According to investigators, Robinson's mother saw the first photos released of the alleged suspect after the shooting and thought it looked like her son. After Robinson told his mother he was at home sick the previous day, his mother shared concerns with her husband that Tyler appeared to be the suspect, to which her husband agreed.
(…)
Following the shooting, Robinson's father suspected his son had used a rifle that had been given to Tyler as a gift. When his father reached out to Tyler by phone, Robinson implied that he was set to take his own life, but was convinced to meet with his family at their home.

Robinson "implied" that he was Kirk's shooter to his family, and said he did it because there is "too much evil and [Kirk] spreads too much hate." He added that he "couldn't go to jail and just wanted to end it."

Messages, a hidden note and a grandfather's gun - what we have learned just now

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray

Tyler Robinson, 22, has been charged with seven offences over the murder of Charlie Kirk.

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray outlined a long list of allegations and evidence that will be used in the case, and says he will seek the death penalty.

Here’s what we know:

The charges: aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and committing a violent crime when children are present.

Text messages: Gray read out texts between Robinson and his roommate, a transgender male with whom Robinson was in a romantic relationship. The messages Robinson sent allegedly say he shot Kirk because he "had enough of his hatred". The messages also detail his attempts to recover the rifle he hid, and instruct the roommate to delete the exchange.

A hidden note: Robinson allegedly left a note under his keyboard for his roommate, saying "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I'm going to take it".

The sniper nest: A university officer searched the rooftops after hearing a gunshot and found marks in the gravel suggesting a sniper had been camped, with a direct line of sight to where Kirk was shot.

The video: Robinson's mother saw a video of a suspect and told her husband it looked like their son. The father then confronted Robinson. Gray said video also showed the suspect walking with a stiff leg at the university, suggesting a rifle was hidden in his trousers.

The gun: Gray says the weapon used was unique and had been given to Robinson. It once belonged to his grandfather. Robinson's father asked to see a photo of the gun when he became suspicious, but Robinson did not send

Man arrested after Kirk shooting charged with obstruction of justice

There was a lot of confusion straight after Charlie Kirk's killing last week.

Authorities arrested two suspects early on, then released them before launching a manhunt that ended with the capture of Tyler Robinson.

We now have more information from officials about one of the suspects initially arrested - George Zinn.

Zinn was at the event where Kirk was shot and killed. As people fled, he was allegedly seen shouting that he had shot Kirk, according to Utah authorities.

He was arrested but later said he had falsely taken responsibility to sabotage police efforts to catch the gunman.

Officials say the distraction may have helped Robinson evade detection for longer, so Zinn has been charged with obstruction of justice.

Officials say they do not believe Zinn worked with Robinson.

He is also facing further charges for possession of child sex abuse material, after officials found over 20 images of children on his phone.

He remains in police custody.

People in Robinson's life appeared caught off guard
Gray is giving a lot of detail about the frantic hours between the shooting and Robinson handing himself in.

The texts and statements Gray reads show how people in Robinson's life seemed caught off guard by his alleged actions.

Bullet passed close to nearby children - Gray

Gray continues to recount the events of last Wednesday.

Kirk was answering a question about mass shootings carried out by transgender individuals when the gunshot rang out, he says.

The bullet struck Kirk in the neck and he immediately slumped to the ground.

The bullet passed closely by other people, including nearby children and the person who asked Kirk the question.

Kirk was rushed to hospital and declared dead.

A medical examiner’s report is still pending.

Robinson’s mother told the county sheriff’s office that her son had accused Charlie Kirk of spreading hate, Gray says.

While talking to his parents at their home, Robinson allegedly implied that he shot Kirk, “and stated that he couldn’t go to jail, and just wanted to end it”, Gray says.

When Robinson was then asked why he did it, Robinson said that Kirk “spreads too much hate”, Gray said.

There’s too much evil in the guy,” Robinson allegedly told his parents, Gray says.

The elderly rabble-rouser who allegedly hindered Utah authorities’ response after Charlie Kirk was fatally shot is now accused of keeping “graphic” sexual photos of children on his phone, according to law enforcement.

George Zinn, 71, was charged with four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor Monday after investigators found more than 20 images of kids as young as 5 years old, at least partially naked and “posing” in a “sexual” way, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Tuesday.

Robinson due in court for first appearance soon

The suspect in Charlie Kirk's murder is due in court in just over an hour.

Tyler Robinson will be read the list of seven charges we've just learned about from county prosecutors, and will enter a plea.

He'll appear virtually, and the hearing at this stage is likely to be very brief.

We already know that, because prosecutors are planning to seek the death penalty, he'll be held without bail until his trial begins.

Prosecutors unveil more charges than initially expected

Kayla Epstein
Reporting from Provo, Utah

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray has announced more charges than expected, bringing the total to seven counts.

Surrounded by about 20 people from the prosecutor's office and the local sheriff's office, Gray made the sombre announcement that his office intends to seek the death penalty in this case.

Prosecutors were expected to charge Robinson with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. Those charges have now been confirmed.

But today, Gray also said Robinson will face two counts of witness tampering, linked to alleged instructions to his roommate to delete text messages and not talk to police if questioned.

The prosecutor also announced an extra charge - commission of violence in the presence of a child.

I attended the press conference today in Provo, UT where formal charges were filed against Charlie Kirk's accused assassin, Tyler Robinson. Here are my main takeaways:

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray will pursue the death penalty. 6 felonies and 1 misdemeanor have been filed. The most aggravating is capital murder which carries a minimum of 25 years. But again, the state will be pursuing death.

DNA matching Robinson was found on a number of items tied to the murder. Gray says it was on the trigger of the rifle found, on the towel left behind, and on the unused and used shell casing left behind with the rifle.

Parents were a big help in this investigation. Mom first contacted Robinson after seeing an image of the suspect on the news. She called her son, who claimed he was home and sick at the time of the shooting. Mom told the police that over the last year, her son had become more political and had been leaning more toward the left; also more pro-gray and trans-rights oriented. Mom told police he began dating his roommate, a male transitioning to female, which resulted in conflicts between him and his father who had different political views.

Parents told police that Robinson had mentioned that he knew Charlie Kirk would be at Utah Valley University and that he accused Kirk of spreading hate. Later, when his parents asked why he did it, he explained that "there was too much evil and Kirk spreads too much hate."His father had gifted the rifle used in the attack to Robinson. It was a family gun first belonging to Robinson's grandfather.

The most damning evidence against Tyler Robinson is text messages he exchanged in the 33-hours between the murder and turning himself in, where he confessed to his roommate and lover. Robinson had pre-written a note to his roommate that he left behind: "I have the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it." Police have a photograph of this note.

Full text message exchange between Tyler Robinson and his roommate and lover, a transgender male transitioning to become a woman.

Robinson will appear virtually today in court at 3pmMT where he will be informed of the charges filed against him. A preliminary hearing will come next where a judge will hear all the evidence against Robinson. Finally an arraignment, where Robinson will make his plea.

Robinson gives a slight nod, and the judge continues.

On the screen, Robinson shows no expression as Judge Graf begins reading the seven counts against him.

Protective order filed for Charlie Kirk's widow

The prosecution says it has filed a pre-trial protective order on behalf of Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow.

Judge Graf has granted the request.

The prosecution also says it has filed notice of intent to seek the death penalty.
