I was thinking about AS's age and had a few thoughts:
Many SK's are thought to have started at a young age and continued for decades before being caught. These other SK's operated in a time without DNA identification; cell phone and internet records; and increased communications methods. Maybe youthful SK's are not becoming more common - we just have the means to identify them earlier before they become experienced and better at concealing their crimes.

I think it would be extremely unlikely he never practiced dismemberment on an animal. He likely did. Seems like he is a cat person as he had many cats.

I imagine all the neighbors are thinking back into missing pets. Indeed I would not be surprised if he started w pets when he was 10-11 years old.

yes, it's unfortunately probable.

I am really beginning to think he had an accomplice and his confession is not what really happened. I think kids still need to be really careful. all over Colorado.

so yes, there was animal abuse first:
:banghead:
"Last summer, their cat Chewie disappeared. They later found him cut in half along the footpath that runs behind their house. There's no telling what happened to the beloved family pet, but it's the type of incident that leapt to mind when they heard Jessica had been dismembered.

Bechtel told police about it."

We may never know for sure but I think AS is the likely culprit, which wiuld bear out what we all suspected when trying to profile AS both before and after his aprehension.

I also think that time of death being Sunday night/early Monday morning is quite probable given the condition of the remains, which no one knows for sure, but some have said appeared that they hadn't been sitting out for days.
I personally hate discussing what condition the remains were in, but b/c it may be true that she was alive til Sunday night, I swear I saw the torso with at least one leg. I also thought I saw an arm lying across the torso. The remains did look flesh color, as if they has not been deceased for long. I may not have seen anything, but in those channel 9 heli pix, I did think I saw that.
This would mean she was alive all weekend. which is a horror. But given who AS seems to be, I think that was the whole point. not strangling her immediately. I think the torture and abuse was the whole point. sadly.

where was AS for that whole weekend? did his mom know where he was? were anyone else's kids either with AS that weekend or away for the weekend?

I 100% agree regarding the remains.

uh, no, that'd be Seattle. As far as the sun disappearing....Colorado has 300 days of sun, I'm told.

Indeed it does and as an example, we've had light snow and day temps in the 30's for a few days, but it will be in the mid to upper 60's this coming week. Hence the saying that if you don't like the weather in Colorado, stick around for 30 minutes because it will change.

On that note, I can't keep up with all the posts so I don't know if the discussion evolved further on the secondary crime scene and speculation that she might have been dismembered in the open space where she was found, but it was snowy and cold that night and I cannot imagine that her killer would engage in that kind of time intensive activity in the cold and dark.

I also don't think the remains that were found in that space were there all along. I think he kept them for a time. And I think he enjoys admiring his trophies.

Has LE ever indicated that they are seeking an accomplice?

I don't see there being one, personally. If so, I think that some of the people who are talking about him now would be saying "he was always with so-and-so, etc."

Certain sarcasm detectors are not operational this morning, I'm afraid.

I've always thought he used a means to preserve the remains. If that's true, and the media has reported that the remains in the crawl space were in a cooler, then it makes sense that he may have kept all remains in that manner and then at a later date left what was recovered in the open space. I've thought from the time that they found her torso that it had not been there long and that he was hoarding other remains.

I suppose I meant ... dismembered ... when I said "murdered". I think that Jessica walked to the place where she was dismembered, and I don't think it happened in the car.

After that, she was transported. Perhaps some of her remains were taken to the open space, but what if this happened at his father's property (especially if he was away on Oct. 5), and other remains were taken to his mother's crawl space?

It is not surprising that Austin claims that Jessica was hog tied and that she was strangled in the car. It is the best explanation that he can give in order to minimalize his participation in her abduction and murder. As it stands, he appears to claim that he abducted her, hog tied her in the car and then strangled her in the car ... and then what ... he panicked and had to get rid of the body ... so he dismembered her and left her in the open space and his mother's crawl space? That's absurd.

It is the most farfetched story we could ever be fed by a 🤬🤬🤬🤬 addict that abducted, murdered and dismembered a 10 year old child. He is attempting to minimize his responsibility for what he did.

I think the crawl space is a possibility, but that could also be where he keeps his "treasures".

IIRC, his girlfriend said something about his "man-cave," early on in a link in this WS board -- could this be the crawlspace, or could it be another room in their house? It sounded like it was at his house anyway; maybe it was some other special place he claimed as his -- at his dad's house? Empty building? Imagination?

Does anyone know if this "mancave" actually existed? Details?? Or was it just another AS brag, etc.??

Just his bedroom... where he had his knives/swords is all she meant.

I don't know if this article has been posted but it discusses how police strategy and release of information may have contributed to the call from the mother of AS.

Notably, it also mentions a neighbor who lives across the street from the Sigg family and his report to police about finding his missing cat cut in half last summer.

http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_21871553/police-strategy-may-have-spurred-mom-suspect-austin

I have a hard time understanding HOW someone didnt see more evidence or clues to Sigg's personality, actions...As bizarre and dark are his "hobbies"...Where did he go to do this brutality? His home? If so, how could his mother not pick up on strange stuff? His dad's been in/out of the prison system, so what a great role model he is... You gotta wonder how much this kid has done over the years...

Hate to sound preachy, but I grew up in the 60's, 70s, we didnt have hi tech, cable, all the stuff kids have today...we did volunteer work, worked jobs, cut lawns, sports, did things as a family...Our parents were great role models..The youths of today, with their pants hanging down to their knees is ridiculous and shows a small sign of the "disrespectful attitude" these kids have today. So many of these kids have no direction, or course of life to build their self esteem, people skills, maturity building...

This murder just blows my mind..especially with many of my friends who have children as young as Jessica..

Lol... I grew up same time as you. I remember all the older folk saying the same exact things about us youngsters then that you are saying now - don't you remember hearing " these kids with their ripped jeans and long stringy hair have no respect, they listen to disgusting music, they do drugs... Etc etc...." Every generation thinks the younger generation is disrepsectful. It never changes...

Spamelope, yw.. I was curious about the silence in that investigation and the 'Jack the Ripper' comment also. Was this the reason for the tremendous amount of resources utilized in Jessica Ridgeway's abduction investigation?

So many ironies in this case, imo. Prolly the most ironicic of all is that Colorado is one of only 6 US states that has refused passing Jessica's Law..

Don't like to make predictions, but Colorado State Legislators will be running over themselves to be the first to introduce a Jessica's Law Bill in the next Legislature session(and maybe before/special session).
Personally, I would like to see the names of those Legislators who voted it down posted on the front page of all Colorado Newspapers and be the Lead story on MS Media; TV, etc.

http://www.billoreilly.com/jessicaslaw
(snipped-read more)(Map of states that have refused to pass Jessica's Law at link)

Many states don't protect children from sexual predators and allow these criminals back on the street to commit these crimes again. There have been despicable cases all across America in which girls and boys have been raped, abused, and even murdered - often by serial sex offenders who had been released by authorities after serving short prison sentences.

Here are just a few of the more egregious examples:
In Rhode Island, 18-year-old Josh Maciorski was convicted of having sex with a 13-year-old girl, but sentenced to probation. Two years later he molested a 14-year-old girl and served just one year. Then, when he got out, Maciorski raped a 16-year-old girl. His sentence after this third strike - an unbelievable three years in prison.

In Missouri, 19-year old Darrell Jackson pleaded guilty to repeatedly sexually abusing a little girl, beginning when she was just eight. But when Jackson came up for sentencing, a soft judge gave him four months in prison and five years probation.

In Minnesota, Joseph Duncan stood in front of a judge, accused of molesting a young boy. Despite the fact that Duncan had previously served 16 years for raping another young boy at gunpoint, the judge released him on just $15,000 bail. Duncan promptly skipped bail and headed for Idaho, where he allegedly kidnapped, raped, and killed a 9-year old boy, molested his sister, and killed their family.

These outrageous crimes could have been prevented, which is why I am calling on every state in the union to pass a version of "Jessica's Law." The legislation is named after little Jessica Lunsford, who was just nine when her life was brutally ended by a sexual predator who had previously been convicted of sex crimes against a child. The crime forced Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida legislature to mandate stiff minimum sentences for child abusers, who had all too often been slapped on the wrist by lenient judges.

There is simply no question that Jessica's Law will save lives, and similar laws need to be instituted in every state. Which is why we at The Factor have been putting pressure on Governors. Now it's your turn. We have investigated all 50 states to determine which ones are tough on sexual predators and which ones treat these criminals with kid gloves. You can find out where your state ranks elsewhere on this web site. If your state is soft or noncommittal, I urge you to write your Governor, who is paid by YOU. Please tell him or her, in your own words, how important this issue is to you - and remind the Governor that all politicians are ultimately accountable to you and your fellow voters.

This is literally a life-and-death battle to save our youngest and most vulnerable citizens from abuse, torture, and murder. I hope you'll do your part.

Surprised? I have read what a bunch of old men l lawmakers have said about rape.

Thanks, and IIRC the friend, AC I think his initials were, stated that AS knife collection, at the time they were hanging out, consisted of mosly some dull swords.

While discussing the knife collection, I wanted to answer a poster who questioned a while back "what is the fascination with teen boys and knife collections lately" (paraphrased)

This IME is not a new thing. My brother as a teen had a collection of knifes, ninja stars and nunjucks (in the 80s).

My now adult son also collected knives and daggers. My teen nephews do the same.

I think for young males it is something of a coming of age thing. Being old enough to now be entrusted with the responsibility of owning a dangerous weapon/tool. I don't find this a new phenomenon it is rather common and typical IME. Unfortunately, AS is far from typical teen. :(

Anyway, thanks, your post brought to mind the other posters question and my thoughts about it.

There also were not shows on t.v. with open sexual scenes, violence, and swearing. T.V. could be censored but unfortunately something happened along the way. I still am shocked by what I see and hear on television. And of course you can't censor cyberspace. I wonder which came first, the loss of morals, or the advertising/displaying of no morals. jmo

I joined WS to learn about this case. The whole thing has made me rather depressed :( I don't know how you all manage to follow case after case. I enjoy the diverse theories and suggestions from all of the members though.

Akweks, welcome to websleuths...
Imo, one common denominator of the majority of the websleuths' team/family/members, is that we were brought here due to tragedy that touched us. Although many of the cases of the Silent Epidemic of missing/murdered persons end in tragedy. Occasionally there will be some that have a happy ending.. Guess that is what keeps the old timers going and the newcomers coming...
