Cold case: Who murdered Jessica Arredondo 33 years ago?

Cold case: Larimer police still seek information about brutal homicide

A woman was abducted after a car crash and later found dead. Authorities are still looking for information on what happened.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is still seeking the identification of the person(s) involved in the death of 22-year-old Jessica Arredondo.

Arredondo was last seen alive on November 25, 1988, when she dropped her boyfriend off at Neil’s, a bar in Glendale, south of Denver, according to the Denver Bureau of Investigation Cold Case files website.

Her car, a red 1988 Mustang convertible, was found abandoned a few blocks away from the bar at east Seventh Street and Jackson Street in Denver. The car appeared to have been involved in an accident.

Witnesses reported seeing Arredondo being abducted from the accident site by “‘several unknown male suspects,’” according to the details of her case.

The next day, her body was located on the side of US 36 near Estes Park in Larimer County. The investigation revealed Arredondo had suffered fatal blows to her head.

Arredondo was a white woman with black eyes and hair. She stood at 5’5” and weighed 120 pounds at the time of her death.

Jessica Ann Arredondo, 21, liked to care for her brand new 1988 Mustang convertible that she had just purchased on her own. It was her pride and joy. She was also very fond of her dog, Frosty.

Jessica was employed by US West as an Information Operator. On the evening of Nov 25, 1988, she and her boyfriend were going to meet some friends, but she decided to drop him off instead and pick him up later. An eyewitness saw Jessica being followed or chased by one or two cars. She was involved in a minor car accident at the corner of 7th & Jackson in Denver. Her car was found there, locked with flashers on.

The next day, her body was discovered just off Highway 36 near Estes Park. No one has ever been charged with this crime. Five years later, waitress Rhonda Mallony was kidnapped and murdered by Robert Harlan who is now on death row in Cañon City. Harlan was an Information Operator at US West in 1988. He denies killing Jessica.

She had suffered fatal blows to her head. Investigation produced condemned killer Robert Harlan as a suspect. Harlan, the son of a Denver Police officer, now sits on Colorado's Death Row for the 1993 slaying of Rhonda Maloney, a Central City casino waitress he abducted and killed. Harlan was also found guilty of shooting and paralyzing Jacque Creazzo, the woman who tried to come to Maloney's aid. Harlan became a suspect in the Arredondo slaying after police interviewed his former co-workers at US West where Arredondo worked as an Information Operator.
