How to Become an FBI Special Agent

Oddly, at least by the raw criteria, it doesn't seem like getting into the FBI is that hard.

This looks pretty much like what I would imagine the requirements would be to become a cop, except I'm sure the background check is more thorough and maybe higher fitness requirement, and I'm not sure if a bachelor's degree is required for cops.

I could be way wrong, but in any case if it's THAT much easier than what I posted above to get a job in regular LE, that's scary.

In the past, to be a Special Agent, you really needed to have a law degree. There were other ways, but they were special circumstances. You could have an accounting degree and language and computer skills, but while those people worked for the fbi, they weren't Special Agents. That seems to have changed and they are accepting other applicants now. That maybe isn't a good idea.

I don't find it unusual that there was a round in the chamber, that is how law enforcement carry. But clearly not on safe. I would like to know what the firearm is. After it fell he just grabbed for it instead of calmly picking it up. I am sure he hoped to get it before anyone saw, but it caused him to grab and a finger hit the trigger. The really disturbing thing is that after the gun discharges, he just seems to try to play it off and walk away. He should have immediately looked to see if anyone was hit and stay right where he was and identified himself. He acted very immature.

The one bad thing about the revolver is 6 shots and then reload which in itself can be clumsy. Not sure but I think they switched to 9 mm after FBI agents were grossly overpowered by the 2 bank robbers in Miami (mid 80s?). Can't recall but I'm thinking 3 agents were killed in a shootout with the bank robbers.

You have a good memory and you are correct that the Miami incident led to stronger department issued handguns. I first thought it maybe was the big shootout in California where the bank robbers had on body armour as that was an amazing shootout too. But you are correct it was the Miami incident in 1986.

"This incident led to the introduction of more effective handguns in the FBI and many police departments around the United States."

1986 FBI Miami shootout - Wikipedia

And you are also correct that revolvers will limit your shells to usually 6. Some smaller revolvers have even less. I can see where LE would not want to limit their police force so that is a good point. Although the speed loaders they make for revolvers work pretty well. I have a speed loader for my S+W .357 and was quite surprised how well it works to get 6 fresh shells quickly into the gun.

For the California incident below is a helicopter video of the incident. LE had to go to a nearby gun store to get more powerful weapons. You have to go forward into the video to get to the incident.

ETA I deleted the first other article as picture was too graphic. This one is actual helicopter coverage.

The California shootout I believe was just LAPD. The Miami shootout was FBI agents who had been investigating armored car robberies. There is a great movie about it but the name escapes me right now. It had the guy from the old Starsky & Hutch series as one of the robbers. Those robbers were armed with mini-14s I believe and the FBI agents had revolvers and shotguns. The robbers had already killed before and were not going to go down without a fight.

I think i found the movie name. Called "In the Line of Duty - The FBI Murders". I have never seen it but now I want to see this movie someday as the writeup says it was very accurate in its portrayal of the incident. I like learning about history of real events and it sounds like this movie does the incident justice.

Thanks for the reference.

Thats it!! Michael Gross was in it and David Soul. Highly recommend it. Those were two evil men for sure. (the criminals, not the actors!)

Well, let me just say that after Director Wrays press conference today regarding the IG's report about Comey and other agents "missteps", I would not be surprised if this young man is terminated from the Bureau. Soon.

FBI agent avoids jail time after gun fires while dancing
DECEMBER 21, 2018
An FBI agent whose gun went off while dancing at a Denver nightclub, injuring a bystander, has pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and will avoid jail time, CBS Denver reported.

Chase Bishop, 30, appeared in a Denver courtroom Friday and was sentenced to two years of probation.

Bishop's gun went off on June 2 inside Mile High Spirits Tasting Room. The shot struck a man in the leg, seriously wounding him.
[...]

My question is—what would have happened to an ‘ordinary citizen’ with a carry permit, in similar circumstances.
