Yesterday during the hearing, when JP brought up the JAC meeting, didn't Baez say that he wanted to request an in camera hearing and JP declined? Baez is extremely uncomfortable disclosing how that money was spent and I don't think it has anything to do with hiring experts or anything of that nature. I think he is scared to death to show the JAC where that money went. It should be interesting if we get to see this hearing.

In my limited experience with lawyers--I have found that they can practically say anything about their fees and have it be okey dokey. I left a message on an answering machine for an attorney once and he charged me 500 dollars to listen to the message. I am not making that up! It was not a Cindy Anthony 1/2 an hour message either, it was like 1 minute max. I complained to the bar and they did nothing. They said that was his hourly rate and he could charge one hour for anything he did. Seriously.

Another time a lawyer burned through my retainer in less than a day. I asked to see what he did to prove that he worked on my case. The answer was that he "researched" and he did not have to show me a thing. It seemed to me that lawyers can simply "think" about the case and charge for it! So, it won't be a problem for Mr.-thinks-he-is-so-brilliant-Baez to state that he has been pouring over forensics/death penalty statues blah blah for thousands of hours. 270,000 is peanuts to lawyers. Baez only got into this for the huge dollars. No one would have taken this case without huge dollar signs in their eyes. BUT! it WILL be interesting when they tell him that he has to be paid like a public defender now. I'm liking that.

It will be a closed hearing. The defense is worried that if the SA gets to hear what they spent their money on, it will tell the SA their strategy. That includes who their experts are.. who they will eventually have to tell the SA anyway, so that the SA can depose them.. However, it would also show who they asked expert advise from.. but didn't like the said advise..and will not be using. <wink>

Do we see defense getting paid for the TES search when JB was paid for that months and months ago? It's almost as if JB thinks that he is a high profile attorney now so he can demand the big bucks for which he helped himself from KC's account. And since he is so high profile he really should not have to do any "grunt" work. If JB had not brokered a deal for KC her trial would have been over by now, or she would have accepted the offer from SA's office which was around the time KC had gotten the money from ABC. This deal smells worst than KC's trunk........jmo

JB is not being paid for his time now, the JAC will be covering just expenses and fees for experts but not for lawyers. So from what I understand he will not be paid for the time to do the TES file search.

Do we have the lawyer count right? JB, CM, LKB, AL (no 's'), JG . That's five and it was 6 before TM left.

Are you sure about that QB? Not that I doubt your saying so, but I thought it meant he would be paid the same rate as a public defender, no more than that. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

I know Mason just may be working for a crate of oranges like Dr. Lee, and I think Lyon(s) was just getting paid expenses but that seems up in the air also now, and LBK was working pro bono, but I suppose that also means her expenses were paid.

The JAC expenses meeting will be interested because I understand from their post hearing comments they wrote after the indigency hearing they were not yet satisfied with the explanations Baez gave for his expenditures, and Baez still has to justify those. I assume they were okayed by Strickland but after reading JAC's comments, it doesn't seem so. I'm really interested to know who's in and who's out based on who gets the money and who doesn't. JAC sound like a taxman's audit - eek!

She has 3 competent out of 4 attorneys and has had almost 300 grand to spend on her defense and they've been moving at a snail's pace, hoping by the time trial gets here people will have forgotten about Caylee Marie, as well as the smirks and the partying and the photographs.

I'm LOVING this new judge, so glad he's getting down to business.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make every single trial, but the one I'm interested in the most is hearing the motions on the death penalty. Can't wait to see KC's reaction as she realizes she's in court hearing her case and having to hear the words "death penalty" over and over again. Oh they better have the xanax ready before she leaves the jail, she's going to need it.

Amazing you would say that Steph, because that's the one I really want to see also.

I must admit my heart sank like a stone when Judge Perry started his if this defendant is found guilty......death penalty phase - I was just shocked because everyone seems to be tippytoeing around this issue in court. I almost felt - oh geez is he allowed to say that - as if it was something forbidden - and I think she is guilty and should get LWOP OR THE DP. It was really strange to hear it out loud.

I even feel weird mentioning it here. I mean it is something we toss around all the time, but Judge Strickland's court really baby kid gloved Casey, and everything was all nice nice for Casey. She could stroke herself, talk to Baez, sit with Lyons arm around her, write notes on her little pad - all that and more. Oh and let's never forget "make him stop".

So to hear Judge Perry rip those gloves off and bring the Attorneys and Casey AND me out to the reality of this case was a real wake-up.

PS. I liked it.

just for a back up I'm including a link here from the Q&A lawyer thread. But I recall when she filed for indigency they were asking for costs & expert fees only.

Also, from what I recall, the JAC does not want to pay for out of state attorney costs for travel and expenses, now that I am not absolutely sure about and I don't have a link.

Yes, I see that. I took my information from the JAC guidelines we were looking at earlier, so my mistake, thanks.

I see in Todays News just up says Judge Perry has declined the Defenses request the budget meetings be held in private.

Was there a motion for that or was that simply a request they had made during the last hearing?
Glad to hear it. Of course it should be public, its public funds after all.

As to your earlier comment about kid gloves and the mention of dp in the courtroom, I am jumping up and down that finally someone is not tip toeing around the princess.

She needs a great big WAKE UP CALL , like yesterday.

Baez just "asked for it to be private" during the time set for the hearing. I recall JBP just slightly raising his eyebrows and giving him that brief look.

I think you are right because Baez is the only one that didn't say he was working pro bono at that hearing with JS.

From this article in March.

Judge Grants Casey Anthony's Indigent Status

http://www.wftv.com/news/22891038/detail.html

"Regardless of exactly how the money was spent, taxpayers will now pay for Casey's experts, investigators, and other costs, which her new lawyer J. Cheney Mason said Thursday could amount to about $200,000. The cost of her lawyers, all of whom appear to currently be working for free, is not covered under this order."
-from the article

I just wanted to make sure that the state is not paying for lawyer fees, just costs.

I think you and I understand that order differently QB. I understand it to say JAC will pay for certain things, but the order does not guarantee any of the lawyers will be paid. My impression is that Baez will have to go in front of the JAC to have his costs paid (as if he was a public defender) - and that it wasn't automatically granted.

Now I see why I am confused. Well, we'll know very soon.

So you think he could still be able to claim his fees at some later date?
