Car drives into pedestrians at Liverpool FC victory parade. Man detained

We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.

We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

We would ask people not to share distressing content online but to send the footage or information directly to us @MerPolCC or pass on information by calling 101 quoting log 784.

Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The vehicle came to our right. It emerged from just right next to an ambulance, which was parked up. This grey people carrier just pulled up from the right and just rammed into all the people at the side of us.

'It was travelling south, down Water Street, straight towards this strand, which is where the docks are.

'It was extremely fast. Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.

Mr Rashid described how crowds began trying to smash the car windows: 'Then he stalled for a few seconds, probably about 10 seconds. Then the crowd that was a bit further back started rushing at him trying to smash his windows.

'But then he put his foot down again and just ploughed through the rest of them, he just kept going.

'It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.

Firstly, I hope all affected get all the help they need to make a full recovery both physically and mentally.

I watched the footage and I really think this is a driver going into fight or flight mode which has caused the incident.

The driver was driving slowly down the road until his vehicle was attacked by supporters - he then seems to have panicked.

I might be completely wrong but I don’t think this is as clear cut as other similar incidents we’ve seen.

This certainly looks like what has happened. Looking at the Daily Mail article, it would appear that the driver has deliberately followed an ambulance down a closed road, and then when the crowd has remonstrated with him, the driver has either panicked, or the red mist has come down, and he's sped off.

What exactly was the reason to go there by car
if it was obvious there was no place for traffic there? 🤔

The place was jammed with football fans celebrating.

Or the reason of
accelerating which meant knocking people over?

People were hurt, run over, screaming in agony & terror.

Was the driver under influence of alcohol
(it was reported he left some pub)
or substances?

I feel sooooo sorry for Liverpool fans :(

One of his charges relates to driving whilst unfit through drugs.

It sounds like the road cordon had been lifted at the time to let an ambulance through.

It does seem to be a horrific incident rather than a carefully pre planned attack imo.

I wouldn't call it an "incident".

Drunk/Doped drivers are potential killers behind a steering wheel.

Everybody knows:
Have you drunk alcohol?
Have you used drugs?

Then ...

Don't drive!!!!

Aaaaargh

Throw away the key!

Of course it is premeditated.
Taking drugs & sitting behind a steering wheel is exactly premeditation.
