[h=1]ID of human skull found at Mud Lake in Boulder County remains a mystery[/h]

The Boulder County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices have not been able to identify the human skull found near Mud Lake last year, and also have been unable to find any more human remains or determine how the person died.

The skull was found by a hiker on Oct. 2 in unincorporated Boulder County near the town of Nederland.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday that it received the results of an anthropological examination of the skull and believed it belonged to a man between the ages of 30 and 60 years old, and estimated the skull was in the environment for less than five years.

A hiker walking his dog in an open space parcel in Boulder County found a human skull Monday morning and alerted authorities.

The discovery happened about 8:45 a.m. in Mud Lake Open Space, 2034 County Road 126, near Nederland, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies and investigators were led by the hiker to the area, and the discovery was confirmed to be that of a human skull. A search of the immediate area, which was hampered by about 2-inches of fresh snow, did not uncover further remains. Additional searches will be made, weather permitting.

Facial Reconstruction Complete For Human Remains From Mud Lake

According to a news release from the sheriff's office, a University of North Texas analysis revealed the skull to belong to a man of mixed European ancestry, between 30-60 years old. A full facial reconstruction was completed by Community Service Officer Beth Buchholtz of the Longmont Police Department.
