Freshman usually about 14, Sophomore about 15 - first and second year of high school.

So the defence are trying to show there was a big difference in the shooters behaviour from age ten to fourteen/fifteen.

I guess so, but many kids are shy at the beginning of high school. I don't get how this teacher remembers how uncomfortable JH was, if he was practically invisible?
I'm sure you're right about what the defense is going for, I just don't think they're getting there, IMO
