Closing arguments- thread #173

This is the first trial I've watched closely...have a couple of questions.

1. So after the DT closing arguments, does JM get a last word?

2. How exactly does the reading of the verdict occur? I know the jury will deliberate and come to a decision. After that is reached, are the attorney's, JA, etc called in to court for the reading right away? Does the verdict reading get scheduled for the following day? I just want to make sure I know when it is being read. Not sure if it is sudden, or scheduled after a decision is made.

Well well well.

Today is THE END.

I watched the rest of the closing arguments on HLN, not the computer, coz they had NO commercials. So I was cheering Juan on by myself. I thought it was great and painted Arias as to who she is....the great manipulating liar!

I missed the beginning of the closing arguments and I am watching now!!!

Can't wait for Juan to finish up after......UGH...Nurmi.

See you at lunchtime in NY. IF they start on time!!!!!!!!

I think he's going to use all morning and put "3 whole wonder" in bold font on the screen during the whole presentation.

Yes. Nurmi will be all about the sex. It will be a pathetic, slow moving, boring closing by the defense.

I can't wait to see what Juan has up his sleeve for the BIG BANG, the last word, before the case is sent to the jury for their deliberations!!!!

Did anyone notice how Jodi held her hand to her face to pretend fake crying. when the gruesome autopsy photos were shown of Travis...yet she peaked out of her fake crying to look at the photos...out of the corner of her eye and then fake cry again...she took a moment to look at those photos...yet trying to pretend to the jury that she is so shocked by them....Busted

Her actions of peeking at the gruesome horror murder pictures was ABSOLUTELY the creepiest thing I have ever seen in my life. She is sick, sick, sick. I truly believe she can relive the murder when she is looking at those pics and she ENJOYS it. Crying my azz. I only hope the jury was looking at her.

1. Yes
2. First the 12 are picked by a lottery. When a verdict is reached there will be a notice published/text alerts sent/breaking news on TV, etc. Generally they give all sides/parties at least an hour notice. JA will be brought to the courthouse (holding cell there) each day during the deliberations so she'll already be there.

Once everyone is there ... the verdict is read.

Interestingly, AFAICR, the CDs were never submitted into evidence either. I have a feeling the CDs existed, but of course I don't know... But if they did, Jodi once again had the wherewithal to gather incriminating evidence (from another room no less) before leaving. www-no-fog-dotcom.

She obviously didn't know what her story was going to be at that stage and thought it best to get those as well. Turns out, that these would have helped her, in a way - especially if they were damaged in any way from being thrown against the wall.

Maybe Juan doesn't know if the CD's existed, either, but maybe he's doing the same thing with the CDs as he did the gun. (If the gun was Travis' then she 'burgled' it and can be charged with felony murder.)

If she wants to say she brought the CDs, then, so be it. Bringing them from Yreka only adds another 'premeditation nail' for her coffin. She certainly wasn't bringing them to show Ryan Burns.

Wonder if Einstein regrets some of her smart a$$ testimony yet? :floorlaugh:

I re-watched the LE interrogations over that long Easter weekend. JA said 3 times "...I would have worn gloves...", and then there was "I have a box of gloves". She was being very persistent about it, like repeating it would make that nasty palm print go away. Did she wear gloves but the one she was holding the knife in was torn off when she damaged her hand? Was that her left palm print? Too much sleuthing :scared:

I have always thought the same thing....she did wear gloves but it got a hole in it while stabbing him and she didn't put new ones on in time.

You guys need to listen to it again, she says right after "I would've worn gloves" something in the sense that it wouldn't matter if she had worn gloves, because her prints would've been there anyways because she was always at his house. She wasn't worried about leaving behind handprints, she figured she could explain them away by saying "I was always over there, of course you'd find prints!" She didn't expect Det.Flores to go: "Either someone put their palm in blood, or had blood on their hand.. when they touched that wall"

And I don't think she'd wear gloves when taking his pics, that would've looked suspicious.

Hello all!

What a wonderful closing we had yesterday. I was wondering why JM didn't talk about how impossible JA's story is considering the time between the last photo of an alive Travis and the one where he is bleeding profusely. He didn't talk about the Defense theory at all. Is he saving that for the end?

Could be, Rose. Saving the best for last? He can use whatever Nurmi brings up in his closing as a sort of rebuttal. :twocents:

1. JM does get the last word. :)

2. Once the verdict is reached there is an announcement. The court usually gives us atleast a 30 minute warning. It is usually read on the same day.
Once the jury starts deliberations you would want to stay glued to Websleuths or watch the news. You could ask for an sms alert but I hear that they are sent out a little too late sometimes. Don't take chances. ;)

Good Morning!

Wow again. I have a question?

WHY is there not a guard to take JA out as soon as court is dismissed? She sits there free as a bird. Why is that, does anyone know. She should be shackled as soon as the jurors leave and taken out?

Right. He'll directly challenge the Defense's final theory whatever that may be. JM is so incredible!

Good Morning The Farm!

JA should be shackled and dragged back to her cell as soon as the jury is out but she gets special treatment. She's allowed to smirk, glare and gossip for ages after. Let her enjoy her final days of courtroom freedom. I hear death row is calling her name! ;)

That's just Dwane Cates. Pay him no mind. He's the one that gave Nurmi the idea to say Jodi returned the can to a different Walmart even though Jodi herself said already she returned it to the same Walmart.

I don't understand the logic also that the chaotic nature of the murder scene also means it wasn't premeditated. Murder is messy business, no? It doesn't mean it wasn't planned.

Would also like to add that I read on that horrible JAII site that many of her supporters have friended Cates on face book...I find that despicable that he would do that.

Does anyone know if Travis's family is going to be in the courtroom for Nurmi's closing? I know they've seen and heard so much already but I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it's going to be for them to listen to all the defense's carp piled on all at once, one horrendous lie after another...

Have another question. Why didn't JM check with both walmarts in Salinas just to be on the safe side? You know the defense is going to say she returned it to the other one!

And Good Morning to you Rose!!!

But if you remember good old Casey they were on her as soon as the jurors walked out and she hated it! She was treated as the, well, killer that she is.
Yesterday I was floored that she was just sitting there while everyone was walking all over the place. I just don't get it.
Anyway Juan was excellent, just excellent. Did you see Jodi yawning?

I think personally that they will be. They want justice and the end of the race is coming.

Yep. Yawning. Smirking. Laughing. Taking gleeful peeks at the crime scene photos.

I tell you, it did me so much good to hear JM tell the whole world the ugly truth about JA. She was humiliated yesterday. Mocked and humiliated. I'm so glad! JM mentioned her snapping, smirking and 'apparent' crying. So good. I want more!
