‘There were kids down there,’ survivor describes collapse at Gaylord Rockies that injured 6

A video showed the aftermath of an HVAC system collapse that injured six people at the Gaylord Rockies resort Saturday morning.

According to the Aurora Fire Department, the collapse happened around 9:50 a.m.

Of the six people who were injured, two had life-threatening injuries and four had non-life-threatening injuries.

Jamie Olson, who took the video, told FOX31 her son had just gotten out of the hot tub when the system collapsed directly on top of it and the rest of the pool.

“We were right on the outside of the hot tub, and just kind of heard a big groan, and we looked up,” she said, “and it was just like a domino effect. One side collapsed, and then it caused the other side to collapse.”

Gaylord Rockies will investigate itself for HVAC collapse at indoor pool

The investigation into what caused the overhead HVAC system to collapse into a crowded pool area at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center will not include any government investigators.

Aurora Fire Rescue said six people were hurt, two of them with life-threatening injuries, when firefighters and paramedics responded to the accident on Saturday morning. But neither Aurora Fire nor any other city agency has jurisdiction to investigate what went wrong on private property.

The [FOX31] Problem Solvers spoke on background with a mechanical engineer, who said the black liquid seen pouring out of broken ductwork was probably a buildup of mold and mildew mixed with water.

He suspected vents in the ductwork may have been poorly designed and positioned in such a way that moisture from the pool area couldn’t properly escape the ductwork, causing the heavy liquid to build up over years and eventually weigh down the ductwork to the point it snapped and collapsed.

Well that is pretty shocking. It isn't that old. It that is true, that is an incredibly poorly designed area. I suspect some remodeling projects are coming soon.
