Here is an interesting looking report I had not seen before about this case and the suspect arrested in it. Others can correct me but I think he was one of or the main FBI Profiler first involved with that other Colorado case the murder of JonBenet Ramsey:

1984 Aurora hammer killer evolved into predator, FBI profiler says
Thanks, that was an interesting article! rbbm.
"By no means was the hammer killer sophisticated enough to pick locks or use glass cutters to enter homes. Instead. he went to areas he was familiar with and went from home to home trying door knobs. If windows and doors were locked at one home, he immediately went on to the next residence.

“He was very juvenile in his approach. How does he gain entry into homes? He walks down the street and jiggles doors,” Walker concluded. His profile recommended detectives look for a very young man in his early to mid-20s, he said.

Walker recommended that police fingerprint every doorknob and window in the neighborhoods where the attacks happened. The suspect likely went down a row of homes until he found an open door.

That meant the killer was not a stalker, who watched a neighborhood for hours, days or weeks until he knew all the habits of his victims, Walker said. Instead, he was a minimally skilled prowler who randomly targeted homes in areas where he had familiarity, either because he lived or worked nearby. All four home invasions in the Denver area were along an east to west corridor, within a few blocks of Hampden Avenue, he said.

Most importantly, Walker predicted the attacker’s background would include acts of violence, whether he was the victim or perpetrator. It could be that he was the victim of child abuse. Another possible scenario was that he had been beaten up or chased away by a physically-larger homeowner during a home burglary. It’s possible the homeowner never reported the confrontation to police, he added.

This would teach the burglar to enter homes with protection, Walker said. The weapons chosen also said something about the killer. The unsophisticated burglar apparently didn’t have the resources to buy a gun. Instead, he used a weapon readily available to him that he was familiar with. From then on he would be armed when he entered homes because he wouldn’t know what he was going to find when he got inside."

How come I didn't know about this case? I just read the whole thread. It's heartbreaking! :( I hope Vanessa is alright and happy.

I'm so relieved they found him in time for his first parole hearing in 2021. Is that why he is delaying extradition now? Is he hoping to be paroled before they can nail him for the murders in Colorado?

NEW: Police release photos from the 1980s of Alex Christopher Ewing, suspect in 1984 hammer killings of Patricia Louise Smith and Bruce, Debra and Melissa Bennett. #9WantsToKnow #9NEWS

Hammer murder suspect seeking delay in extradition as he prepares appeal to U.S. Supreme Court

January 31, 2020

AURORA, Colo. — The attorney for a man suspected in four brutal 1984 hammer murders in the Denver area has asked for another delay in his extradition to Colorado as he tries to get the U.S. Supreme Court to block his transfer, 9Wants to Know has learned.

In an “emergency motion” filed late Thursday night, Alex Christopher Ewing’s attorney asked the Nevada Supreme Court to grant a 120-day stay of its earlier order that denied his appeal and set the stage for his extradition.

If the court doesn’t grant the motion, Ewing could be brought to Colorado as soon as Feb. 19.
[.....]
Jefferson County prosecutors have formally charged Ewing with four counts of first-degree murder and two counts of committing a crime of violence in the murder of Smith at the condominium she shared with her daughter and grandchildren. Smith, 50, was raped and beaten to death with an auto body hammer after apparently being surprised by an intruder while eating lunch.
[.....]
Arapahoe County prosecutors have not formally charged Ewing in the Bennett case but have an arrest warrant obtained in 2002 that lists 13 separate charges, including six counts of first-degree murder and four counts of sexual assault.

https://lasvegassun.com/news/2020/feb/22/nevada-court-sending-inmate-to-colorado-in-4-hamme/

DENVER — Nevada's Supreme Court has ordered a prisoner transferred to Colorado to face charges of killing four people with a hammer more than 30 years ago.
[.....]
He's been in prison in Carson City since 1985 on a 40-year sentence for trying to kill a Nevada couple with an ax handle.
[.....]
His attorney has been fighting to block his transfer for more than a year, saying it could expose him to the death penalty in Colorado.

When the Nevada Supreme Court denied Ewing’s final appeal on Jan. 24, it started the clock on a 25-day waiting period before it could issue the paperwork necessary to extradite him to Colorado.

The court's ruling Friday denied Ewing's attempt to put the case on hold, pending his petition to the U.S. Supreme Court that challenges the extradition.

Just checked the court sites - nothing there yet for him. I'll put him on my look.up.every.day list... :)

CO - CO - Bruce, 27, Debra, 26, & Melissa Bennett, 7, Aurora, 16 Jan 1984

7/24/19 Update: The attorneys for the Nevada inmate accused of four 1984 hammer murders in the Denver area want another timeout in the fight over his extradition to Colorado – their fourth request for a delay in the case. Ewing’s final brief was due Wednesday. “Mr. Ewing and his counsel are unable to complete and file a reply brief by the above deadline,” attorney Martin H. Wiener wrote in a motion filed Tuesday night. Heather Proctor, chief deputy attorney general for Nevada, immediately filed a motion opposing Wiener’s request for more time. It is not clear how soon the Nevada Supreme Court will take action on Wiener’s motion. They want an additional 60 days. ~Sept. 24th.
9/26/19 Update: Lawyers filed extension for extradition for 60 days. Judge denies motions – give defense until 10/2 to file final extradition paperwork.
10/2/19 Update: An attorney for Ewing lashed out at that State’s Supreme Court in his final brief filed as part of the ongoing effort to block his transfer to Colorado. Although he had already asked for – and been granted – multiple delays, attorney Martin Wiener objected to an order last week by the Nevada Supreme Court that he file his final appeal paperwork by the end of the day Thursday, 10/4/19, which he filed 8 minutes before the deadline. It is not clear what the Nevada Supreme Court will do next – it can hold oral arguments, or it can rule on the briefs that have been filed.
11/22/19 Update: In a ruling issued Friday, the Nevada Supreme court unanimously denied Alexander Christopher Ewing’s appeal of a lower court’s decision to extradite him to Colorado to face the murder charges in connection with the slayings that happened in a suburb of Denver in 1984.
1/30/20 Update: Defense attorney has asked for another delay in his extradition to Colorado as he tries to get the U.S. Supreme Court to block his transfer. 19.
2/21/20 Update: Nevada's Supreme Court has ordered Ewing to be transferred to Colorado to face charges of killing four people with a hammer more than 30 years ago.
2/28/20 Update: Ewing has been extradited to the Arapahoe County Jail in Colorado. Advisement hearing is scheduled on 3/2.

Hammer attack suspect makes first court appearance in 1984 killings of 3 members of the Bennett family

March 02, 2020

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — Alex Christopher Ewing made his first court appearance Monday morning in one of Colorado’s most notorious murder cases – the killings of three members of the Bennett family in 1984 in Aurora.

Ewing, 59, arrived in court wearing a red jail jumpsuit, white socks, and orange sandals. A chain connected from his handcuffs to his ankle shackles jangled as he walked.

He faces 13 separate counts, alleging that he was the hammer-wielding attacker who killed Bruce and Debra Bennett and their 7-year-old daughter, Melissa, and critically injured the couple’s other daughter, 3-year-old Vanessa.
[.....]
Although the hearing lasted nearly an hour, Ewing spoke only five times, softly answering, "Yes, ma'am" when District Judge Michelle A. Amico asked him if he understood the requirements of a protection order she issued. It bars him from contacting, harassing or intimidating weapons in the case, and from possessing weapons or ammunition.

He is being held without bail.
[.....]
Ewing faces another court hearing in Jefferson County – it's set for March 10 – in the murder of Patricia Louise Smith, who was beaten to death in her Golden townhome a week before the Bennett killings.
[.....]
Ewing is scheduled to back in court in Arapahoe County in the Bennett case April 3.
[.....]
Jefferson County prosecutors have formally charged Ewing with four counts of first-degree murder and two counts of committing a crime of violence in Smith’s murder. One of the murder counts accuses Ewing of killing Smith “after deliberation.” Each of the three other murder counts alleges that he killed her while committing another crime – robbery, burglary and sexual assault.
