Totally gutted.

I think we all knew what they were going to say, but it didn't make it any easier to hear.

My heart is breaking for that family, and for a young life so horrifically stolen.

I understand they have to say " safety messages" etc for your kids. They cannot come right out and tell the blunt truth or they are afraid of panic. But...There is no way I would go over stranger danger and allow my child to walk right now, there is a violent nut job predator out there. I would find a carpool with other parents if need be, if i could not drive my child myself. I fear this person will strike again soon. IMHO

Continued prayers for Jessica's mom and dad, extended family, and her friends. Also for the LE working on this case and all the others who are involved one way or another. I pray that they will be given the wisdom and knowledge they need to find justice for Jessica.

I'm certain they used DNA to identify so her parents wouldn't have to see her and remember her like this. It doesnt mean her teeth and hands or anything else was gone.

I wish I could be as optimistic. Sadly I think it was quite the opposite. Very very much the opposite.

I cannot express the sorrow I feel about this tragedy.

All I can say is it is going to take a lot more than just watching our children more closely, to put an end to these sick crimes.
I know it isn't possible to completely rid our society of these individuals, but I am going to spend some time thinking about the more subtle ways to bring about change.

It's so incredibly hard to hear this and know there is a monster in my community. Our LE and our community will not stand for this and the suspect will be caught.

Just wanted to add that I think the dog searches both going toward schools is curious. That there are two schools, it worries me this might be someone who delivers things in the school district? I believe these are both JeffCo schools.

Can someone clarify this: Is it indeed the case that the K9s traced a scent to a school, then to her backpack, then back to a school? Or from a school, to her backpack, then back to a school?

Hello folks. I have followed your site in the past, on the Kyron Horman case and now on the Jessica Ridgeway case. I'm in Colorado and my son is just a little older than Jessica and attends a Jeffco school. This is my community. I'm sure everyone is reeling from the horrible news we just heard. Materasso also said Witt Elementary School - which is where Jessica attended - will be on lockout as the investigation continues. Police requested the lockout because of police activity around the school. What this means for parents is they can come and pick up their kids if they show identification, and kids cannot play outside during recess.

The two I'm recalling are:

1) In her neighborhood, the dogs went from - the park? - to her school and then back out somewhere in the neighborhood.

2) By the backpack, they went toward a school.

For every parent who is scared and feeling paranoid remember:

- These are crimes of opportunity.
- Do not allow your children to walk somewhere without an adult escort. This is when children are most at risk.
- Do not allow your children to go off on bike rides where they are out of sight.
- Take reasonable precautions (lock your doors & windows)
- Teach kids to run away from anyone asking for help to find a "lost puppy," "lost kitten," or anyone who wants directions.
- Teach your kids to never approach anyone in a car who stops, unless they already know that person.
- Don't live your life scared and paranoid and don't put that burden on your kids. Safety, yes. Paranoia, no.
- If you are paranoid and feeling scared, purchase one of the GPS tracking devices and put it on your child, their backpack or on their wrist.

I'm generally not pro-death penalty but in this case, give me the damn needle and I'll do it myself. I don't care if he had an overbearing mother and wet the bed, or if the voices told him to do it-this piece of **** needs to die. And I hope it is a botched execution and he suffers till his dying breath. I am SO effing disgusted with humanity right now.
