good question about library computers...probably could set up one those free e-mail accounts at least i would think...

does not sound like they have any footage of her leaving the mall, i guess, darn it...just that she was there...surely they know more than they are telling though, as far as who she was with or a description at least, i hope

The library is good cover up....I think that was her excuse to get out of the house to see someone.

i was going to say this...but then i am something of a cynic...:)

It changes things because if you want to runaway and not be found you don't run to the mall where there are people and security all over.

The library could be a cover up, it could also be where she was posting on her MS page from as well as chatting and meeting other people (possibly a man) online.

If she left to meet someone she likely would not have called in those first days, she would have left to get away and be with this person.

Are students allowed to check into homeless shelters without parents?

Where do kids go who run away at a young age?

  • #345
i think some types of shelters help runaways...and she does look older than she is...but i think they would notify police of any minors?

  • #346
I just contacted a local shelter, and they have to have ID, and nobody under the age of 18, unless it's a family shelter.

  • #347
We have a few shelters in the area for teens, but I believe it depends on the state.

After a quick search it appears that Urbanpeak has help out of Denver and Colorado
Springs for kids starting at 14 (easy enough to lie about your age though). However... I can't picture a shelter knowing that someone was there and not calling in to LE to say the person was safe, I would imagine there would be legal ramifications for not calling given the cost of the manpower.
I also don't think she "ran away" in the technical sense and sought out a shelter or is living on the street somewhere so I don't think the shelters are a factor here, but interesting to read up on services for traditional run aways.

ok so back to square one. either she. A. met up with someone prearranged and took off;
B. met with someone planning to be home by curfew and something happened
C. Met up with/taken by a stranger

are there any other scenarios?

2 Confirmed sightings of her outside the mall ... Looks like that was it :(
so it changes timeline of when she was last seen.
Investigators said they've received 300 leads in the case, some of which have led them to conclude that the girl was at the Greeley Mall at the time she was supposed to be at the party. Others have led them to California, where Kayleah's biological father lives, and to other states.

That statement doesn't sound like a lot to be sure about, but raises the question of whether she was at the mall instead of at the party.

I still don't get that she'd run away, but it reminds me of a runaway from my childhood. At ten years old he had every intention of getting away from an abusive family. He got to a relative's house ten miles away, in his bare feet. They drove him back, returning him to the family that evening to suffer more abuse. I hope she's hiding, but it's not like she can grow up under (or in) somebody's bed if there's a problem.

I hope the reward gets results, but I'm preparing for the worst, too.

i only brought up gift again as someone mentioned above that maybe that is why she went to the mall-so i wondered if a gift was ever clarified-i am feeling attacked about this gift-thing :(

Please don't feel bad, no one is attacking you. Typically kids' birthday parties = gifts.

to be honest, a gift never occurred to me until it was mentioned here! i don't have any kids and am not tuned into whether gifts are even cool anymore. but it was mentioned and debated and then i wondered if the police might have asked the mother about a gift and/or money to buy one and neither were ever confirmed as being with Kayleah, just so as to be on the look out for a possible wrapped item.

Greeley - 4/5/2010

At their press conference this afternoon Greeley police chief Jerry garner spoke directly to Kayleah saying that if she was listening to come home.

The FBI is now offering a $10,000.00 reward for information leading to Kayleah's whereabouts saying that somebody out there knows something.

These sightings at the mall change alot. Maybe she never intended going to the party. She could have been hanging out somewhere for hours before 'something' happened.
Obviously she wasn't with her regular friends.
I go back to the myspace guy age 18. Something hinky about that.

Somebody needs to call NG if they take questions abt Kayleah and ask about this guy.
