I agree Zoey. For JH, life in prison or institution is preferable to life on the outside. He wants to be left alone, out of society with little or no responsibility.

This is sort of my sense as well. I think if he had truly strongly feared prison he would have killed himself at the theater that night. He spent so long planning this event... he probably wanted to stick around to see the outcome from it.

He had that opportunity to get shot leaving the theater but chose to surrender---in some of his ramblings--he was planning on jail.
As for his "break down" in November 2012--I blaming that one on no water or food

I wonder if now that JH has spent the past three years dealing with the court system if he wishes he had committed suicide.

Have wondered the same. You in US have "real" prisons and long sentences unlike us in the UK so it did puzzle me re his not planning to get shot/commit suicide. Guess his self- worth wasn't that low after all?!

When he came out of the theater, he could have allowed himself to be killed by the cops, or he could have killed himself.

He said he didn't want to be killed by the cops.... and even though he never said it, its clear from his actions that he did not attempt to kill himself.

This makes me understand why Reid was emphasizing that JH's attempt to say he "converted" his suicide feelings to homicidal was pretty much hogwash. I don't think JH was suicidal.

The root issue, IMO, was that he knew he couldn't fit in with others, and this angered him. And as the years went on, this anger grew, and led to him deciding to commit mass murder. This was to get back at everyone who rejected him, build his self-worth, and gain notoriety.
