Good. So the search paper had done a 5 mile perimeter and the bag was found the night of the second full search paper just out of the search.

Obviously this isn't about the person who found the bag but, from Sat AM till he left at 6:30 he didn't turn on the TV or radio once? He didn't notice the helicopters in the area. He didn't listen to the radio in the car when he left at 6:30 to go whereever he was going that didn't bring him back till late that night.

A lot of fairly informed people watch only National News...thanks to the magic of cable TV...

What I remember reading was that is was not out of the ordinary. "...said it didn't really strike her at first because there often are children's bikes or toys left about in the neighborhood."

Right, which is why he didn't think it was important to deal with it right away.

My observations and opinion about the cross:

(I apologize if this has already been suggested as I haven't had a chance to read all the previous posts on the subject)

The cross is not very well executed, in terms of the carving. One arm is longer than the other, and one arm curves a bit more than the other. The cross is typically very symmetrical and all right angles. Even in folk culture handi-crafts, people that make these type of objects do it with a much higher level of precision, given the fact that they do it for so many hours of the day.
I believe the cross may have been made by the perp, or acquired by the perp in one of two places, prison or some kind of religious summer camp. It reminds me of something a person in jail would make, as many inmates find god in jail and are encouraged to participate in bible study and meetings of a religious nature. The other possibility is that the perp made this at some point in his/her life in a church camp type setting, where arts and crafts of a religious nature are often one of the activities available for attendees to participate.

I am not going to speculate about the reasons this was left by the perp at this point, although I do have some ideas.
However, I think there is a good chance that the markings were made by the perp, and hopefully they aren't some sick tally of his previous murders, although that would be something straight out of a thriller novel.

Someone mentioned in the comments at the bottom of this link

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/new...ica-ridgeways-killer-need-help-identifying-it

that the cross looks like something called an Olive wood holding cross. I googled and it does resemble these crosses.

Description:
This is a beautiful hand carved olive wood cross. It is deliberately uneven, in order to fit into your hand more comfortably than a “correctly shaped” cross would do.

It will develop its own natural patina as it is held and handled over time. Hold it and take comfort from it. It is the perfect companion for your prayers and meditation. It has been said that sometimes it is enough simply to hold the cross silently – this is itself prayer. If you or someone you know is ill simply holding the cross may be the best way to pray.

Sorry so long for my first real post :blushing:

People keep saying that the meaning of the marks on the cross (if there is a meaning) is unimportant, but I think that understanding what, if anything, the cross means will help determine where it might be sold, and who would be likely to buy it.

People keep saying that because Wesminster PD specifically said they didn't need tips on it. They are probably getting deluged with a lot of the same wild/random theories we see here, which can potentially make it harder for them to sift through more important tips.

And some people don't want to be informed. My sister-in-law became so depressed reading/watching news she had to stop.

I've been lurking here for a week and finally got registered last night.

I grew up in the neighborhood where JRs school was located, one block over from the school in fact. Granted this was 30 so years ago but we used to run the streets until almost dark then play in one or the others backyards til late- we walked to the community center to play and to the school in the summer- i didnt go to Witt but all of my friends did (I went to private school) these are some of my fondest childhood memories in fact. Knowing this little girl was taken from my former neighborhood has really upset me more than any other case I've seen in a long time. I keep having visual flashbacks of familiar places with each news posting- but now they're tainted.

I'm hoping they find who did this soooon!!!

"It was out of place, so that we noted it, but not out of place enough that we got out and took a look at it," he said Monday, noting that kids in the suburban Rock Creek neighborhood sometimes leave out bikes.

Also mentioned it wasn't his families. So most likely not elderly.

I personally do not feel her book bag was placed there on purpose.I feel it was a mistake of her killers of some kind or Jessica left it there herself.I have a question please. It says the book bag was standing upright like someone placed it there. How does a book bag stand upright.I know my kids book bags do not do that.Maybe it would if clothes were in it?

One of the local news stations had a video shot of him. I'd guess 50ish. He did not want to be interviewed and who can blame him.

I am questioning that report about it standing upright. Did that come from the people who found it or saw it on scene, or was it from news media (who, after all, also said it was in a paper bag)?

The guy was quoted as saying it was just stood up on the sidewalk, not like thrown out of a car. You could see it was just placed there.

Not saying what he did was unreasonable at all. Just stating that someone really has to not want to know what's going on in the world to completely miss all news/radio broadcasts for a full 12 hours and then miss it for another 6 when he left his house.

An example a 12 year old just walked out of school a few weeks ago. It was on the midday new's, it was on facebook, they were talking about it on local AM radio, they had news announcments on local FM radio. If you were in range of a TV, computer or radio people in our town new about it.

Emphasis mine: I don't think that's a fair assumption.

I don't have a television or a radio, and I hate Facebook. I get my news from NPR's Marketplace podcasts, the New York Times, and The Economist magazine. I'm better informed than most people about current affairs, but if there were an Amber Alert in my town, the most likely place I'd hear about it would be Websleuths--if I checked that day, which I might not.

This forum is not representative of the world at large, and not everyone keeps the TV on constantly. Of course it would be preferable if everyone heard Amber Alerts the minute they went out, but I'm not surprised at all that this man might not have.

Cross-posted with several who had similar thoughts--sorry.

Finding the or reporting the backpack earlier wouldn't have made *that* much difference. She was almost certainly dead by the time it was placed. (Yes, I believe it was placed, and I believe the killer also wanted her body found.)

Sorry. But, its difficult to see inaccurate info posted, and scroll on by. I expect someone to correct me when I'm mistaken. MOOOOOOO

It wasn't directed at you...I just get frustrated when every few days it seems we recycle and rehash issues that have been resolved and/or aren't relevant to the case. I understand that there hasn't been much new information to discuss, but there has to be a more productive use of our time.

JMO :)
