations on Manitoulin are aware of the search for his name and have posted his image on their local SM groups several times. The families are huge. Historic trauma has led to many broken family relationships. It might not be easy to find where he fits in, but I hope it won't be long before he gets his name back.

The residential school closed in 1965, so it's unlikely that he went there. But it's possible he didn't grow up in the area. Many children were adopted into non-indigenous families and removed from the First Nation.

That's what annemc2 meant by the Scoop: legally abducting children and adopting them out to white families.

Yes, that is correct. It makes it very difficult to trace his family.
