After Kirk’s killing, security measures heightened for 9/11 anniversary events in New York

BY MICHAEL R. SISAK

New York City police say the killing in Utah is prompting added security for events in the city marking the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Vice President JD Vance is set to attend tomorrow’s memorial ceremony at the World Trade Center site while President Donald Trump is scheduled to be at the night game pitting the Yankees against the Tigers.

Security around the 9/11 commemorations in New York is always comprehensive, with street closures, a large police presence and the Sept. 11 memorial plaza in Lower Manhattan closed to the public.

Officials didn’t detail exactly how security would be increased.

This is going to be that 25 ish person. As the director of the FBI, you do not tweet that you have a person of interest in custody unless you're positive he's your guy. This is an absolute mess messaging wise.
Why not? They said in the press conference he was a POI not a suspect. Your guy there John seemed to think it was newsworthy. If he was displaying suspicious behavior and eyed by LE why wouldnt they take him in as a POI and state that fact? Better to be open than obfuscate that fact causing more speculation.

It's not so difficult to use drones for security surveillance, particularly with several roofs in the vicinity.

This is a genuine curiosity for myself because I’m not in a professional field of security. Why haven’t drones been used more frequently? It seems to be a good method for seeing rooftop activity. Is there an obvious reason that I don’t see for this?

Man arrested for obstruction of justice known as local nuisance

George Zinn, 71, who was taken into custody on obstruction of justice charges, has been known in the community for showing up to various events - and occassionally disruptin them, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
He has been arrested multiple times in the past for misdemeanor offenses.
Zinn's most serious charge came in 2013 when he was arrested for threatening to place a bomb at the end of the Salt Lake City Marathon.
He took a plea deal and received a sentence of probation, along with mental health treatment.

I don’t feel quite as bad for this older man as I did earlier.

In a major high profile case, I have never, not once, seen a law enforcement agency say they have a POI in custody, and it not been the guy.

Look at the confusion this has caused. A great number of people now believe the guy was captured, when he was not. I literally just talked to my mom on the phone and she said "at least they caught the guy."

Same, but perhaps that level of security is reserved for heads of state and that ilk?

I do wish in hindsight that if they know a speaker is controversial to some, and the event is taking place outdoors with an enormous crowd expected, maybe just one drone could be made available for a cursory sweep, at least?

Per CNN TV now:
“Campus is all clear. There is no ongoing threat on campus.”

The "25ish" POI's name was literally mentioned in scanner traffic. That's likely where your guy John got his info.

People knew he was being sought by LE so I think it's better his being taken in was communicated rather than covered up with people endlessly speculating about him.

Well pants at ankle guy was not 25, or I am too.
On an otherwise horrific day, your post here coming up with the "Pants at Ankle Guy" moniker provided at least a moment of comic relief and the ability to laugh. So thank you for that.

OK call me crazy but I can't see anyone running anywhere. Can someone point it out to me please?
Thank you.
Tricia
Pause the video and then slide picture for picture and you should see someone running across that roof.

Between the trees at the top, on the roof.

I should just say I know nothing about guns, so I have no idea if you can easily dismantle a sniper rifle.
I don't know about "easily", that would depend upon the person dismantling the sniper rifle setup, but you can practice it to get it down as fast as you can; and people absolutely have.

On the one hand, of course this is wonderful and welcome news. Students can feel relieved.

OTOH, the reason the campus is all clear is because the perpetrator was able to shoot CK dead from the roof of a building and haul tail away, free and clear and unapprehended.

Which is more than a little alarming.

So the threat is ongoing everywhere, I would say.

Agree. The shooter is still on the loose. The public is not safe. With the confusing messages being reported, I’m not even convinced the campus is truly clear. The shooter could be a student.

My heart is broken. The Yankees did a moment of silence for Charlie before the game. 💔

In contrast to you, I didn't like Charlie Kirk's political stance.
BUT we absolutely BOTH agree that it is sad to see him killed. Violence is never the answer. It's absolutely unacceptable!! My thoughts are with his family and friends. I'm also thinking about all of the people who witnessed this. I hope they can move past this, but it will no doubt be tough.

I hope they find the true perpetrator of this horrific crime.

Hugs to all!
Well spoken, and much appreciated.
