CO - Colorado Springs NAACP chapter bombed

  • #21
If one reads the 18 page affidavit you can follow the process the the police and others went through to identify the suspect in the bombing. Its really very interesting. Very by the book, slow and plodding. In the beginning, they really did think that the hair salon or the NAACP office were the likely targets. In the end, its a good thing because it allowed them to get out of state information that helped to identity the current suspect and arrest him.

There is an 18 page affidavit that describes the case against Murphy and how they got there. I accidently closed the link where I found the affidavit so I will have to find it again.

Anyhow, at the very end of the affidavit, it says that Murphy says his target was Steven DeHaven, who had done some tax preparation for him back in 2006, if I remember correctly, and who he needed some tax papers and info from because the IRS has been after Murphy. His attempts to contact Dehaven were fruitless.

So..... I am looking to see if I can find Dehaven's address and lo and behold, it turns out that on June 11, 2010 Steven Dehaven entered a guilty plea for the preparation of false tax returns. It seems that between the years 2003 and 2006 he had put together 84 false returns!!!

If Murphy had used the internet to find info on Dehaven rather than how to make bombs he would have become aware of the indictment of his tax preparer and ultimate guilty plea. He wouldn't have needed to bomb him.

I am sure there is more info on Dehaven but I just couldn't wait to alert everyone to my stunning discovery.

COLORADO SPRINGS CPA TENDERS GUILTY PLEA TO PREPARING FALSE TAX RETURNS

http://www.justice.gov/usao/co/news/2010/June10/6_11_10.html

”According to the stipulated facts contained in the Information and subsequent plea agreement, DeHaven received his Colorado Certified Public Accountant’s license in 1984, and has worked in the accounting field for approximately 25 years. Beginning in 2004, DeHaven began operating a tax preparation business, Steven DeHaven CPA, from an office in his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. From 2004 through approximately April, 2007, Mr. DeHaven assisted a number of his clients with the preparation and filing of materially false and fraudulent tax returns. Often, the clients were not aware of the false and fraudulent nature of these returns."

The affidavit can be accessed at this link:

http://www.9news.com/story/news/local/investigations/2015/02/20/colorado-springs-bombing/23742111/

”Murphy told investigators he intended to target the tax preparation company and not the NAACP during an interview, according to sources.

An affidavit said Murphy was targeting an accountant named Steve Dehaven who "wouldn't return to him his tax records from 2006 to the present and wouldn't return his phone calls." The affidavit says Murphy had to file bankruptcy and needed the records due to his financial issues.

The affidavit claimed he "flipped out" and "built the pipe bomb as a warning.""

http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_27566608/man-arrested-bombing-near-colorado-naacp-office

"Henry D. Allen Jr., president of Colorado Springs Chapter of the NAACP, said he's worked out of the organization's office in the building since 1999, and he is "not aware" of an accountant working in the same, small building.

The only other business in the building is Mr. G's Hair Design Studios, Allen said. Gene H. Southerland owns the barber shop as well as the building.

Contacted by telephone Friday, Southerland declined comment.

A sign on the side of the building, prior to the incident, advertised: "Income Tax." The sign has since been removed.

"I'm glad someone was apprehended," Allen said. "I'm very cautious about what the rational was for this.""

I'm literally LMAO .

I guess that I should be happy for you, as they say laughter is the best medicine, but it's worth pointing out that after re-reading the posts, I noticed that nobody here labeled it as a race crime.

I doubt this thread would have started if the headline read "man tries to blow up his tax preparers office" JMO

Really? I don't see why that sort of story would not be thread-worthy. There is no shortage of people who have problem with taxation. And there have been many bombings/arsons that have had coverage here.

Nor would those of us who suggested waiting on the facts have been met with derision and sarcasm. I did notice numerous posts have been deleted so all's well that ends well.
