Did officials make the clothes comment before or after the backpack was found? If after, I would wonder if clothing was found in the backpack prompting them to assume she'd changed into something else?

Sadly, I believe the clothing was in the backpack. I don't think she changed clothing. Given the wording of that article, it makes me (MOO) believe that her clothing was found in the backpack...possibly even with evidence that a crime was committed.

That is why I think they were very adamant to NOT FOCUS ON CLOTHING in an attempt to find her.

For some reason we dont hear about as many children going missing in other countries. Oh it happens but i do not think is on as grand scale as it is here in the good old usa. Its like open season on our children here every day we add a few more names to our lists here at websleuths and these are only the ones we hear about! Sad and something has to be done to stop it! Where does it end?

I agree. Stranger abductions of children are very rare in Australia. It doesn't stop us being afraid though. Most of the children abducted here seem to be taken by parents.

I always wonder if these cases seem more prevalent to us crime followers, because we are always following them, so we get them in very concentrated doses.

Also, I wonder if they are/seem more common in the US, because of the size of the population compared to other countries.....*shrug*

IMO the population size has to be the reason

Good morming, I have been reading some on this case since yesterday. I know some of you have been here since the day Jessica disappeared. I was up early this morning watching GMA. This is what was on. This doesn't really make it a particularly good morning though. I never will understand the sick people that live in this world. Hope whoever did this is found and punished soon.

Imo, the FBI info released in the article does not come close to resembling a psychological profile of the suspect in Jessica Ridgeway kidnapping.

Actually, it pretty much sums up the members of websleuths, as well as the millions of empathetic/caring folks across the US and beyond whose daily lives have been forever altered. We are all heartbroken by this tragic abduction/murder of Jessica Ridgeway.
How can our normal behaviors and routines not be changed?..

It really is very very scary that children are preyed upon as a hunter would with wildlife.
The punishment needs to be swift and ending. But no it goes on and on and on and on and the killer is protected and leads a pretty secure life in jail. Where is the justice in that I ask???

Just curious does anyone know of cases of child abductions where the victim's body is damaged like this? I can think of some where the victim was an adult.

In addition to Adam Walsh, who has already been mentioned, there was Leiby Kletzky. (By the way, it was concerned citizens who led to the discovery of his killer.) Also, Aliahna Maroney was dismembered (though not exactly abducted, since her family knew she was at the perp's house prior to her murder.) In both of those cases, the dismemberment may have been soley to hide the body (in both cases some of the body parts were stored in the freezer). Zahra Baker was dismembered (though not abducted), presumably in an attempt to hide evidence. JMO

I think they need to take cadaver dogs and search every home in their neighborhood.
this person dimembered her and it was probably in his own home!
They need to enter these home not just knock on doors and if someone declines get a warrant.

Remember jessica Lundsford she was right next door!

So here is what i think...very gruesome, but makes sense to me. The perp killed Jessica, and took her clothes, glasses, and anything else on her body that would help identify her, placed all in the backpack and discarded to get rid of any identifying evidence. I think he then disposed of head (so face and teeth can not be seen to identify), hands and feet also to get rid of identifying purposes. Makes me sick, but this is what I think happened.

This leads me to my other question....what led them to that spot with the body? I don't think they just happened upon it, they were given a clue or the perp messed up, as indicated in the comments on the newspaper site.

It was reported yesterday that the body was discovered by workers picking up trash along Leyden Road. Probably the guys wearing the light green safety vests in this photo.

They are actually very rare in the US, too. As someone said earlier, maybe it is our huge population that makes it seem more common. (Sadly, there are some countries where children go missing and there is no searching and police investigation and media coverage.)

attempts are not rare, a lot go unreported. Back in the mid 1970s my sister and I were followed by a car when we were walking home from school, my mother didn't believe us even though we were shaking like leaves. Friends have related similar experiences and grab attempts that happened to them as kids too.

They used dogs in that area on Wednesday, the day the body was discovered. I didn't see any dogs being used during the Thursday searches.

I'm speechless. Totally plausible yet frightening to think that it could be someone who blends in so well...

Cases like this and Zahra and Shaniya and Jhessye and Tina Hermann/Cody Maynard/Stephanie Sprang, and the Powell kids, and so many others is why I have to take breaks from WS every now and then.

The Jessica Ridgeway investigation has broadened to include Standley Lake in Westminster and the neighborhoods surrounding Pattridge Open Space Park in Arvada where a body was found.

And to think my daughter walks her little dog out there. I am always, always warning her to BE AWARE. Even though there are always many people out and about, now this.

Same here in South West Florida!

We pull up in a line we show id (DL) they copy number take childs name they have a walkie talkie and say the childs name as we pull up my child is there a teacher opens the car door and say is that your mom or dad or whomever and he says yea and off we go. It takes some time to get thru the line but a well worth wait!

At our daughter's school they have name tags for everyone but the kids that walk home by themselves. I walk to pick up my daughter and have to hold a name tag to get her. If I do not have a name tag then I need to use my ID to get a temp name tag to get her. There are certain things about the name tags so you can not just print one off the computer ( will not say what but you also can not alter the tag at all). I have seen many just print off the computer only to be told to go to the office b/c it was not their name tag. Can take 30 minutes to get her at times but rather that then how they let them out at the beginning of last yr. Kids from pre K to 5th were let out the front door to wait for parents and walk home. The PreK and K had a teacher with them but with all the parents and kids it was a huge cluster ___. My kindergartner being so small would get lost even behind the kids in her class heck even some of the pre k kids lol. Kids who walk home without a parent are let out at the same time in 3 different groups. They are walked to the corners (minus the driveway) walked across the street and are watched as far as they can be seen.

Her clothes were found in the bag.
She was walking to her bus stop alone.
