The pictures are mind-boggling. It's believed to mostly be done by homeless people who live in the area, but I suspect that dock workers may be in on it too, by leaving containers open or at least easy to access. It also explains why a lot of people haven't received packages from Amazon, FedEx, etc.

Remember that the container back-up is at least in part a result of California law & port regulations.

I wonder how much of this is also the result of thefts less that $950 no longer being considered a felony.

IIRC, the reason behind this was because TPTB didn't want kids who stole iPhones to have their lives permanently ruined. I'm OK with that for juveniles, but not for adults.

And I posted this here because this is a website about crimes, isn't it?

Yes it is. (Ithink) Also, DA Gascone isn't interested in prosecuting anybody if it means they will spend time in jail. Why not steal from anywhere and everywhere. nevermind the folks who work hard to buy these items, or the small business owner who is put out of business because of uncharged theft, etc.

What is the cost to repair the containers, clean up the tracks?

and never mind the insurance companies, that have to pass the cost on through higher premiums to all consumers....

You would think they would have taken addl security steps after the first occurrence. This didn’t just happen overnight, it took some time to create that disastrous looking mess. Hopefully they’ve beefed up their security…..OMG a what a flippin mess. I feel bad for so many people who’ve been waiting for their packages.

“But Union Pacific, which has its own police department with jurisdiction over the 32,000 miles of tracks it owns, said that even as it has expanded its security resources and partnered more closely with local law enforcement, the problem isn't going away. After being arrested individuals are released from custody within 24 hours, it said.”
