I'm so glad George Brauchler is addressing the schizophrenia issue! Most schizophrenics are not violent and are more often victims of violent crime - not perpetrators.

Agreed Maisie. I read recently (cant remember the link) that only 4 or 5% of the mentally ill population are responsible for violent crime.

I'm glad the jury got to hear this info. It's really important and relevant!

Hi Lindyloo,

I wonder if JH is happy with schizotypal!!!
Seeing as I don't remember it from his list of self diagnosed MH complaints in the notebook.
As for malingering, Reid also said that people who are mentally ill can exaggerate their MH issues too.
I wish he would/could say, that in his view JH is manipulative.

Their is a psych blogger that tried to diagnose him pre-trial, will try and find the link again. Anyway this blogger linked a disorder to a domineering parental influence. Not saying I agree with that and too many times mothers get the blame for everything ( plus blogger knew he was speculating without full case details ), but I did find it interesting to later hear Reid ask him how often he was disciplined and JH replied he got spanked once a month as a kid.

Does anyone know what kind of nurse his mum is? I read psych nurse but that could be incorrect.

Me to as Dr. Reid treating myself or family..He's as honest as the day is long..

I know he said..no to malingering but I think he's suspicious..however this Schizotypal personality disorder fits him to a "T" and wouldn't say Malingering..but these people (JH) often behave that way too..so refused to call it actual malingering since he can't prove it..and we all know he wouldn't say or diagnose something without being sure....I trust Dr. Reid very much!!

I couldn't agree more LyndyLoo.

BBM--Determining the presence of Malingering is a very difficult thing to do, and proving it is immensely more difficult!! There is no instrument available in the field that specifically "tests" for malingering--of course there are many instruments with built in constructs, or face value test items used to identify response bias, to detect it's presence but it is secondary to the stated primary purpose of any given test. Unfortunately the detection of Malingering is an inexact science, and concluding that someone is malingering-- particularly those who are intelligent/clever--requires great professional skill but at the end of the day it relies heavily on the interpretative judgment of the individual professional.

BTW, Does anyone know if the MMPI was administered to JH? TIA

I do know he had DSM5 ..but at this point no idea of what else..He's been assessed by over a dozen Psychiatrist..so who knows right now..Hope I've answered your question.

Having said that tho..Dr. Reid was brought in by the court ( neither side) and was tasked to confirm given all the informations that took him a few months to go thru over 75,000 pages of documents..interviewed and spoke with those who rendered opinions from both before and after event..then actually did his 22 hour taped interview..a VERY thorough Conscientious job..interviewed friends, family etc..!! He didn't even see JH until 2 years after the event!! I'm sure def. experts will point to whatever tests they did..Time will tell I guess!

Yes Reid commissioned the tests to be done by the psychologists. Someone with a better memory will remember all the acronyms. I am pretty sure one was MMPI - this was stated in cross x by King.

So the Doc used the DSM V, not the ICD, to diagnose JH, ok thanks LL. But they haven't mentioned the instruments that were utilized to evaluate him? TIA

Thanks Cotton, did they happen to present the documented results in court yet? IIRC Dr. Reid testified that JH had a Personality Disorder but I don't recall any tweets telling us WHICH PD Holmes has, so just trying to figure out why that hasn't been examined in testimony? I can no longer watch the trial so having to come here and read tweets--any help would be appreciated.

Is this just going on way to long for anyone else? The pauses Mr. King does to review his notes or whatever don't help

Another Nurmi?

My nephew is schizophrenic. When not medicated, he is extremely violent.

All I can attest to is that Dr. read actually read out loud what DSM V was set up to do with all the parameters. and cautioned to apply other evidence ( such as interviews/ specific tests etc) before coming up with actual diagnosis.. BUT because Dr. Reid's task was very narrow..he couldn't testify to test results and go further ..only whether he was Insane or Sane plus had the Capacity to know Right from wrong in his decision making...So due to that..jury could only consider both the interview ( 22 hours) and his testimony regarding his expert opinion of Sanity or Legally Insane as per Colorado Law... I'm willing to bet Def. will spend days on Psycho Babble to try and snow job the jury...
Prosecutions does have another Psych Expert..not sure name..Think it phonetically sounded like Metzner:facepalm:
