This was an excellent analysis Tortoise.
I would add this quote from CW’s mom, Mrs. W:

"It was a very hard relationship (with Shanann) as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't do anything right."

There is the “I” again. The poor me it’s all about me syndrome. Implied meaning is: of course this happened. SW was mean to me. Not saying that is true, but even if it was it has NO BEARING on this horrendous crime. Narcissists often come from narcissistic parents. It is well studied. I think we now see this even more clearly in this gut-wrenching case..

You're right. So much of those interviews was me, me, me. A few swats at SW, very little about Chris himself, and nothing more than a throwaway comment or two about the kids. It was all "I" and "me." And yet SW has been called "controlling" and "dominating"? Sure, Jan.

Exclusive: Parents of Chris Watts speak out after his murder plea deal

I was getting confused with the different interviews. I thought they were all the same.

WOW. <modsnip - unnecessary comment>To degrade their daughter in law. Murdered by their son. And never even express any emotion for their grandchildren.

As if Shannan’s parents need more grief.

Shanann's parents, Frank and Sandra Rzucek, issued the following statement about their daughter's relationship with Chris:

Shannan Watts was a faithful wife, and the most gentle and loving mother in the world to her children Bella, Celeste, and Nico. She was also the best daughter any parent could ever hope for. Shanann was a wonderful soul.

Everyone who knew Shanann knows this to be true. Even Chris Watts knows this to be true. Yet Chris Watts still chose to murder Shanann, Bella, Celeste, and Nico. Chris Watts still chose to dump the bodies of his own family in oil tanks. And Chris Watts still chose to lie about it until he could lie no more. He pled guilty to murdering his family because he is guilty.

Monday evening, the parents of Chris Watts gave an interview in which they attempted to defend their son. In doing so, they felt the need to make vicious, grotesque and utterly false statements about Shanann. Their false statements, however hurtful and inaccurate, will never alter the truth about Shanann, and will never alter the truth about the crimes committed by their son, Chris Watts.

Shanann's memory and reputation deserves to be protected. And her family is fully prepared to do so. “

What a dignified, beautifully written response. Certainly not something we will ever see from CW's family.

My God. This is just so vile. She’s dead at the hands of their son, and yet they continue to attack her.

I’m glad they concealed their faces though, I think all broadcast media should do the same.

And use the mute button...
Now that would be hilarious. Thanks for the laughs MassGuy :D

I cannot imagine how much the Rzuceks have wanted to say this on behalf of their murdered child. I’m simply in awe of the class and restraint they and everyone else who loved Shanann have displayed while these awful people have attempted to destroy her reputation. Good for them.

Jmo.

While I understand the inability to believe their son murdered his whole family, the lack of self awareness of how the mother is conducting herself in the interviews is so telling-all attack, no room for sympathy. Heartfelt and compassionate does not come to mind when listening to her speak. His father made the statement, if Chris did kill all of them I can accept that, I wonder if she is still speaking to him, lol. I bet he gets banned from further interviews. The lack of communication with their son is fueling much of this, but that is by Chris’s choice which they do not acknowledge. Shanaan’s family responded with grace and dignity, what a contrast between the two families. I wonder if the Watts have any appreciation that Sandy did not want to seek the death penalty.

Oh dear, I just read the interview with CW’s parents and all I can think is WHY WHY WHY would they sink to such a level by saying the things they did. I respect that they love their son no matter what, but dear Lord did no one advise them about what to say in public no matter what they were thinking or feeling in private? The backlash is going to be brutal I fear. You can love your child and “fight” for him as they apparently want to do, but attacking the victim to give the admitted killer a justification for his inhuman crime is beyond the pale. Someone should have stopped them. The fallout from this.....no words.
I believe the reason they are coming out now is because of the host from that podcast we aren’t supposed to talk about. That host has got in her mind she is some qualified reporter/lawyer/investigator/psychologist. I don’t get why his parents are taking their legal advice from this person but I believe 100% it is due to those hosts doing. Their main goal to do this now is to get a top lawyer to take this case on and go back on his plea. They believe his defense was incompetent and working with DA because they are state funded. They believe it is all a conspiracy and he was duped into it by his defense.

Is it substantiated that on Saturday night he had a babysitter for the girls, or is that just a rumor?

I always wonder the same thing. As I mentioned before, imagine how he must have felt if he was given an ultimatum that night, if he didn't leave his family he wouldn't have anything on the side anymore. The hatred towards his family that could have spurred, in a man who could not be honest, make a decision, go for divorce.

I agree the podcast started this. She feels the need to exhaust all measures to try and save her son.

“After the fact with the bodies, he said, ‘Dad, I could not put the girls with her after what she did — I could not put her with her ,’” Ronnie Watts said.

That last sentence, I have brought up again, indicates that CW insinuates, that due to SW's actions (???murdering the kids), that is why the bodies aren't together.
Perhaps CW stated this to his father, when he wanted to speak to him, to tell the truth.
As we know, he has never been truthful.
MOO.
Not having read the article yet, the first thought that pops into my head is, "remember the 24" circumference of the hole". Exactly the same size as my counter top electric kettle.

I think what CW's parents have said in these interviews paints a picture that is still consistent with CW being the only murderer that night.

CW said he was the calm one (like Bella) and Cece was 'gung ho' (like Shanann). CW's parents say he's always been calm.

Strangulation as a murder method is associated with a relatively calm, determined, quiet and deep loathing of the victim. If Shanann had got upset about CW telling her he wanted a divorce, is that how she'd be feeling about the girls? But that's CW's normal demeanor. So these murders were carried out in a way that is consistent with CW, from the mode of death to the cover up and the lying.

CW's mom has an image of CW of him as a little boy and a teen playing sports, someone who no one ever said a bad word about. What if his choice to plead now, before trial, before even a probable cause hearing where the DA would present the tip-of-the-iceberg version of evidence against CW, is because CW doesn't really want his parents to hear all that evidence, to hear that he's no longer mommy's perfect boy, that he's become a stinking, cheating, lying, conniving, cold-hearted murderer. Maybe CW doesn't want to go to court and have all the evidence against him presented and turn around and see the look of shame and disgust for him on his parents faces.

These interviews do not surprise me in the least. They just go to show that the apple does not fall far from the tree. The twisted, rotten, evil tree. The tree full of poison apples. That tree.

Exclusive: Parents of Chris Watts speak out after his murder plea deal
"It was a very hard relationship," said Cindy Watts, Chris' mother. "It was a very hard relationship (with Shanann) as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't do anything right."

The Wattses said their son changed once he met Shanann.

The Wattses said their son's relationship with Shanann was abusive and they felt she isolated Chris from his family in the time they were together.

Ronnie said he believes the initial thing Chris told police -- that he killed his wife only after finding out she had strangled their daughters.

"It's hard for me to believe that he would hurt them girls no matter what," he said. "The story he told me that night, I believed it: The way he looked at me, the way he was crying, I believed it."

They are hoping someone else might step up to defend Chris

"Shanann's parents, Frank and Sandra Rzucek, issued the following statement about their daughter's relationship with Chris:

"Shanann Watts was a faithful wife, and the most gentle and loving mother in the world to her children Bella, Celeste, and Nico. She was also the best daughter any parent could ever hope for. Shanann was a wonderful soul.

BBM: I totally agree.

I think it’s very unfortunate (<- deliberate understatement) that CW’s parents decided - and/or were advised/encouraged - to give these interviews, especially at this point in time.

While the interviews have done them and CW no favours whatsoever, and were quite revealing IMO, I do feel they (parents) may have been exploited/manipulated :(.

By asking what the "trigger" was, IMO she was really just asking what SW did to make him do what he did. I almost never get emotionally involved in cases, but all of those interviews really pissed me off.
Exactly. What was the trigger, what I want to know is what was the trigger. Trigger = What did she do to provoke him. It was her fault whether or not he's the one who did it.
And the other one HE WAS GOING TO LEAVE HER. (Not mentioning the affair(s), all the duplicity). If he didn't want to talk to them during 3 months in the slammer, how can we believe he talked to them about leaving Shan'ann, Bella, Cece and the growing Nico?

I know they don’t want the hassle but if I were shanann’s parents I would want to sue them for besmirching her name. How dare they!! And also, now we know where CW got the idea that everything he does is someone else’s fault.

I got physically ill reading their statement. If nothing else we all know that SW and the kids left for 6 weeks. So he had plenty of time by himself to file for divorce and get himself out of the house. But instead he spent that time plotting the murders of his wife and children.

I think CW took the plea so that his family would never know what he did. Hopefully it will still come out and show him for the evil murderer he is.

SW family is a class act for sure. That last sentence sounds like they are willing to sue to stop them defaming their daughter? Is that an option once a person is dead?

Can I ask? Do we definitely know that CW doesn't/didn't want to see his family? I ask, because all I got from the interviews was that they were not allowed to see him and when they did, it was separately, via remote access and monitored by his legal team. Is this usual?

This link to the interview with CW's parents should work for everyone as it's on YouTube.
