It’s a return to a gruesome piece of British Columbia lore.

Yet another human foot has been discovered washed up on a B.C. shore, this time near Port Renfrew.

Regional Coroner Matt Brown says the foot washed up on Botanical Beach Sunday afternoon, and was found by a hiker.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating after a shoe with a sock and human foot inside was found on a Vancouver Island beach over the weekend.

Charlotte Stephens made the grim discovery at Botanical Beach, not far from Port Renfrew, on Sunday afternoon, reported CHEK News.

“[My husband] was up on the driftwood and he happened to find the shoe. He picked it and brought it out on to the beach and we had a look at it for about five minutes and we thought it almost looks like there is an actual foot bone in it,” she told the outlet.

The shoe appeared to have washed ashore, Sooke RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

The coroners service will spearhead the investigation, working with the RCMP's Missing Person Unit to identify who the foot belongs to through DNA testing,

Matt Brown, regional coroner, told CHEK that the left New Balance shoe was manufactured some time after March 2013.

It appears that the shoe washed ashore, police said Tuesday.

RCMP and the coroner are investigating. It’s too early to say whether the situation is suspicious, police said.

B.C. Coroners Service spokeswoman Barb McClintock said an investigation is underway to determine whose foot it is and the cause of death.

It’s at least the 12th foot found washed up on the B.C. coast since 2007. McClintock said of the previous instances, coroners have been able to identify 10 feet, belonging to seven people.

One foot was linked to a man who had gone missing 25 years earlier when his boat overturned near Port Moody.

Investigators say it's difficult to determine how long the shoe was in the water, but they can get a sense of when the person would have gone missing based on its style and manufacturer.

That particular shoe appears to have gone on the market sometime after March 2013, said regional coroner Matt Brown.

"So I think it's fair to say we are looking for someone gone missing from March 2013 and December 2015," he said.

Brown added it's difficult to pinpoint when the shoe entered the water because of ocean currents.

"That's why we're working with our police counterparts and through our own information to determine who may be missing in the area to perhaps use that as a starting point."

Matt Brown, the regional coroner, said Wednesday that the blue and black New Balance shoe was sold in North America starting in March 2013. Brown said that indicates the person died between that date and December 2015. “A preliminary exam shows the foot would have naturally separated from the body after a prolonged period in the water,” the coroner’s office said in a statement.

The size 12 men’s shoe was discovered amongst driftwood near Port Renfrew by a Duncan couple on Sunday. DNA testing will be carried out on the remains. The B.C. Coroners Service hires a laboratory to do the analysis.

First to be tested will be DNA on hand from relatives of missing people, Brown said. If a match is not found, U.S. officials will be notified, he said.

Another shoe, possibly containing human remains, has washed up near the area.

“We really don’t have a lot of information at this point. All I can say is there was another shoe that was found on the beach near Port Renfrew which had something in it that could possibly be human remains. We haven’t yet confirmed it is human remains, though. That probably won’t be done until Monday.”

13 feet have been found on the B.C. coast since 2007.

Sooke RCMP say this shoe is the same size and make as the other one one found so it’s likely from the same person but further testing is needed to confirm that.
