A Colorado mother was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after the death of her 2-month-old boy Miles Basello.

The baby’s father said she struggled with postpartum psychosis and went to the hospital multiple times to get help.

On Saturday, police went to a home in Boulder, Colorado, to do a welfare check on a woman in a mental health crisis.

Miles’ father said his family’s search for help began weeks ago when the baby’s mother, Anna Englund, threatened to hurt herself and the boy.

“I can’t comprehend like the medical base, backing for her acting that way. I can’t comprehend her internal thought process,” he said.

“It’s weird that you can form a life with somebody and this happens, and it’s like ‘What?’ You wouldn’t think that was that person,” he said.

After hours of searching, police said they found Englund in the parking lot of Boulder Community Hospital.

Officers rushed Miles to the emergency room, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The boy’s father said Englund visited that same hospital twice in the past few weeks trying to get help during postpartum.

“It’s something I don’t think anybody should have to experience in their life, you know?” Miles’ father said.

Police have not said how Miles died, but the coroner’s officer will determine the cause of death.

This breaks my heart. She knew. She knew she was a danger and tried to get help. Several times.

Yes, she knew, and she asked for help -- apparently didn't receive enough help or the right help.

I'm confident that at least a few people inside that hospital building feel awful....

I was experiencing difficulty sleeping after one of my babies was born, and had a history of postpartum depression. I went to my normal provider, but saw an NP. She told me, after I explained my extreme fatigue, "Well, I guess if you fall asleep driving one day and run off the road, you know you have a real problem." Had to see a different provider to get help. It was absolutely ridiculous, and at the time, I was too young and timid to say anything to her.

Wow. I hope she learned… that is so inappropriate to say the least.

Police were called to a north Boulder home around 4:30 p.m. Saturday to check on the welfare of Englund, who police said was possibly having a mental health crisis.

Witnesses reported that Englund had taken her two-month-old boy from her home and driven away in her car.

After police sent out a statewide alert, she was located around 10:20 p.m. driving toward Boulder Community Hospital, where she was met by police and her infant rushed to the emergency department.

The boy was pronounced deceased at 10:48 p.m., according to police.

I'm very sad to see this happen time and time again. We NEED more intensive support for women facing postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis.

Heartbreaking. We do have treatment for psychosis, and it often works well but it’s devastating when the treatment is not offere/accepted at the right time.

Heart goes out to Dad - and Mum - when she is treated and has to face what she has do e. So sad that sometimes people have to end up here - and an innocent life lost - to get treatment. Poor Dad without his baby or his wife now. Hope he has strong family support wrapped around him.

A 29-year-old Boulder woman jailed in the strangulation killing of her 2-month-old son has been charged formally with two counts of first-degree murder, Boulder court officials confirmed Thursday morning.

A preliminary hearing in the case against Anna Englund in Boulder District Court has been set for Sept. 8.

On Thursday, Englund was in jail, a court official said, declining to provide information on whether she has received mental health treatment.
[.....]
Englund told police she took her son away from their home at 902 Portland Place in Boulder while the baby’s father was in the bathroom on Saturday and that she strangled the baby “because I didn’t want him to suffer in life like I have,” the affidavit says. She told police “she was worried about all of the things that could happen” to him “because the world was ‘crazy’.”
[.....]
She told police she’d taken the infant in the car and parked in front of a house where she strangled the boy and then drove to a place she believed to be in Denver where she tried to kill herself by looking for a building she could jump off and trying to hang herself, the affidavit says. At the time of her arrest, it says, police saw cuts on the side of her face that she said were the result of an attempt to kill herself.

Here's another article describing the 2 counts of 1st degree murder she was charged with.

.....
Anna Englund, 29, was formally charged Thursday with first-degree murder after deliberation and first-degree murder of a child below the age of 12 by someone in a position of trust.

Englund made her second appearance in court Thursday, where Boulder District Judge Patrick Butler set a preliminary hearing date for Sept. 8.

Englund is to be held in Boulder County Jail without bond, as she is charged with Class 1 felonies.

Oh this is heartbreaking. Postpartum is such a difficult time, more so for some moms than others, but it makes me so sad that she knew it was bad and no one would help her!!!
