CNN now: Law enforcement expert talking about the limited routes out of the area, and the extensive use of plate readers. Also thinks he cased that roof multiple prior (before tent and after), which may turn up further video of him.

John Miller: If the offender left with the gun and if he picked up the shell casing (don't know if he did take the casing), then you're dealing with someone who has the basic characteristics of a sniper : meticulous, careful, patient. This would make him an organized offender, and complicate things.

He could very well be tucked away in the building or completely off campus. Hopefully, he’s left clues as other two recent killers have, leading to their capture. Reality, shot CK a little after noon, still time to gain information & capture him.
IMO if this is a professional hit, we'll never know who did it. If this was not a professional hit, LE will find him, it will just take time and diligence. A professional seldom leaves a clue while an amateur almost always does.

Like I said, I wasn't familiar with CK until today. Now I see that much (er, all) of his platform is basically opposite to my beliefs, yet he's just one of the people in that category, as we say here, I just scroll on. But, why would someone develop intense rage over him? I wonder if the killer was trying to send a message to bigger fish.
Yes, his views rile me up but that’s no way to stop him talking. Protest, write a petition talk to your local representative, talk to your friends and frenemies. Everyone needs to be able to express views. We all need to talk more to each other, not shut down views. Violence is never the answer. It brutalizes us all and makes us fearful. And it’s cowardly to shoot someone who is talking and is unarmed and not acting to directly assault you.
With people it’s assassination
With animals it’s called hunting.
This is not OK and never should be considered so.

I think this is going to be just like Luigi Mangione's crime. Meticulously planned and executed, but no reasonable chance of getting away with it thanks to technology (the cameras mostly).

Seems the shooter was very organized. One step ahead of LE at this point. College police departments are generally not well trained or well funded so this locale could be a fairly easy target imo.

This. If the casing isn't found, that'll be a tell. IMO

Someone will recognize him from the cams. Look what happens to people who are briefly filmed swiping base balls and souvenir caps from kids.

I just hope they get this person soon and alive if possible before they can do more damage. They’ve taken a human life, a father and a husband and probably so much more. Tragedy. No justification.

I honestly do not believe that student folks who don’t agree with a particular speaker on campus and prepare and sign a petition to say why, are the shooter type - quite the opposite.
The peaceful folks sign petitions. I worry about the ones who aren’t signing petitions. The truly evil who instead plot destruction.

At the press conference there was mention of poor quality security cameras/footage. This could be an issue.

Behind a paywall, but it's an interview with a former army sniper. He says that he thinks this guy was a bit of an amateur, as he was likely aiming for Charlie's head and hit his neck instead (nerves may have gotten the better of him).

Thinks it's someone with range experience, and they should look into people who have been at gun ranges.

Doesn't think it's an AR type rifle, but a bolt action (based on the sound).

it was mentioned upthread there was also a slight wind. How do professional snipers deal with wind....training, experience?

Opposite how so?
He was all for free speak and the respectful exchange of ideas and debate.
He loved his country, God and his family.
He’d talk to everyone. He loves people.
I was shocked to hear Charlie was shot and killed. My thoughts are with his sweet wife and kids. Such a tragic loss.

Whoever the shooter is, seems to have taken a page from the same book as Matthew Crooks.

Same here. Had never heard of him. I, too, wonder about the rage aspect, and I also hate that his family has to go through this, not only the shock, but I worry that some people will elevate him to martyrdom, and his son and daughter will reside under that shadow, reminded daily for the rest of their lives of how violently their father died.
No kids or family should have to face that. It's just too bizarre to think that CK pizzed off someone so badly to cause an assassination. Not a brief flare up of rage, but extended planning. Ck is said to have had a big role in the last election, now that's a huge deal, maybe this person was just biding his time, waiting for Kirk to come to his corner of the world well known to him, the sharp shooter.

Why? Assassination or attempted with gun?
Or are you talking about motive? Which we don’t really know for sure in either case.
Certainly premature for this shooting.

I will disagree. Many politicians won't cower in a corner. The event security will increase a hundredfold. Someone upthread mentioned security drones--they'll be everywhere. And cameras along all routes to the event, see-through purses and backpacks only, and airport-type security to enter. MOO of course.

and if the drones/additional security measures aren't enough, i hope many will have the funds to hire their own fully-trained sharpshooters placed atop buildings as deterrents. killers like the assassin who killed charlie kirk are bloodthirsty... violence is their god/guiding light.

He’s a martyr already.
I don’t think you realize just how vast his influence IS.
I have a Feeling everyone’s gonna find out.
Imo
That sounds like a threat. People assuming a motive are getting ahead of themselves when we have no idea yet. Some may have egg on their face if it's not what they think.

I wonder whether this “threat to others” from Payton is actually true? We will know more in coming days I guess.
Apparently, threats aren’t uncommon.

“Just last week, House Speaker Mike Johnson said U.S. Capitol police looked into 9,000 threats made against members of Congress. So far this year, there's already been 14,000 threats that Capitol police have had to look into.”
