RCMP find human remains in burned-out cabin on Crown land - BC News

RCMP made a grisly discovery near Winter Harbour on Vancouver Island, Tuesday.

Mounties and the BC Coroner's Service are now investigating after they discovered what they believe to be human remains inside a burned-out cabin.

CTV News Vancouver Island is reporting that Port Hardy RCMP made the discovery Tuesday, but didn't release the information publicly until Friday.

Police were contacted by the caretaker of the remote cabin and they discovered what they believe to be a body at the scene.

“Preliminary findings so far have not indicated anything suspicious about this person’s death, but we will wait for an autopsy before making any final conclusions,” said Port Hardy RCMP commander Staff-Sgt. Andy Phillips in a statement Friday.

Mounties are asking anyone with any information to come forward. The body was found near Hecht Beach which is located approximately 30 kilometres from Winter Harbour.

MOO: This was a locally well-known trapper's cabin, and people could request to use it. Seems like they didn't immediately know it contained remains since it wasn't reported as first. The remains were probably extremely degraded.

Beloved secret cabin lost to fire on the North Island’s west coast - Vancouver Island Free Daily
A secret treasure on one of Vancouver Island’s most remote corners has been lost to fire.

A small cabin maintained by a local couple, and staunchly protected by those who know and love it, was found burned to the ground earlier this week.

The small cabin was off Hecht Beach on the Island’s northwest coast, about halfway between Quatsino Sound and San Josef Bay. It used to be a trapper’s cabin, and is on crown land. The local couple took responsibility for it, maintaining a sort of schedule of people who would request to stay overnight. There was a small stove, mugs and basic cooking gear, a bed platform and a small table.

Investigation at remote burned-out Vancouver Island cabin reveals human remains - Saanich News
Because of the remote location of this cabin, it’s believed that the owner of an SUV vehicle found parked nearby is the deceased,” said Port Hardy Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Andy Phillips.

Shouldnt be too hard to find the ID since they have the car (unless its stolen or otherwise off the grid).

You're quite welcome! This whole thing is sad. My heart goes out to the victim, the victim's family, the family that owns the property and the community.
