Frederick Blair, one of five defendants in the deaths of two children, is to be sentenced Oct. 31.

Blair previously pleaded guilty to an accessory charge for having helped conceal the vehicle where sisters Hannah Marshall, 8, and Makayla Roberts, 10, died in 2017.

"TELLURIDE — A Colorado woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for killing her two daughters after she and other members of a doomsday religious group banished them to a car without food or water because the girls were thought to have been impure.

Nashika Bramble was sentenced to life in prison without parole Tuesday in the deaths of Makayla Roberts, 10, and Hannah Marshall, 8. She was convicted in July of two counts of first-degree murder....

Investigators say they believe the group’s spiritual leader, Madani Ceus of Haiti, declared that the two girls were possessed by unclean spirits during a past life and ordered them kept in a car without food or water for days as the others waited for the apocalypse before the 2017 solar eclipse.

Ceus has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse. She is set to go to trial in January.

The farm’s owner, Frederick “Alec” Blair, told investigators he met the group at a gas station outside Grand Junction and invited them to use his land. He soon joined them in living on the property in tents and cars, according to court documents.

5/6/19: Defense filed a motion to vacate the trial so that she can be evaluated for mental competence. Seventh Judicial District Judge Keri Yoder granted the motion at a hearing in Telluride on Monday morning. Ceus has instead been ordered to the state hospital in Pueblo for a competency evaluation. All proceedings in her case are stayed until the evaluation is complete. If she is deemed legally incompetent, she could remain at the hospital until she is deemed restored to competency. There is no set timetable for when Ceus’s competency evaluation will take place. The court will receive an update at a status conference at noon on July 26 in Telluride.

Blair, who uses his middle name, Alec, said prior to the sentence there is "no excuse or justification" for what happened to Makayla Roberts and Hannah Marshall, who were 10 and 8, respectively, when religious leader Madani Ceus allegedly banished them to a car on his property and decreed they could not be fed from her "increase" because she had deemed them impure.
