I wonder if HLN will air the trial? Are cameras allowed in the courtroom in Colorado? I would think a local station would have a live feed on their website, at least.

Cameras haven't been allowed in so far. Just the sketch artists for this and for James Holmes' appearances.

We're still at the pretrial phase of both cases, so would it change when the case actually goes to trial? I found some articles about James Holmes' case where it said the judge was going to allow cameras for certain motions. So maybe it's up to the judge?

A bit confused here. An August 5 document says the trial is expected to start September 20 and end October 11. However, apparently a witness for the defense is out of the country until October 13. The defense also claims that they still haven't received 5000-10000 pages of information. So it sounds like they want the trial delayed....but they say at the end they want to "continue the currently scheduled jury trial in the above captioned manner for only two weeks"? What does that mean?

When a party asks for a trial to be "continued" or ask for a "continuance", they are asking for the trial to be delayed. In this case, they are asking the court to move the trial back about 2 weeks so that their expert witness will be available to testify. I expect the court will grant that motion.

As for the discovery, it doesnt appear that the state has refused to turn over documents, but that the state has turned over so MUCH documentation, evidence, and computer files that the defense is having a hard time getting through it all.

This made me ill today. He was searching websites specializing in violent child 🤬🤬🤬🤬. I can't believe those aren't heavily monitored by LE somehow.

Defense attorneys call the evidence inflammatory, but prosecutors say the search terms and alleged visits to the sites show Sigg's thought process.
"The defendant's graphic search terms are not admissions. They are not statements," defense attorney Katherine Spengler said.

Hmmppfff!

Okay, okay -- they may not be admissions or statements but they are e.v.i.d.e.n.c.e IMHO.

If he had been searching for ways to apologize to her family and his, or looking for ways to write a confession, the defense attorney might have called it redeeming or possibly exculpatory.... I call &^))$#!+. MOO.

Grrrrrr.

Absolutely evidence IMO. Indicates motive and premeditation.

Austin Sigg's attorneys ask for change of venue
Austin Sigg, who is charged with kidnapping, killing and dismembering 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, appeared in court Thursday morning where attorneys presented arguments for some key motions in the case.

A number of motions are pending in the case against Sigg, including a request by defense attorneys to move the trial to a different jurisdiction. Defense attorneys also filed — under seal — a second motion to postpone the jury trial, according to a register of action for the case.

On Thursday defense attorneys present a survey of potential jurors. In Jefferson County, the survey company reported, 19 percent of those polled associated Sigg with the case. In other metro counties, that number was 16 percent; outside the metro area it was 14 percent.

Among those polled, 303 were from Jefferson County and 19 percent of them could identify Sigg as the person arrested for the killing of Jessica.

Only 19%? I'm very surprised by that number. It seems very low to me, so why is the defense still arguing for a change of venue?

He added that 13 percent of people can name both Colorado senators, a number similar to those who can identify Sigg.

Um, how does this help their cause? That number is very low too.

Defense lawyers asking for a change of venue for the trial of Austin Sigg, who is charged with kidnapping, killing and dismembering 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, will have to try to seat a jury before the judge in the case will rule on their request.

Munsinger also denied a motion to postpone the trial. Opening arguments in the case are scheduled for Oct. 3.

All this maneuvering is just making him look worse, anyway. Her remains were found IN HIS HOUSE.

More information:

Munsinger's decision came after a long testimony from Paul Talmey with Talmey-Drake Research and Strategy Inc. who conducted a survey of potential jurors. Talmey and a team of trained interviewers conducted 707 phone interviews throughout Colorado, with 303 of them done in Jefferson County, 203 of them done in the metro are and 201 of them done outside of the metro area.

Wouldn't the fact that it was a phone interview affect the sample? There are lots of households that don't have a landline. Also, what time did they call? If it was during the day, you're going to get the stay-at-home dads and moms. Maybe that was their intention? Like someone who is home during the day is more likely to be familiar with the case?

Those surveyed were asked over 20 questions, beginning with screener questions followed by questions regarding the abduction and murder of Jessica Ridgeway and the Sigg case.

So it looks like they tried everything they could to make the interviewee say they knew who Austin Sigg was, yet in Jefferson County, only 20% recognized his name. I would love to know exactly what questions they asked. There's a difference between saying, "Are you aware of Jessica Ridgeway?" and "Are you aware of Jessica Ridgeway, a 10-year-old girl who was murdered last year?"

Talmey said according to his findings, those interviewed in Jefferson County had a “very high awareness of the crime” and that the crime “rang a bell with people.” He said the recognition of the crime from people surveyed was much higher in Jefferson County than it was outside the county.

Just because you are aware of a case doesn't mean you can't serve on the jury. I just don't see how the defense can argue that Sigg should get a change of venue when 80% of county residents don't recognize his name.

People in the pool of jurors started to fill out a questionnaire that will be reviewed by defense attorneys and prosecutors over the weekend. On Tuesday, attorneys in Jefferson County court will begin questioning potential jurors and selecting who will serve on the jury in the murder trial.

Defense lawyers have asked for a change of venue for Sigg's trial, arguing it is impossible for Sigg to get a fair trial in Jefferson County due to extensive media coverage. The defense will have to attempt to seat a jury before the judge will rule on the change-of-venue motion.

This new info is so hard to look at. What he put her through and what sick things are in his mind. Scary that his defense team is working so hard to get him less time. This monster could return to do it again.

Why did no one check this computer? After all, they knew he was treated for 🤬🤬🤬🤬 addiction. I guess in the parents mind, 🤬🤬🤬🤬=pleasure but in the monsters mind, 🤬🤬🤬🤬=unspeakable horror. He looked at things that should never be seen.

This case is hard to archive. Actually they all are.

The Case Archive is updated.

Ted Bundy started looking at whatever type of 🤬🤬🤬🤬 was out there when he was young, too. All he had was magazines. Then he started peeping. Then he started raping & killing... He also would drink alcohol which, he said, made him bolder. I don't believe a lot of what he said, but those items I do believe. And it took years & lots of sharp LE personnel to stop him.

I really see a parallel here, as several of us have previously agreed. No doubt in my mind. Folks need to be careful of & with Sigg, IMO.

I wonder if cameras will be allowed in the courtroom for the trial. It looks like that decision is up to each individual judge in the state of Colorado. The judge denied having cameras in the courtroom for the pre-trial hearings, but I wonder if the media will make the request again for the actual trial.

When will people have the right to rise up about these child killers? Why all these restrictions on what can be used, said, brought before a jury? I am so tired (along with everyone else) of all this carp! Unless a person is legally completely mentally retarded they know what crimes are, and what can happen. Now Sigg wants to be saved! For What? so he can get out and do it again? HE SHOULD HAVE NO RIGHTS!! I am totally fed up. If parents began to go after those scum that killed or hurt their children, I'd contribute to their cause. Jessica was a beautiful child on her way to school for Gods sake. When will law makers wake up? when the scum starts killing theirs? I'm so sorry I blew. I just want to see real justice not molly coddling and I know many many agree. Lock him up and throw away the da* key. It's too bad he cant die! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It's for our children. They are everything!!! :seeya:
