The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking for 64-year-old Rodney Guilinger, who traveled to Conejos County Wednesday to do some scoping. According to Guilinger's granddaughter, Alexis, he went camping for one night on his way home from Alamosa, but never returned.

What is scoping? Scoping as in “looking out for something” such as wildlife?

If he is a recreational hunter scoping may refer to examining and analyzing potential hunting locations to determine their suitability for a successful hunt in the future.

This sounds strange if he was diagnosed with cognitive impairment.

The trouble with cognitive impairment is the person often doesn't realize they are impaired, and will set off to do something they did with ease in the past, then things go awry. He may have told his granddaughter that was what he planned, and in his mind he did, then when he got out where it was remote, he was incapable of mentally doing what he wanted to do, further increasing his confusion.
