CO CO - Beverly England, 32, Salida, 12 June 1980

  • #21
For years no one knew what happened to Beverly. Her disappearance understandably devastated her children, Bricia and Cayl. It wasn’t until last October that investigators in the area reportedly released a joint news release about remains that were found — way back in 1992. DNA from those remains had finally identified the body as Beverly England. The report says a scrap metal collector discovered the remains in 1992, but at the time, a pathologist wrongfully said the remains were from a pioneer-era woman (!), and the bones sat on a shelf for 23 years. This is a disappointing development.

No Grand Jury In Cold Case Homicide

http://denver.cbslocal.com/2016/11/16/no-grand-jury-in-cold-homicide-case/

Despite pleas from police detectives, the Chaffee County District Attorney has decided not to convene a grand jury in the cold case disappearance of Beverly England.

Chaffee County Sheriff John Speeze confirmed to CBS4 in February that a suspect they believe is responsible for England’s was identified. That person’s name was not released but Speeze said the suspect lives in the San Luis Valley.

This surprise decision about the grand jury by District Attorney Molly Chilson left many hopeful family and friends “shocked.”

11th Judicial District Attorney-elect Molly Chilson has opted not to seek a grand jury or file charges in the case.

“I made the decision charges should not be filed based on a lack of evidence. I reviewed the entire case file, and I feel (Chaffee County sheriff’s) Detective Andy Rohrich did a fantastic job of getting answers for the family, but there was nothing about those remains that told me how she died,” Chilson explained.

“There is no evidence from the 1980s — not even photographs,” she said.

Chilson’s decision is, “The biggest disappointment of my career,” said Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze, who has been a cop for 35 years.

“I am not giving up,” Spezze said. “We are so close to solving this case.”

Spezze said there is ample circumstantial evidence and, “That is why you go to the grand jury so the people have the chance to hear the evidence.” He said he feels people with knowledge of the case would testify truthfully before a grand jury.

A 36-year-old cold case is heating up, leading local law enforcement officials to continue their investigation despite a district attorney’s decision not to file charges.

“Over the past several days the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office and the Salida Police Department have received new information in regards to the disappearance and homicide of Beverly England,” said Sheriff John Spezze.

“Through the course of this investigation we have identified local persons of interest and we also believe that these persons have shared information with others in regards to the disappearance and homicide of Beverly England,” Spezze said. “We are still actively investigating all leads and any information provided in regards to this investigation.”

Remains of 1980 cold case victim believed found in Chaffee County

Investigators from local and federal agencies said they believed they found the remains of a woman who disappeared from Salida nearly 40 years ago.

Beverly England, a 32-year-old mother of two, went missing on June 12, 1980.

The remains will be sent to a pathology lab at the University of North Texas northwest of Dallas, where they will be analyzed for identification.

“There were several remains that displayed possible damage and this could possibly reveal a cause of death,” the sheriff’s office said.

Praise and respect for the prosecutor and investigators who've continued to pursue this case over the years. That's a tough job climbing that steep mountainside for 5 days to retrieve more evidence. I hope they found what they needed this time.

"May 10, 2019. SALIDA, Colo. Law enforcement officials in Chaffee County are applauding the news that 11th Judicial District Attorney Molly Chilson intends to resign next month. They believe a change at the top of that office could spark progress in a decades-old murder case.

Chilson has refused to bring the case of Beverly England to a grand jury, citing financial reasons. That has stalled the case that investigators say is ready to move forward with a suspect identified that they believe is responsible for the homicide.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office began an aggressive renewed investigation in the death of England, a 32-year-old Colorado mother who disappeared 39 years ago. She was last seen in 1980 in Salida."

DA's Resignation Could Change Course Of Cold Case Murder Investigation

May 30, 2019. "The homicide investigation into the death of Beverly England remains active.

“We’re still working on the case and I can’t discuss it further,” Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze said. “We’re exploring other avenues with other agencies. The resignation of the DA (11th Judicial District Attorney Molly Chilson), effective June 8, opens another avenue of opportunity, and we’ll revisit a grand jury possibility.”...

Numerous pieces of evidence were recovered in the first search and a broader search was conducted in October of 2018,” Spezze said. “Some items are still awaiting identification from a lab.”"

Colorado Cold Cases: 39 years ago today Beverly England vanished and authorities are still piecing together how she died: Decayed bones may offer critical evidence for murder charges

"Before she disappeared 39 years ago, England dropped off her two small children at the home of a fellow member of the Temple Baptist Church so she could meet with a pregnant woman at Riverside Park, according to a previous interview with Leonard Post, a former Salida Police Department chief.

The woman England was to meet with was married to a man that England was having an affair with, Post said."

Thank you all for your continued interest in my Mom's case. Sadly on thus 42 nd anniversary of her murder, there is still no new news. I'm at my wits end and my heart breaks more and more each day. My hope is dwindling beyond words and my faith in the justice system has been smashed. A murderer has gotten away with it 42 devastating years. Heartbroken, her daughter Bricia
