I'm confused. The FBI Director announced that a subject was in custody.

But at the press conference just moments later, the Utah Department of Public Safety, UVU PD, and FBI said that a suspect is not in custody.

But at that same press conference, the governor said a POI was in custody.

MOO, but while I expect conflicting witness reports, I personally can't recall a case where LE has stated two directly contradictory things at the same time. IMO it probably would have been better to wait to hold the press conference until after they had more information.
These conflicting reports just stoke conspiracy theories. Not good.

As I understand it, there were 2 people detained/questioned and cleared/released. There is currently no suspect in custody.
Prove me wrong

John Miller on CNN talking about security:

This isn't the type of event (long distance shooting) "that's considered when you're a medium threat player in that realm." It's not like he's an elected official or world leader.

These are just police sources, and not a statement provided by law enforcement. It’s encouraging they have someone they’re looking for.
If LE is really currently searching for someone specific right now, then why aren't they enlisting the public's help in that effort by issuing a bolo with his picture to the public with the, "suspect is armed and dangerous, if you see him, do not approach, call 911," drill?

What a nightmare. Just imagine it - being some rando showing up to be audience member, and then the next thing you know you're being told by some self-assured and/or frantic idiot that you're a likely suspect in an assassination.
I think he was the guy going to the hospitals asking if Charlie Kirk was there. It was on the scanner link someone posted earlier in this thread. They said his name on the scanner. I wonder if that is why they released his name because people were already talking about him since he was mentioned as a possible POI on the scanner.

Media Advisory
Update: Charlie Kirk Shooting at UVU

Orem, Utah — At approximately 12:20 pm MST, Political Influencer Charlie Kirk was speaking at a student-sponsored event with Turning Point USA. Charlie was shot during the event at Utah Valley University (UVU), after which he was taken to Timpanogos Regional Hospital and hours later pronounced dead.

This shooting is still an active investigation. The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are co-leading this incident in unison with the Utah County Attorney’s office, the Utah County Sheriff’s office, and the local police departments.
We initially took in George Zinn as a suspect. He was later released and charged with obstruction by UVU police. A second suspect, Zachariah Qureshi, was taken into custody and released after interrogation with law enforcement. There are no current ties to the shooting with either of these individuals. There is an ongoing investigation and manhunt for the shooter.
The FBI has created a digital media tip line for information regarding this shooting at fbi.gov/UtahValleyShooting. We ask the public to please provide any information they may have to this tip line.
DPS’s State Crime Lab, along with all law enforcement involved, are working multiple active crime scenes. These were identified based on where the victim was shot, as well as the locations where the suspect and victim traveled.
The shooting is believed to be a targeted attack. The shooter is believed to have fired from the roof of a building down to the location of the public event in the student courtyard. Any additional clarifications cannot be provided to protect the integrity of our investigation.
To secure the event, UVU PD had six officers working the event. These security measures were in addition to Charlie Kirk’s security detail, who travels with him. Approximately 3,000 people attended. The location of the event was held in the university quad, an outdoor bowl courtyard on campus for events.
This is a tragic moment for Utah and our country. As we all heal, we encourage those who need help to call 988, our state’s mental health crisis line.
The UVU campus will be closed for the rest of the week. If students, faculty, or staff need additional information about the campus, please visit uvu.info.
For media partners who want to get on our distribution list for this incident, please fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe6cNaXS6H4Z1eIT6N5r1wYXWlmL8H5VMmCDygZW3N6M_qXQA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=114556101743302954429
For the livestream of the press conference, please go to Instagram @UtahDPS. We will have higher-quality video available later tonight. We will send it as soon as it’s available.
Any inquiries regarding visits from federal political leaders should be directed to their offices.

He's an outlier as far as assassins go. It's rare these guys have a well thought out escape plan, if they even try and escape at all. It's rare that these guys operate like assassins in the movies, but at first glance, this guy appears to have done just that.

I'm still convinced that cameras will have captured him though, and this won't go on too long.
He could very well be tucked away in the building or completely off campus. Hopefully, he’s left clues as other two recent killers have, leading to their capture. Reality, shot CK a little after noon, still time to gain information & capture him.

A hunter with a good scope could make that shot. It doesn’t take an extraordinary talent. imo

Crooks, the Butler shooter, got kicked off the rifle team because he was a “bad shot”.
I'm getting a hunter vibe, not a tactical vibe. One shot from a bolt action into center mass from high ground is no great feat, and there's no brass to round up. I'm extremely curious to see what the caliber was.

LE will have ballistics information that might narrow things down but the one shot and now the tidy escape make this seem more professional than lucky amateur. Wonder if there were any recent threats to the victim.

Thank you layer for your expertise,
Please continue and comment on how the shooter could aim quite accurately through the plastic tarps hanging down?

I have given this some thought - thinking perhaps the shooter was going for center mass.

Doesn’t a trained sniper go for a head shot? IDK

Yes, absolutely evil. Which comes first, the evil or the mental illness that drives these murderers?
I think they can exist independently. JMO.

I think most people would have shot more than once- taken more time, left more evidence... all IMO.

This is the college I graduated from. The campus is built on a hill and all buildings are connected with corridors. You can quite literally walk from level 1 all the way to level 11 of the tallest building on campus.
On the one hand, of course this is wonderful and welcome news. Students can feel relieved.

OTOH, the reason the campus is all clear is because the perpetrator was able to shoot CK dead from the roof of a building and haul tail away, free and clear and unapprehended.

Which is more than a little alarming.

So the threat is ongoing everywhere, I would say.
I graduated from UVU and can speak to the maze of halls that interconnect these buildings together. The campus is on a hill, so you can quite literally be on top of one of these buildings and go down a floor or two and walk through a hallway and be in a completely different building. I would not be surprised if the shooter move from the Losee to exit out the back of the Computer Science building, the highest point on campus. They would then have handful road to pick from to drive away.

During my time at UVU we had a visit from the governor inside the computer science building which is a completely open atrium between floors. He was on the lower floor and I watched from above. No one checked is students for anything suspicious. Security on that campus is pretty well non-existent and the stepped design of campus being on a hill likely gave the shooter a perfect vantage point and exit route.

I personally hope they find this person quickly. It's unnerving living minutes away from campus and having this person hiding somewhere in my community.

So sad and senseless

The shot seems incredibly intentional, and skilled. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
IMO
