The news mention the police hearing cries for help before finding the victims. IF the voices came from the victims, at least one was alive for quite some time after the attack started. So far we haven't heard of any witnesses being on the scene before police. I wonder how many people were on that trail at the time and if they heard anything.
My hunch is the cries for help were from witnesses, not the victims. We might not hear from those witnesses since they were able to give their account directly to LE right there. I have a feeling they encountered the bodies but didn't see the perp, and perhaps they were asked by LE not to say anything publicly for the time being.

speculation only.

Sounds more and more like he was walking this trail looking for victim(s) but without anyone particular in mind. Reminds me of how other people had noticed Richard Allen on the trails in the Delphi case.
My heart sank reading this. You could be spot on.

I hope this doesn't take years to solve.

I am inclined to believe what some of the others have said about a possible altercation being the "trigger". But I have questions:

1) are those kids their bio kids?

2) was car with taped plate seen coming into the park or only seen approaching the park exit (I.e. leaving)?

3) I am curious why they recently moved (although may not be relevant)

Yes. The taped over license plate is way weirder that the fingerless gloves in my opinion.
That points to it being planned to me. Doesn’t necessarily mean the guy was targeting anybody in particular, just that he went out there to cause harm to someone.
We would need to know if the tape was on when he came into the park, as well. If so, clearly targeted.

I'm wondering if the kids did something to annoy him. Kids with freedom on a trail might have run in front of him, breaking his stride, for example. This guy seems angry without needing much of a trigger to send him into an outburst.

I no longer think there was a confrontation in the parking lot, but something that happened on the trail, imo. I still have the vibe, however, that the dad stepped forward to protect his girls.

The kids are so young, they might not have any idea what triggered the attack.

The victims must have been quite close to their car, for her to be able to escape and come back.

IMO, the attacker probably had his car in the same lot - and committed the crime close to his car so he could quickly drive away - not go walking back through the park to his car, covered in blood, seen by more witnesses, etc.

So, I think the crime was fairly deliberate, in the sense he knew about his need to get away.

Also, he may have been hiding after the attack on the husband, waiting/watching for his chance to get to his car.

However, I think he didn't really know clearly what he was doing, since choosing 4 people was very foolish. A more deliberate killer would have lurked close to the park entrance until a solo person came by, and wouldn't have shown himself to others in the park.

I’m not seeing reports today that include the more detailed description.
That is a problem

IMO
From the video I watched, calls wanting to give more info were not being answered by LE. Seems the system was overwhelmed or something.

And the perp likely was parked at the visitors' center too.

Did a confrontation happen in the parking lot? In the center? Perhaps he was belligerent and the family decided to walk away, but he followed them? (IDK, just thinking aloud.)

This was my first thought. A "trigger" in his unstable mind set him off.

Considering how long they had been married, those are likely their bio kids. I think the car was seen leaving but there are other accounts of seeing a similar car later.
I saw a fairly common reason given for the family move, although not in MSM.

Not necessarily. As some have speculated, he might have been on a mission to hurt ANYONE in the park, not necessarily the victims he ultimate chose.

I think that is a very strong possibility.

Moo...maybe it was just a verbal confrontation when mom n kids took off. And got stabby when she went back? It is said she took children to car, but then says children were at visitors office?
Also I think I read somewhere that the car was seen at a bank robbery earlier...or maybe I dreamt that.....moo

Then my guess is there was an altercation and he went apes**t. I don't believe for a minute that he went to a public place in broad daylight and randomly approached a family of four with no provocation (in his sick mind). The altercation may have been the most small thing to a sane person who would shrug it off, but more to him.

I respectfully disagree that is a strong possibility. I don't think he would have choose to approach a family of four in broad daylight in a public space. Something triggered him.

Regarding the 911 call, I was assuming it was the kids who alerted the people in the visitors center, but do we know that? If mom put them into the car, perhaps they stayed in the car. Maybe a witness on the trail alerted the visitors' center staff to make the call.

I'm guessing no one had cell service on the trail, but the visitors' center had a landline? IDK.

BBM. It's unclear how the children got to the visitor's office (with or without a third person's help) or even if the family car played a role.

Cedars, this is my line of thinking, as well.

I hear ya!

But I also never expected a guy to kill four college students in Idaho without a known trigger. Or a lone walker to kill two teens on a bridge in the middle of an afternoon in Indiana. A guy this weekend stabbed random people in a Walmart in Michigan on a Saturday afternoon.

I have no idea what happened in that park in Arkansas, but I am keeping a few different ideas on the table at the moment, discarding them as we learn facts (which is slow-going at the moment). One theory, among others, is the guy went to the park ready to kill.

It's entirely possible the motive will not make any sense.

IMO fingerless gloves might not have been practical, more of a style 'look'. It used to be goth, and went with dressing in black.

You certainly make a good point. I still think a provocation of some sort was likely - could have been anything when we are talking about a mentally unhinged person . But yes, people have certainly been murdered in public for no reason.

Most weight lifting gloves come fingerless don't they so would be terrible for the purpose they've been used for assuming they are fingerless. also I was very tired last night when posting. But there was some speculation that he knew the family and I think i meant to say it was possibly a random attack on strangers. Again this was my fault not checking what I posted as I was tired.

Has there been any update on the car with the taped on plates that was seen ?.

and who goes to a fitness store to buy those for this purpose. Wouldn't it have been easier to buy generic gardening gloves. Does this mean the attacker is a avid weight lifter ? if so is this psychotic roid rage ?.
There are so many different uses for fingerless gloves, it would be difficult to pin something down at this point. Truck drivers, weight lifters, rock climbers, dexterity, it goes on and on. We need more facts, IMO.

The good thing about the gloves, imo, is perhaps they will identify him. Most people don't walk around in July on a hike wearing fingerless gloves, but this guy does. Is he a guy who wears them regularly, even when not needed? Is anyone calling in tips based on that? Maybe.
