I'll be surprised if Ika Eden is declared competent at her next hearing. I have little sympathy for her even though I do believe she was manipulated by Ceus. Still, LE visited the property at one point and she could have spoken up, especially since it appears that at one time she was the primary caretaker for the girls and claims to have loved them.

Ah well, at least the worst culprits will get their just punishment. What a messed up case. I'll never understand doomsday cults.

Cult expert should have been allowed to testify specifically about Norwood group, appeal of murder conviction argues

Convicted child murderer Nashika Bramble was deprived of her constitutional right to a fair trial when the District Court excluded testimony of a renowned cult expert that was specific to her case — an error compounded by denying as “hearsay” the writings of a codefendant, according to a recent appeal, which seeks to have her convictions reversed.

Bramble is serving two life sentences after having been convicted last year of two counts of first-degree murder....

As an adult in a position of trust — their mother — Bramble had failed basic duties to the girls, yet acted quickly to save herself once Ceus turned on her, prosecutors said at trial.

But in the Aug. 13 appeal, Bramble’s attorney said testimony specific to how Bramble functioned within the group and the specific cult dynamics were critical to her being able to give a full defense and to having the jury understand her state of mind.

Instead, the trial court only allowed expert witness Janja Lalich, Ph.D., to testify about cult principles generally, and improperly excluded Lalich’s expert opinion and discussion of cults in specific relationship to Ceus’ group, the document argues.

At first, the court wasn’t going to let Lalich testify at all, but upon a motion to reconsider, allowed the limited “blind principle” testimony about cult dynamics. However, denying testimony specific to Bramble and the group robbed the jury of critical context and deprived Bramble of her rights to have a full, complete defense, thereby depriving Bramble of a fair trial. This court error contributed to the guilty verdict and as such, is not harmless, but requires reversal, the appeal argued.

Norwood child deaths suspect, once deemed incompetent, set for trial in June

If someone could give a 10% synopsis on this - it would be appreciated. Court site doesn't have anything updated yet on her.

Eden was among adults on the property to be charged with two counts of child abuse resulting in death; however, she was at first found legally incompetent to stand trial.

That changed Feb. 4, when Montrose District Judge Keri Yoder issued an order agreeing with prosecutors that Eden had been restored to legal competency.

Yoder also granted a prior defense motion for a venue change, finding that extensive media coverage of the case warranted moving the trial out of the 7th Judicial District.

Because other trials and proceedings in the case took place in the 7th Judicial District, the jury pool here was also effectively drained of those who could impartially hear the case. Yoder moved the trial to Mesa County, the population of which provides a larger pool of potential jurors.

Eden’s trial has been slated to begin June 14.

*Pretrial Readiness Conference Hearing (@ 3pm MT) - CO - Makayla Victoria Roberts (10) & Hannah Elizabeth Rosaline Marshall (8) (June, 2017, Norwood; found Sept. 8, 2017) – for *Ika Eden (53/now 56) (from Jamaica) charged with 2 counts felony child abuse causing death, bond $125K; plead not guilty. Found incompetent to stand trial; in State hospital in Pueblo.
Trial set to begin on 6/14/21 (6/14-6/18, 6/21-6/23 & 6/29/21). Trial moved from San Miguel County to Mesa County.

8/7/20 Update: Hearing was cancelled due COVID-19 to 9/24/20. 9/24/20 Update: Hearing continued to 11/19/20. 11/19/20 Update: Next Competency to Proceed hearing on 1/15/21. 1/15/21 Update: Hearing was rescheduled to 2/3/21.
5/25/21 Update: Eden found competent to stand trial. On Feb. 4 Montrose District Judge Keri Yoder issued an order agreeing with prosecutors that Eden had been restored to legal competency. Yoder also granted a prior defense motion for a venue change, finding that extensive media coverage of the case warranted moving the trial out of the 7th Judicial District. Because other trials & proceedings in the case took place in the 7th Judicial District, the jury pool here was also effectively drained of those who could impartially hear the case. Yoder moved the trial to Mesa County, the population of which provides a larger pool of potential jurors. Pretrial readiness conference hearing on 6/10 & Eden’s trial has been slated to begin 6/14 thru 6/29/21.
*Madani "Ama" Ceus – Child: Termination of parental rights hearing on 8/20 & 8/21/20. Sentenced for murder on 6/19/20 to 64 years in prison.

*Ashford Nathaniel Archer aka Nathan Yah aka Nathanyah Nitchitu (50) – found guilty & sentenced to 24 years in prison. 5/8/19: Appealing his guilty verdict. 1/29/20: The notice of appeal document from July is for now restricted to case parties; the opening for appeal 4/14/20. The appeal will be handled through the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.
*Nashika Leonie Bramble (36) – Jury verdict guilty of 2 counts of 1st degree murder. Sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison without parole. Bramble’s appeal brief had been due Thursday 2/27/20, but the Court of Appeals granted an extension until July 16. Until the appeal is filed, the specifics of what Bramble is contesting are not public.
*Frederick "Alec" A. Blair – Plead guilty. Sentenced to 12 years in prison.
