I want to add something here. I don't care how negligent the parents were, or their backgrounds...I am very happy this little fellow did not die from the fall, or become paralyzed, or that no harm came to him ... I see so much negativity, and we MUST remember we are talking about a three year old, essentially still a baby. I hope he grows up and does something to better our world.... I know this does not lessen the blow of losing this marvelous, endangered Gorilla....but even if he did not listen, this is not his fault, he is a little child. IMHO

Just wanted to bring this forward. It's statistical. Although things to happen, zoo's very rarely have safety issues. Should this enclosure be changed? IMO without a doubt!

Jinx! I was too slow in finding it.

I can hear the sighs of disappointment now. That must have taken them all of five minutes.

Meanwhile the U.S. Department of Agriculture is still conducting an investigation into the safety and operation of the zoo. Anybody want to make a bet that the zoo will be cited?

I'm glad the mom wasn't charged and I didn't expect her to be.

I don't expect the zoo will be cited either. The USDA is in charge of inspections. They inspected the Gorilla Walk just last month and there were no violations. What do you think has changed since then? That's not to say maybe they should rethink their standards for animal enclosures. jmo

Well I certainly don't expect the zoo to be cited, so that is all well and good.

I'm still enraged.

I'm just enraged.

I had a difficult to supervise child, and I ALWAYS supervised him. My other kids didn't need constant supervision.

I don't know what I want to see happen except for this child to be labeled difficult to supervise. And frankly I want the parents sanctioned in some way for not recognizing that.

I'm sick of this being labeled as just a mishap, it could happen to any mother, etc.

SERIOUS damage was done by this child, and this mother's inattention. That's what needs to acknowledged.

Well, maybe now you would give it a second thought. I would never ignore my child had she ever stated such a thing...

This reminds me, we were in Yellowstone one day with my grand daughter who was 3 at the time. We had gotten out of the car to look at a grizzly and take pics. It was quite a ways a way when we started watching it at a pond. It bathed and then got out and actually started our way. We were within safe distance but my grand daughter wanted to go down the hill toward the grizzly and told us "Dont you worry about me" as she started to take off down the hill. As soon as she said that my Red flags went up..we were there in a heartbeat to grab her and tell her there was NO WAY she was going to go any further and how dangerous it was. We went to the car straight afterwards. I cannot imagine what would have happened had we not been watching her and grabbed her right away. She just had no clue what so ever that her life was in danger and did not see any need for our concern for her well being.

I knew this woman wasn't going to be charged. Lady who actually held her when he fell into African painted dogs (and was killed by the dogs) exhibit wasn't even charged.

Good article about Harambe. The reason he was hand raised is because his mother stopped taking care of him. Also explains why he might have grabbed the child by the leg (that's what gorillas do).

"The deal is they play rough. Once they get to over 100 pounds, if they smack your legs out from underneath you or grab you by the leg and drag you around they're just playing but you will get hurt," he says. "So you stop going in their enclosures because if they play rough and you get hurt, that would be your fault."

I don't believe the mother will be charged, but the decision isn't finalized yet.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/ohio-official-decision-charges-gorilla-case-39547919

"No decision has been made yet on whether charges will be brought against the parents of a 3-year-old boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, causing an animal response team to shoot and kill the primate, authorities said.
Cincinnati city spokesman Rocky Merz said Wednesday no determination has been made on possible charges nor has anything related to the case been released by city or county departments.
Merz said an investigation into the incident Saturday at the zoo is ongoing and that Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters will review the case."

This reminds me of little Maddox that died at the Pittsburgh zoo, African painted dogs exhibit.
Maddox's mother made a stupid decision to put her baby on a very high ledge to 'look'...........really???
This so sad in all ways. I am glad this baby survived with no injuries.
I am angry at these moms. This mom has an active child.................
When my son was 3 he was a handful, when I took him places I had a child harness. They used to make them so they were always by you.
Some people made comments on the harness, but he is 50 now and can't even remember it..........I had other babies and had 2 hands.............no help!
I see children running wild and parents with no control. A lesson to all.
It would be nice for mom to be fined so the zoo can get another gorilla.
My heart goes out for all people and children that saw or heard this happen.................

The investigation is finished.

Police have wrapped up their investigation without recommending charges against the mother of a 3-year-old boy who witnesses said fell into the gorilla exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo, according to a source close to the investigation.

Not according to today's article that I linked. The police did not recommend charges, but the prosecutor will be looking at the case. MOO

"Merz said an investigation into the incident Saturday at the zoo is ongoing and that Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters will review the case."

I usually take the word of local reporters, over someone a thousand miles away from the story in New York or Washington.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said in an interview that the Cincinnati Police Department asked his office to look at the investigation, and he agreed. He expects that review will happen Thursday, with a possible determination made by Friday.
“I will read everything and decide what we’re doing,” Deters said.

Thats all well and fine, but what would you do when you have four children and only two hands?

Well first, I don't do zoos as I am ethically and morally against them and I would NEVER go in a situation where it was me and four children to a place where there is the possibility of danger. Especially if they are not my own children. I would have waited until the ratios were 1:2 or better.

The prosecutor hasn't decided on filing charges, he'll decide tomorrow.
[h=1]Gorilla World to Reopen at Cincinnati Zoo With 'Modified' Barrier"

The Cincinnati Police Department has finished their investigation into this matter and turned their investigation over to the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters will review this information," the prosecutor's office said in a statement. "The earliest that Mr. Deters will conclude his review would be Friday, June 3rd."[/h]https://gma.yahoo.com/gorilla-world-reopen-cincinnati-zoo-modified-barrier-165305532--abc-news-topstories.html#

BBM. I do zoos, I like animals, but I agree with you, why put yourself in a situation you can't physically manage? Especially if you know you have a 3-year-old boy who doesn't listen???:banghead:

:snooty:I'll bet they didn't take that stance until after the PR firm advised it!!!

Otherwise, I'm sure they'd be sueing the zoo, or there'd be a Go F Me account.

All those parents who lose their child for a moment at the mall and get a call over the intercom should be too, if that's the case. The courts will be full.

Ric Simmons, an Ohio State University criminal law professor, said he doubts a charge of child endangering could be proved in this instance, since the offence typically involves leaving a youngster unattended for an extended time, not a case of a child momentarily wandering off.

"The mother was standing next to a zoo exhibit and lost track of her child for perhaps a minute or so," Mr Simmons said. "That has happened to almost every parent in the world in a public place."
