"Check Your Manhood" Talk Gets Coach Fired

As with anything - we don't know the whole story. This might have been the last straw in a long line of inappropriate remarks or unprofessional behavior. Or a school board member's kid might have been on the team and been very embarrassed.

Also - the difference here is that the coach went beyond talk. The comment may have been accepted, but making the kids actually touch themselves??? I don't know the particular circumstances, of course, but parents are awfully concerned (with good reason) about pedophilia and many are also concerned about homosexuality. Certainly this could be looked on in that context, depending on how the coach conducted himself. That's the world we live in...

Good point. But if we at WS waited to know the whole story, we'd never discuss anything! :)

Parents are right to be concerned, but in fairness, the coach told the kids to grab themselves; he didn't grab them.

You're right - Nova - not knowing is part of the fun!

This situation just conjured some of the questionable, creepy coaches/gym teachers I have had through the years. (AND - I have had some AMAZING ones too...)

The situation could have been the typical rousing halftime speech where a coach gets wound up and he took it too far. Or he could have been pushing the envelope, creeping kids out for years, until he finally went too far.

Slightly OT - but on similar lines - my Latin teacher in 10th grade would always stand super close to us (particularly boys) and insist on having them describe all the depraved things Romans did. Or he particularly liked to pepper his lectures w/ that kind of stuff. I was no prude, and neither were my parents, but we went to the principal and he was GONE. Whether he was trying to interest the teenagers and relate to us, or was a dirty old man, I don't know. But he was unprofessional and we have to err on protecting kids.

Believe me, Ang, I HATE that jock stuff and hated it even more when I was in school.

Sounds like your Latin teacher needed to go. While this thread has been growing, I've been thinking of all the things teachers said when I was a kid (60s and 70s) that would certainly get them fired today!

Protect them from what? Everyone better toss out their TV's, radio, comic books, and every other thing that enhances our lives if we want to "protect" them from this phantom menace. The things we are bombarded with in our daily lives are thousands of times worse than hearing what happened in Ancient Rome. Perhaps we wouldn't have so many perverts in American society if we weren't so uptight about everything.

Janet Jackson flashed her breast on television. What's the big deal? What young mind was truly damaged by seeing that? It was a nipple. Everyone has two of them. They're different colors and sizes. What is it about them that's hurting kids so much so that we need to "protect" them from it?

Two totally different situations - teachers/coaches are in a position of authority, and because we entrust them with that authority, it is their duty to conduct themselves professionally. School should be a protected environment in the sense that we should expect a higher level of discretion on the part of teachers. (And in fact, we do - a number of Supreme Court and lower court decisions restrict the right of free speech to teachers and students in the academic environment.) This coach used his authority to get students to touch their privates. My Latin teacher used his position to get young kids to talk about bestiality, orgies, etc. and made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable.

Janet Jackson and the rest of the media is a whole 'nother issue. I haven't authorized the TV, books, etc. to act in loco parentis. In those situations, free speech in a public forum should override the interests in protecting children. (I'm pretty damn liberal, and a stauch Constitutional Rights defender - trust me... I just don't like power plays.)

I understood, J. I was agreeing with you. Our language is full of sexist terms used to indicate courage, persistence, strength, etc. I'd like to change that, but firing one coach ain't gonna do it.
I was agreeing with you agreeing with me.:p

Nova, you reminded me with your post about recalling what your teachers did...

When I was a child in school I remember the pregnant teacher smoking at her desk.

And how did you like my mother? (JK, but she did smoke through all 3 pregnancies. Somehow we survived.) I remember when I was first an undergraduate that the students' seats had built in ashtrays.

I also remember an hs coach telling us we were all good arguments for "retroactive abortion." Cracked me up then, but I can only imagine what would happen now.

I consulted hubby - a college football player, now coaches football and wrestling.

He agreed - the difference is that the coach didn't just say "Check your manhood" it was that he made everyone touch themselves. Too far...

He also wondered if this guy is a teacher as well...

my husband said the same thing. he played college football and coaches highschool football. Said coach in question shouldn't have made them touch themselves.Shouldn't have made the boys feel like they were "ordered" to touch their genetalia. Said it was harmless, but inappropriate. Felt like he should have been suspened and had to take classes though, never fired.
Said if the other players find out who snitched that this poor kid will live in hell until he is out of highschool. he says he hopes no one reveals which kid told on the coach. Hadn't thought about it, but that's true.

LOLOL!!
I smoked while pregnant too (My Docter actually let me smoke in the hospital!)
I know its awful... but back then it was not such an issue.

My Doctor said that quitting would cause undo stress and I was already in premature labor.

I remember one coach who was a little "touchy" (he always hugged all the girls and grabbed our hiney's) My uncle went and threatend his life..
He never touched us again...

Yes - my husband said maybe fired, only b/c we don't know if it was the one incident or a culmination of things.

That's interesting about the snitch. The news article said one kid didn't do it - all others did. Although - it all depends on popularity of the coach - some coaches won't be missed...

Yep - I always say that people better HOPE I hear about things like that first. I'll threaten to ruin your family, sue like crazy and crumble your reputation. My husband and my brother would be less likely to speak... more likely to take action, and less likely to give any warning.
