Circumstances of Disappearance:
Wanner was last seen at her residence on 4624 - 45 Street in Red Deer, Alberta on January 3rd, 1989. Despite extensive searches conducted, she has never been located. Wanner's husband was charged with her murder in 1991 but was acquitted. He passed away in 2010.

A Red Deer man acquitted of murdering his estranged wife following a sensational jury trial almost 20 years ago has died.

May. 4, 2010

Jacob Ralph Wanner, 78, died suddenly on April 23.

Wanner was acquitted of murdering Wilhelmina Wanner, 52, at the trial in June 1991 in Red Deer.

At the time it was only the third case in Alberta history that someone had been charged with murder although a body wasn’t found. The Wanner case was the first resulting in an acquittal.

Wilhelmina went missing Jan. 3, 1989. Her body has never been found.

During the trial the jury heard the bathtub in Wilhelmina’s apartment was stained red with blood and a kitchen knife lay on the floor.

The Crown theorized at the time that Jacob Wanner killed his estranged wife because of anger, frustration and a possible loss of property through the separation.

However, the case failed to satisfy the jury who acquitted Wanner after 4.5 hours of deliberation.

In 1996 Wanner was granted full title to an 80-acre property which had been jointly held by both he and Wilhelmina.

Winnie was 52 years old when she was last seen at her home in Red Deer, Alberta on January 3rd, 1989. Blood, hair, and a kitchen knife were found in her bathroom. Police eventually charged Winnie's estranged husband, Jacob Wanner, with his wife's murder but he was found not guilty in 1991 due to their being no body and a lack of evidence. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 78. Wilhelmina remains missing and is presumed deceased.

DOB: Unknown, circa 1936

Description: Winnie was 5'1 and 97 pounds at the time of her disappearance. She has short, brown hair and brown eyes. Her teeth are false and she has a scar from a hysterectomy. She may have been wearing a 16" gold chain with an Aquarius symbol, small clustered pearl earrings with 10k gold trim, brushed denim jean jacket, runners, and a purse.

Tribal Information: Sources disagree on Winnie's background with some reporting her as White, others as "unknown", and others saying she is Indigenous.

<<Later, blood and hair were found in her bathroom, along with a kitchen knife. Red Deer RCMP searched the region for her remains, even tearing apart the Red Deer landfill. They searched flare pits, oil dump sites, parks and isolated roads near The Wanner’s acreage, about 8km west of Red Deer. With no body, police even turned to psychics, which was used by RCMP as a last resort. Even though her estranged husband was seen leaving the apartment with a suspiciously large bag, Winnie vanished from the face of the earth.>>
