Apologies if this has already been posted but there is a cold case out of Aurora that may be related to this case. Janine Johler, 38, was found deceased and dismembered in June of 2009, roughly a month after she was reported missing. Prior to positive identification, LE thought the body was that of a child. The remains were not fully in tact, as in the JR case, and not all of the remains have been found (it is rumored that the torso was missing). The apple orchard where Janine's body was found is only about half an hour's drive from where JR's body was found. LE referred to the apple orchard as a "dumping site" off Interstate 70. Of note, Janine was reported to have a diminished mental capacity, possibly making her an attractive victim for some unknown perp. No arrests have been made and no suspects named. Could these two cases be related??

This is the closest match I have been able to find:

JRcrossandRTMcross.jpg

The cross is sold on a Rainforest Tropics Missions donation website out of Dalton GA.

It is a : "Carved Rosewood Necklaces from Costa Rica"

Great find. I have been thinking all along it looked Spanish or Mayan. I couldn't tell if this cross has any markings on it, could anyone? tia

I have a few more questions about rosaries, if y'all don't mind.
1. When does a child receive his first rosary? Is it from a godparent or as a baby gift? Or is it First Communion? If both, which would be the one that would be used most?
2. If a rosary breaks, is there a special procedure or something one does with it?

Praying for an arrest soon. Justice or Jessica!!

Okay, I'll tackle these, even though I'm only a Lutheran.

A child can be given a children's plastic rosary at any time. At First Communion a more sophisticated one might be given.

Scanning online Catholic forums, I've seen the answer, "The rosary should be burned if it breaks" given a few times. But, while a broken rosary might be a good subject for a homily at Mass, I doubt whether the Church has an official broken-rosary policy.

so now that we confirmation that LE has the perp's DNA since they were able to rule out Ari on that. Does that mean all the people in the town that had DNA swabs are not the perp? Or just that the DNA has not been ran yet? How many neighbors did they get DNA from?

This isn't most likely a rosary. This (I had thought) looked "prison made" or created in someone's personal workshop with saws, and stain.

I assumed the marks to be tally marks. I believe personally, he's a budding serial killer and Jessica might've been his 3rd victim. Who knows if they are all in the same area or a few states off.

It feels like a calling card. Obviously he wanted her discovered and it be such speculation as to whether it was her, so he could revel in his glory for a few days "is it male or is it female". He don't doubt that the FBI is now taunting him but it's a cat and mouse game.

I had forgotten about that case! Even though I happened to be vacationing over by Glenwood Springs/Aspen when that happened. But just to clarify, that area is about 2 to 2.5 hours from the Denver metro area, not 1/2 hour. (Not saying not related, just was claryifying distances.)

For some reason, I am getting the feeling like this cross was a talisman or "good luck charm" for this person. He kept it in his pocket or on his person all of the time. I think it was dropped on accident. I was thinking maybe it was from an old rosary that had broken.

Not that any of what I said above helps identify it in any way, sadly, other than I think it is probably 5-10 years old.

Not careless enough to be apprehended quickly, though. I just think a teen would leave a trail leading right to his front door.

Obviously, if this is a teen then this is not your average teen. I know a few very intelligent teens. I wouldn't lump this guy into your average, no experience, "dumb" teen. I'm still not sold it's a teen though.

I was just thinking about her the other day in relation to this case as well, not really sure if they are connected at all but it was fairly close to me where she was found. Here is her thread on WS:

And going on the DNA trail, how accurate are the tests to determine ethnicity of the perp? Does LE know this already?

Westminster PD Westminster Police have received a number of tips associated to the cross and suspect description from the Ketner Lake incident. We appreciate the tips that are helping in our Investigation. Police are not looking for explanation or meaning of the markings, but we are looking for who may have worn or had one of these, has or displays other items with identical marks and in particular, a person that fits the suspect description: light skinned male, medium build, average height. Thank you.

Good idea. I am pretty sure ethnicity can be determined and I think it is important in this case. Don't know why, but I do. jmo

I think the cross was on a leather sting and around the perps neck, maybe it was pulled off, and left on accident.

Several commenters on MSM sites are speculating that the cross is "prison made" and "self-crafted"

I have countless religious crosses and rosaries and have never seen one like this. It certainly looks hand-made by some group (that has a cut-out type pattern/template to follow) because it does not appear of mass-production quality. The prison theory makes sense. Also read somewhere that child predators who have served jail time normally kill their victims for fear of being caught and returning.

Carbuff:

"Yes, that looks very similar to the ones the guys around here call pocket rosaries. You slip them over your finger so you can count the beads and pray while you're walking or sitting, without being overly conspicuous."

And the size of the cross seems to fit--one inch by one and a half inches.

I never heard of this kind of rosary. Who would use it? Does the Catholic church have different sects? or associates who help out, who are not really priests? Or are they available anywhere rosaries are sold? Are they used more often in some locations than others? Still pretty distinctive looking.

I'm not really thinking that the perp was really religious at some point... maybe he used the cross/rosary as a keychain, or took it from a relative, etc. Maybe it was broken during the disposal, and only the cross was found?

Just thinking and brainstorming out loud. :)

I think this is definitely a match. From wikipedia re: the Tau Cross

It is strongly identified with the bull in the astrological sign of Taurus

Based on what I know on profiling and psychology , I think that LE might be trying to fish the murder out. The cross information being released might have been to feed the killer the media attention he wants to keep him interested in the coverage of this case. The DNA info being released might be a way to make the murderer nervous. The way they where stating to the public to be careful and the updates with new info released often might be to fed his ego and cause him to react in more predicable ways. Like rope him into a certain type of expected profiled be behavior. Just a thought.
