CO CO - Dale Williams, 42, Nucla, CO May 27,1999

We believe the caller was a female, and whether they knew of any further plan, I don't know. Maybe someone convinced her it would be a fun joke.

I believe they tried to. It was 1999, so it was a lot harder to track someone down. I think it was a burner phone and that the call was NOT made anywhere near Bedrock. For one, if there's cell service there now, there definitely wasn't then. I am pretty sure that the owners of the Bedrock Store knew my dad, everyone knew him, and if, big 'if', it was a stranded motorist that called from the store for assistance, it's likely that the owners would have suggested my father. But again, I want to reiterate that I do not think the person who called was a stranded motorist. I think it was someone the assailant knew and manipulated them somehow into calling my dad - and that my dad, likely knew the person calling but may not have recognized their voice because he just knew them - not spent any significant time with them. I think that if they told my dad who they were on the phone, that my dad would have told Tom Ross who he was going to help.
Has anyone talked with the ex-wife, the one Dale and Diana helped moved? I'm just curious if this former friend found his ex at some point, even just calling, harassing her. If he had something to do with Dale's disappearance, he might've threatened to do the same to her. Or she may be able to shed light on her ex's friends that may be involved.

Thank you, dotr, for sharing this Cold Case update for Dale Williams. It's good news to know the reporter is involved with solving Cold Cases. I pray the efforts prove to be fruitful. It'd be helpful to learn who Dale was going to help out that day. I suppose the phone call was a ruse and a set up, sadly.

I've been to Montrose. When scooting along the Highway, we had to stop suddenly as a herd of cattle was crossing from one side to the other side of the road. It was an amazing experience. The reporter, in the video you've kindly posted, also mentioned Telluride, CO. Telluride is where Det James Kolar hails from. He was the Town Marshal of Telluride when he took a sabbatical to investigate the JonBenet murder. Boulder's then, DA Hunter, asked him to "spy" on the Ramsey's who were in town snow skiing with friends in Telluride. There's a photo of author Kolar wearing his ski attire using binoculars to watch the R's skiing on the mountain due to the DA's request.

May Dale's family find the answers they seek. Someone knows something.

“The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office and CBI are working in tandem to solve a missing persons case that originated in 1999,” Sheriff Gene Lillard said Monday, Oct. 23.

The only missing persons case from Nucla at that time was that of Dale Williams, and Lillard confirmed the search was related to that case.

On Oct. 18, the agencies came to the Nucla residence on a tip that a body might be buried on the property. They obtained a search warrant on Oct. 19 and on Oct. 20 and 21, searched the home and garage there.

Third-party information can be found at whereisdalewilliams.net or on Facebook, “Missing: Dale Williams.”

Please check this out! This mystery would be huge for my community to finally have the answers to! His daughters and wife still have hope.
The “suspected individual” is still living in the town and isn’t seen out and about much but supposedly had an alibi. I’ve also heard rumors of drug involvement and knowing to much on dales part but nothing is confirmed.”
24 years and in a town where everyone knows everything it doesn’t make sense that this hasn’t been solved.

That video was interesting. It seems likely the former friend is the culprit. I wonder how much they questioned him, and if he had an alibi.

Williams was last seen on May 27th, 1999.
''68-year-old Dan Bishop of Naturita was taken into custody Thursday and was booked into the Montrose County Detention Center.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office opened a new inquiry in September of 2023 regarding the unresolved case.

At the time of Williams' disappearance, he owned an auto body shop in Nucla. An investigation revealed Williams and his wife helped Bishop’s wife leave her then-husband (Bishop) and resettle in Texas at an undisclosed location.''

'Bishop was known to show some resentment towards Dale before his disappearance; the affidavit confirmed Bishop was resentful of Dale and his wife’s close relationship.

Williams had found torn-up photos and .22 caliber bullets scattered on the ground at Williams’ business. His wife also discovered a .22 caliber gun in the drop box of the video store where she worked.
After his disappearance, Bishop was seen taking down missing posters of Williams in the post office.'

''Naturita resident Dan Bishop, 68, will be in court both on Jan. 8 and 9 for the hearing in the Montrose County Courthouse in Nucla. Law enforcement alleges Bishop reportedly traded his beloved Corvette to his cousin, Veldon Barnes – a career criminal who’s now deceased – in exchange for killing Williams.

Barnes, while in prison, confided to a fellow inmate he was responsible for a man’s death, the affidavit alleges.''

So glad to hear there is movement in this case. I'm curious about the details.

Dale Williams was presumably murdered by a childhood friend 25 years ago.

….

Dan Bishop introduced his wife to Dale Williams. She learned Bishop and Williams graduated from high school together.
Over time, the marriage worsened. The wife decided to leave. Dale Williams and his wife, Diana, drove the woman and her son halfway to Texas.
Bishop swore to exact revenge on Williams for helping her.

An arrest affidavit written by Colorado Bureau of Investigation Agent Brandon Ludwig contains details of the alleged crime.

  • Someone broke into the auto body shop owned by Dale Williams prior to his disappearance. A torn-up photograph of Dale, Diane, Dan Bishop, and his wife Elvira Bishop - the only picture of the two couples together, according to Stavrowsky - was found outside the shop. On it were placed several .22 caliber bullets.
  • Shortly after that, a handgun stolen from the auto body shop during that break-in was found in the drop-box of a video rental store. That store was then the employer of Diana Williams, Dale's wife.
  • Investigators learned Bishop gave his cousin, Veldon Barnes, a Corvette the same day Dale Williams disappeared. Barnes was a convicted felon who, while incarcerated in the Mesa County jail in 2000, was overhead by another inmate saying, "f they ever caught me for what I had really done I'd be on death row or a life sentence."
[*]The inmate also heard Veldon make a comment about authorities not charging someone with murder if they were unable to find a body, according to the affidavit. Barnes, it should be noted, has passed away since Williams's disappearance.
[*]After Williams's disappearance, Bishop was recorded on surveillance cameras tearing down posters at the Nucla post office which pleaded for information in the case.
[*]Investigators searched Bishop's Nucla property in October 2023. This included an excavation in hopes of locating Williams's body. No body was found.
[*]Bishop was interviewed by investigators 10 days before his October arrest. He admitted standing down the street from the auto body shop with his cousin as Dale Williams left town on the stranded motorist call but accused his deceased cousin of killing Williams. He also said his rifle had been missing since his Stavrowsky left him.

During a brief hearing Monday, Lavrisha and Soileau sought information as to whether a grand jury had been convened in the Williams case, possibly in 2002. Waggoner did not work for the District Attorney’s Office at the time and does not have access to grand jury information from that time. She said she searched available paper records and found nothing about a grand jury, so if there was one, she has no evidence of it.

Lavrisha said if the case had gone to a grand jury, Rule 16 obligations apply and the defense needs a means of finding out, even if it means a hearing that elicits testimony from past DA’s Office employees.

“It’s a difficult case. It is circumstantial evidence, This is a mixture of a cold case with the lack of a decedent. It’s a difficult case. It was a difficult decision I made, but I made the decision because I thought it was in the best interests,” Cooling said, reiterating that investigators are regrouping and working with the attorney general’s office. “I think it behooves us to make a hard decision. And it was a hard decision to make.”
