Man found guilty of Child Abuse Causing Death in Norwood case

"SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, Colo (KKCO/KJCT/AP) Ashford Nathaniel Archer, one of five people who was arrested in connection to the deaths of two girls found dead in a remote area near Norwood, Colorado in September of 2017 was found guilty after a jury trial this week.

According to the San Miguel Sheriff's Office, the guilty verdict came Thursday, after a nearly a three-week trial....

He was found guilty of 2 counts of Child Abuse, Knowingly/Recklessly Causing Death, which is a class 2 felony, and 1 count of Accessory to Crime, a class 4 felony...

Madani Ceus, the woman described by group members as a spiritual leader, faces murder charges along with Nashika Bramble, the girls' mother. Three other people, including Archer, faced other charges in the girls' deaths. In all 5 were arrested.

The sentencing of Ashford Nathaniel Archer is scheduled for June.

He could spend 16-48 years on each of the felony charges and up to six years for the others."

One of two women charged with murder in the deaths of two young sisters will not proceed to trial Monday, as was scheduled.

Madani Ceus has instead been ordered to the state hospital in Pueblo for a competency evaluation. All proceedings in her case are stayed until the evaluation is complete. If she is deemed legally incompetent, she could remain at the hospital until she is deemed restored to competency.

Blair pleaded guilty to being an accessory and is scheduled to be sentenced May 30.

Archer was convicted of two counts of child abuse resulting in death and of helping to conceal a crime. He maintains his innocence and his attorney said he will appeal. Sentencing is June 4 in Telluride.

Bramble, the mother of the two children, is also charged with first-degree murder and and child abuse resulting in death. Her trial begins July 8 in Telluride.

Eden was charged with fatal child abuse. She, too was the subject of a competency evaluation, which found she was not competent to proceed. Her case is stayed.

Ceus’s trial was scheduled to get underway in Montrose on Friday, but her public defenders filed a motion in the middle of the night late last week to vacate the trial so that she can be evaluated for mental competence. Seventh Judicial District Judge Keri Yoder granted the motion at a hearing in Telluride on Monday morning.

“It’s not unusual for cases of this nature to have a long time in between arrest and trial,” noted San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters. “Usually, the defendant has a right to a speedy trial, but it is not happening in this case, because the defendants are not demanding it.”

Two other cult members associated with the girls’ deaths have already undergone mental competency evaluations. The mother of the deceased girls, Nashika Bramble, was found to be competent and her trial is schedule to get underway in Montrose on July 8. Like Ceus, she faces two charges of first-degree murder and fatal child abuse. The case of defendant Ika Eden, meanwhile, was stayed indefinitely after a competency evaluation found that she was not competent to proceed with her trial.

Madani Ceus: There is no set timetable for when Ceus’s competency evaluation will take place. The court will receive an update at a status conference at noon on July 26 in Telluride.

Nashika Bramble: Motion hearings are scheduled for May 23-24 at 9 a.m. in Telluride, according to the docket. Bramble’s three-week trial begins July 8 in Montrose, with a pre-trial conference scheduled the week before that.
