ETA this article states the attack was random and the victim and accused did not know one another. Also says the family has requested victim not be named or her age publicized. :(

I would if I was closer.
Speaking of shelter in place, some of us are finding it rather curious that the govt issued the alert as a "terrorism alert".......... I snapshot the weather channels post re the terror alert banner.
We are all curious, if this is something new in relation to all the stabbing attacks taking place in Europe? (even Toronto of late). Are the officials now categorizing them as actual "terrorism"? Or is it another form of fear mongering ? If they do believe it is in same category as Europe shouldn't we know the truth?
On the flip side, if every stabbing in the city and GTA of Toronto was classified and alerted as such, those alerts would have us buzzing and ringing round the clock! Or is it a case of someone sitting on the Pickering Nuclear Plant button and actually triggering an alert like a few years back????

My dad did bug spraying for her neighbour, apparently they talked just last week. She was concerned about the bug spray harming her garden. He assured her it’s safe. Lovely woman, this is so surreal. We’ll be attending the candlelight tonight. Rest in peace
I'm so sorry for your Dad. It's SO disturbing. I wonder why he focus on such an innocuous, innocent woman? First degree murder means that it was planned... :(

Durham Regional Police update media and neighbours leave flowers follwoing the fatal stabbing of an elderly woman outside her home in Pickering.

Under the YCJA, a young person can be sentenced to 10 years for a first-degree murder conviction, however only a maximum of six years can be handed down for custody, with the remaining four years being community supervision.

The Crown will have the option of pursuing an adult sentence, however, if convicted in that scenario he could face a life sentence, with parole possible after 5 - 7 years.

I believe his appearance was from a police station, not in person.
Regardless, I wonder what must have occured in this child's life, between the school aged pic and when he became a calculated murderer? I WISH that we could hear more about his past and his family dynamics!

All kinds of things come to mind with these types of incidents... child grooming by others or even parents, acting out movies, psychosis of varying degrees/types, gang initiation, drug use. In earlier years we would have empathy for a child who does this, but with all the new and horrid behaviours I think we are less empathetic and more suspicious of further involvement. I'm thinking of gangs that use youth to commit crimes to avoid the adult court system.

''Durham police say Doney was gardening outside her residence on Lynn Heights Drive on May 29 at around 3 p.m. when she was approached by an unknown male and stabbed “multiple” times.
She was rushed to a trauma centre for treatment but later died of her injuries, they said.''
''In a statement, released on Tuesday afternoon, Doney’s family thanked the community for its “outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.”
“We especially want to thank the first responders for all of their efforts. We take comfort in the fact that she was a woman of strong Christian faith,” they wrote.''

''A man who identified himself as a relative of a slain Pickering woman was busy Monday morning rearranging bouquets of condolence flowers to ensure they didn’t wilt in the sunshine.

The man carefully moved some of the seven gardening buckets, full of flowers, under a large tree off the sidewalk into the shade.''
'The accused murderer is scheduled to appear in court on June 20.'
