@ShellyBradbury
Pankey indicated "intimate knowledge" of the crime, DA says, that wasn't known to the public.

Pankey went to church with the Matthews family around the time of the killing. He was arrested in Idaho without incident.

I missed this tweet, so it looks like he was a suspect a year before the body was found.

@ShellyBradbury
Pankey became a person of interest in this case in mid 2018, DA says.

Rourke said Pankey had “intimate knowledge of the crime” that wasn’t known to the public — specifically that a rake was used to wipe out footprints in the snow.

The affidavit alleges that Pankey took Jonelle from her home on Dec. 20, 1984, and shot her during the kidnapping. It also said he had been watching Jonelle and other children walk home from Franklin Middle School, and that he exhibited strange behavior over the years, including muttering “false prophet” in 1985 during a church service when the pastor announced that Jonelle Matthews would be found safe.

The indictment states that Pankey’s ex-wife, Angela Hicks, provided much of the information on his background, which may have led to the charges, including “dumping” the family dogs before they went on their Christmas trip in December 1984. The dogs “were never seen again,” she said.

Pankey inserted himself into the investigation and repeatedly claimed he had knowledge of the crime which ended up being inconsistent and incriminating, the document says.

Pankey argued in a 1999 pleading filed with the Idaho Supreme Court, if the court ruled in certain fashion, “it is reasonable for the appellant to believe he would get the death penalty for revealing the location of Jonelle Matthews’ body.”

Former candidate for governor says he's being eyed in 1984 Greeley disappearance
snipped

A copy of the search warrant posted on the Statesman website shows that investigators were looking for computer equipment – including floppy diskettes, hard drives, magnetic computer tapes -- as well as “any and all correspondence, diaries, memoirs, journals, personal reminiscences, electronic mail (e-mail), letters, notes, memorandum, or other communications in written or printed form, as these items pertain to allegations set forth in this affidavit, or that relate to the murder of Jonelle Matthews.”

The affidavit, the warrant and the return are all sealed, according to a court clerk.

Greeley police Cmdr. Roy Smith told 9NEWS that Pankey “has made repeated efforts to speak with detectives” about the Matthews case. But after detectives traveled to Twin Falls, Idaho, on Aug. 15, Pankey refused to answer questions, Smith said. Pankey did voluntarily submit a DNA sample, Smith said.

At that point, Smith said, Greeley detectives obtained a search warrant for Pankey’s home, executing it in Sept. 4 along with Twin Falls police and sheriff’s officers.

So I wonder if his DNA matched? I will have to go back and look at her old thread but I do seem to remember something about church and her disappearing? JMO

ETA - he can be sleuthed

SP keeps going on and on about being gay. IMO he is trying to say that since he is gay there is no way he would abduct and kill a preteen girl.
Replying again..... this alleged detail is definitely not going to help him at his new home......

Greeley Police Department

Greeley PD Facebook post 10/13/20
What a nice tribute to Jonelle and all those who worked hard to get all the evidence together.

For over three decades the disappearance of Jonelle Matthews has haunted our community. With the nation rallying behind us, citizens throughout Greeley offered assistance large and small. Donations poured in for the Matthews family, volunteers scoured the vast expanse of Weld County searching for Jonelle; churches rallied their congregations with prayer vigils. The populace united around the Matthews family; Jonelle became a daughter to us all.

During those decades, generations of Greeley police officers have never forgotten Jonelle, many living in torment over the possibilities of what may have occurred that grim evening in 1984, and what could be done to solve this mystery. In 2015 detectives began a renewed investigation into Jonelle’s disappearance. In the process additional officers, retired and newly minted, offered vital assistance.

On July 23, 2019, the human remains of Jonelle Matthews were uncovered in a desolate field southeast of Greeley. A forensic pathologist would determine she was the victim of homicide.

Early in the investigation, Steven Dana Pankey was identified as a person of interest. As the investigation progressed, evidence arose and Pankey was identified as a suspect. Working closely with the Weld County District Attorney’s Office the decision was made to present this evidence to the 2020-2021 Weld County Grand Jury beginning in September 2020.

On October 9, 2020, the grand jury issued their indictment of Steven Pankey for the kidnapping and murder of Jonelle Matthews. Subsequently, an extraditable warrant was issued by Weld County Chief Judge James Hartmann commanding the arrest of Pankey for charges including:

C.R.S. 18-3-102(1)(a): murder in the first degree–after deliberation
C.R.S. 18-3-102(1)(b): murder in the first degree-felony murder
C.R.S. 18-3-302(1)(4): second-degree kidnapping.

On October 12, 2020, Greeley Detectives Michael Prill and Robert Cash coordinated, and were present for, the arrest of Steven Pankey in Meridian, Idaho. His extradition to Weld County is expected in the near future.

Special gratitude is extended to the members of the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office, the Twin Falls Police Department, the Meridian Police Department, and the Ada County Sheriff’s Office. Their assistance has been immeasurable. Additionally, we would like to thank the members of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children {NCMEC} for their invaluable assistance.

Accompanying this release are images of Steven Pankey from December 1984 and his current booking photo.
