Closing arguments- thread #173

Good morning, trial watchers. I have several things to do today and will be going out shortly. If court starts on time today, is it possible that the jury will get the case at the end of the day? Nurmi will surely drone on for at least 5 hours, and Juan will likely have some tidying up to do afterwards. Morning break, lunch recess, afternoon break. Could the jury get the case today, or will they have to wait until Monday to begin deliberations?

I am not a 100% sure but I think it is for this part of the trial they have billed. If anyone can find a different link, this is the only one that really breaks it down into lay terms/language.

K

I would guess the billing is for her preparation to this point.

Good morning! Not looking forward to Nurmi's voice today. Ugh.

Did anyone notice yesterday, when Juan was talking about how JA wanted to see the crime scene photos during interrogation because she wanted to fit her story to the scene, she was very subtly nodding her head yes? i wonder if Janine or other body language experts saw that? Very telling.

I want them to so badly! But, I will be shocked if they do.

Just a few things this morning. Posted at court site:
5/3/2013 023 - ME: Order Entered By Court - Party (001) 5/3/2013 5/3/2013 029 - ME: Status Conference - Party (001) 5/3/2013
and

IT IS ORDERED the Office of Public Defense shall pay the mitigation specialist, MariaDe La Rosa, compensation for 100 hours of services rendered during the guilt phase of the trial.

The MS needed a court order to get the prosecution to pay her? Is this usual?

ETA: Sorry,. I meant the defense, not the prosecution, my apologies.

A lot of "what if?" questions running through my head...

If I were in Jodi's shoes right now, I'd be frantic. JM was masterful yesterday and laid it all out beautifully. Her defense team must be in full damage control mode and they know they can't reconcile her story with all of the evidence. Could there be a last minute plea agreement? Jodi's been in jail for years and has, no doubt, heard detailed stories about the differences between general population life and being on death row. Even if she doesn't believe that she'll ever be executed, a life of isolation has to be a terrifying prospect.

I'm not thinking that it will really happen, but it's an interesting possibility. I don't know if JM would consider it, but trading the death penalty for LWOP would be a fair exchange for removing the possibility of a holdout juror.

They just said on HLN that there is (supposedly) TWO Walmarts in Salinas, Ca. Could this be the trick up the duhfense's sleeve ITO the gas tanks? Please tell me that if true, the second Walmart was built AFTER JA's pass through that area.... Surely JM would have covered this (had an investigation done of the returns history of both Walmarts) if it was a possibility?

And if this were a possibility, why would the DT not have used that in the trial. Plus, that isn't in evidence, so are they even allowed to bring that up? Just one more lie to add to JA's and her DT's field of lies, imo.

I use to ask myself the same questions, and must admit I have wondered on occasion how both Nurmi and Wilmott can look at themselves in the mirror everyday. Each time this thought enters my mind I think back to Daniel Horowitz, the lawyer whose wife was brutally slaughtered by a 17 year old punk for absolutely no reason. Daniel was amazing during that event and he demonstrated how important it is to sustain the adversarial system we have. I learned to agree with him because it is important. I no longer look at defense lawyers as slimey creatures, instead I understand and accept the need for them and am even thankful. As much as it pains me to say it, defense lawyers are just as essential in the fight for justice as are prosecutors. Even so, I realize there are in fact some bad defense lawyers, there are also some bad prosecutors. It happens.

I don't see how the jurors will be getting the case today. But who knows, MAYBE Nurmi couldn't come up with enough BS to take up the whole day.

I was thinking how it's ironic that this week's "short" weekend break will feel like the longest one of the trial because we're so eager for deliberations.

It's already been stated here at WS that the other Walmart didn't open until 2010.

Public Defenders office is not the prosecution, but I agree that order appears strange on its face. She hasn't been paid?

No. This is a request for the GUILT phase of the trial.
Isn't this the guilt phase? I thought it was and then we move on to the penalty phase.

The part of Juan's closing statement where he paints the picture of what happened during the killing is so powerful, and what does JA do? She sits there with that "poor me" expression on her face. Not once has there been any genuine remorse or any real tears. If you had really done such a heinous thing to someone you cared for surely you would be sobbing your heart out . She has cold, dead eyes and a cold, dead heart and the DP should be the ONLY outcome.

not only were her theatrics during that FAKE performance ridiculous, she kept sneaking peaks of the photos and was very weird about it. WTF does that if they are distraught? she was not crying. she was faking it. no tears, I think one Kleenex was used the entire performance.

and then once that part of the closing was done, she was back to cold hearted Jodi.

I have never seen such a Dlisted actress before...if this wasn't so serious of a trial, it would be comical.

while some may not believe in evil....I would think that watching this chic would change your mind....she is the pure definition of what evil is. if people don't believe in the death penalty, I would hope they would after watching her during this trial. why anyone would feel she DESERVES to breathe the very air us innocent people breathe would be beyond my comprehension. she deserves to be shot, hung, stoned and thrown into a pit of gators.

I cant wait to see her astute performance today when her team goes to bat for her.

If it were me and I was Juan and they wanted a deal....I would try this entire case all over again before I gave them that.

I am with you. It is confusing. This is the only link I could find that more or less split it up.

I can't fathom why the MS would pre bill for 100 hours for after the verdict. What if she didn't use 100 hours? Or is she piling up the hours now for research etc for the 'after' verdict time.

K
and I didn't go back through all the other Minute Entries to check (since I thought this number was low) to see if perhaps this was final portion (not total for 5 months) of guilt phase. If AZLawyer checks in, maybe she will be able to clarify.

Yep - peek at nasty pictures, hide face, and fake cry. Wouldn't be lost on me if I was on that jury!

Exactly. I watched her closely when the graphic neck pictures and back wounds were shown to the jury and she always had to sneak a peek at them and then she would turn away and act all sad. She really enjoys seeing pictures of what she has done. It is sickening and she needs to be punished for what she has done.

She should have admitted guilt and thrown herself at the mercy of the court a long time ago but she is just not that way. She will continue to deny all the way to her single cell.

When the judge gave the schedule last week she said the jury would get the case today. I also think she said they would deliberate Monday. I'm thinking since court ALWAYS starts late, and since she won't have to do the jury instructions like she did yesterday that Nurmi could get his 5 hours (if that is the agreement for each side) that they could possibly start deliberating about 3:00 AZ time today.:twocents:
