(CBS News) Andy Rooney, the "60 Minutes" commentator known to generations for his wry, humorous and contentious television essays - a unique genre he is credited with inventing - died today. He was 92 and had homes in New York City, Rensseleaerville, N.Y. and Rowayton, Conn. Rooney had announced on Oct. 2, 2011 in his 1097th essay for "60 Minutes" that he would no longer appear regularly.

A sad day for his family. I hope they find the joy in his life outweighs the sorrow of losing him.

I have always refered to Andy Rooney as Mr. Obvious-his Archie Bunkeresqe way of drawing my attention to the irony in the obvious really helped me personally see the chit from the shineola. R.I.P. Mr. Obvious, you crusty but much admired irishman!

Highly recommend his book My War about covering WWII with Cronkite and Ernie Pyle. A side of him I'd never seen.
