What a fantastic turn-out by LE and the Denver community! Jessica has been on the SF area newscasts and radio news. So impressive.

May she be brought home safe and sound. Prayers going up for Jessica and her family.

This is so close to where Jessica went missing, and it was in broad daylight. There was a similar attempt on a woman in 2010 that was also thwarted.

JMO-there is a strong possibility this person is involved. Maybe he figured he would have better luck overpowering a child since his attempts on grown women failed. If he used chloroform or a similar chemical like he did with the jogger attack, he would be able to get her under his control pretty quickly and without attracting much notice.

The one thought that gives me some comfort is that in cases of stranger abductions, older children seem to be more likely to be kept alive for some reason-think Jaycee Dugard, Shawn Hornbeck, Elizabeth Smart, etc.

I hope I am wrong, but it sounds like the police are giving up already. Isn't it a bit early to call off all searches?

I had the same thought. Why I wonder are local area searches called off?

Their post on their Facebook page says they're bringing in a new team of dogs, so they probably don't want all those extra people around with extra scents and so forth.

Ten isn't 5, or 6. I don't think it is terrible for a 10-year old to walk a bit to meet up with friends, as a rule. It is possible that whatever happened to Jessica could have happened just by going outside to check the mail.

BBM. A good description of what I fear most after seeing the map of the immediate neighborhood. The homes sit very close to the street. The driveways look to be a car length or so long/deep at most. The sidewalk is so small and right next to the street.

Seeing all the cars parked on the street so close to the sidewalk, my immediate thoughts were large cars, small kids, sidewalk almost ontop of the street. That's not an area condusive to walking. Now I am fearing an accident. What if someone hit her, got scared and hid her?

Call me chicken, but I'd be scared to death to let small children walk on sidewalks that are that close to the street.

Oh, ok thanks car buff. Praying for Jessica to be found and brought home soon.
Thinking out loud.....Why did this little girl disappear so close to the time her custody was to be decided? Gosh, I'm afraid she's laying on the cold snow covered ground....or maybe worse..... in a car with a stranger. :please:

I live just south of her neighborhood and joined the search for a few hours this afternoon today. Our group searched a park/open space area in my neighborhood, about 2 miles south (as the crow flies) of where she disappeared.

FWIW, she does not have a 1.3-mile walk to school. Like any of the kids around here, I'm sure she took the straightest path, which would be across the open space to the back end of the school and then to wherever her classroom is. That's typical for all the schools in the area. The news reports seem to assume that she stays on the road the entire way, but if she did, there's no way she'd make it to school on time (she reportedly left at 8:30 and school starts at 8:50. The average person walks about 1 mile in 20 minutes, kids tend to be slower). Many kids walk to school in this area.

Regarding the attempted abductions in the area: those both took place miles south, around 58th Ave and maybe a little further north. Last fall a man tried to lure kids into his car a couple of times too, though not near a school, and none of them were north of 80th Ave. All of these attempts were several miles south. Obviously, that doesn't stop someone from coming further north, but all other attempts had been concentrated in a very different area that's at least a 15-20 minute drive with traffic and stoplights and all.

What is more concerning is that on Memorial Day, a man grabbed a woman jogging and put a cloth smelling like some sort of chemicals over her mouth and nose. She fought her way free. There was a similar attempt in 2010. Reports that say Labor Day are incorrect, and I know this because I'd just run that same trail at Ketner Reservoir the evening before. IIRC, the attempt took place on the west or northwest part of the reservoir; Witt Elementary is directly north of the reservoir, just across the street.

This is typical suburbia. There are no homeless people hanging out in our parks, much less sleeping there overnight. Unfortunately, that makes it much more likely that it was someone she knew, probably living very close to her house, or someone who had been watching the school kids for a few days.

Welcome to WS OwlMom. :welcome:

Chelsea King and Amber Dubois.
Along with the jogger that successfully fought him off.
That was my first thought.
