Forgive me if this has been discussed- why did they move to Colorado? Are either from there or have family there?

I read today that a friend moved there.
Not sure if that is why she went.

It does say in this article I read that they had to leave North Carolina pretty quickly. I don't know if that had to do with the bankruptcy or not.

Emotional and mental abuse, and master manipulator can be far worse than anything physical. I don't see domestic violence yet.
Respectfully, DV includes emotional and mental abuse. I agree it was very likely to have occurred in their relationship. :(

He confessed to his dad and no doubt his dad will have to testify in court against his son.
I hope he rots in hell! Wow is all I can say.
He deserves everything he gets!!!!
So so sad!!!!

It comes naturally to want to dismiss him and his actions as "pure evil" and neatly label him a "monster," then move on to the next thread about a similar family's destruction, but I'm not satisfied with that.

I'm sure there are others who feel the same way, too. I want to KNOW. . . not necessarily "why"-- because there's no answer to that basic question that could ever justify/rationalize his vicious actions.

Maybe it's the "what" that confounds me. There is so much about the human brain/mind that is still undiscovered. Perhaps it will always remain unknowable, but I think that there should be some sort of concerted, publicly-funded effort that draws together professionals from all walks of life (esp. psychiatry/ the law/ religion(?) / school, etc. etc.) to leave no stone un-turned in an effort to "sleuth" what the heck is going on!

That has to be a first step, right? Or am I being naive?
(rant over )

No. I agree with you. Nothing is black and white. Humans are complex and reasons for evil can be subtle.

If he was pure evil he never would've confessed unless already caught and bragging or wanting to further hurt someone.

I guessed he would confess soon because although he was emotionless and not acting at all concerned, he used some loaded words like "emotional", "traumatic" "ghost town" and he had a reaction when asked to spell his kids' names. Also, the words used at the presser before he confessed were a real signal to me that they felt they could get a confession and were appealing to his feelings.

I think he does have some feelings of remorse. Not like a normal person. But something.

Nevertheless I still think he's a disgusting being and I'd like to hurt him. Physically.

His evil may not be black and white but my anger is.

I see him as wimpy. I’d be surprised if he was abusive. I see Shannan as wearing the pants in the family.

Working in mental health services, and volunteering with domestic violence survivors, I can say without a doubt, that a common trait in men who are seen as "wimpy" by other men, are usually the ones who overcompensate by beating their significant others. With that said, it's not every abuser's trait.

So, I'm wouldn't be surprised if he was abusive (of course this is all speculation at this point).

Not that we know of. She's originally from N.J., moved w/ family
to N.C. met him there and married.
He looks to have always lived in N.C.
I wondered the same/ good question.

Not sure if this one has been posted- an older article about family annihilators.

Annihilators are overwhelmingly male (95 percent, he estimates), and mostly white and middle-aged. They feel inadequate as men and have often suffered childhood abuse. Having felt powerless as kids, many try to exert strict control over their households and seek to create an idealized version of family that they never experienced. When the economy is in decline, jobs are scarce, tensions are high, and the control these men seek becomes harder to maintain.

I think abusers are wimpy. They beat on women and children. They're cowards. Not tough guys. Not real men.

Thank you. I'm curious how long they were in NC together before moving. Traveling and haven't had a chance to look into much of these details.

Cutting off family support and relocating is a common abuse sign.

If she were planning on leaving my bet is the friend's home is where she was going. He caught wind of it before she got home and back to her kids....

This is why her friend was so in tune to the red flags!

Yep. I believe it was in the TV interview where he says that Shanann told him that night that she was going to a friend's house w/the girls, that was her plan for the next day. She probably did tell him that, maybe at an earlier time, and not just for a play-date but as a way out. People usually let loose a tiny bit of truth in their lies, it makes it easier to keep track of the story.

So many hidden details with an HOA - could be special assessment, fine, ...

A fine for WHAT? This was a new house in 2013, so it’s not like they are remodeling. I’m guessing a lousy $54/mo wasn’t being paid.

Emotional and mental abuse IS domestic violence. As is murder.

I wondered that too. To get away from his family? Because of an affair? Just desire?

They married in N.C. in 2012- not sure but I believe they moved
to Co. in 2013.
So you may be right about his taking her away from family and friends.

Many things...leaving a trash can in the drive way, letting a pet run loose, illegal parking, kids toys in the driveway, etc....HOA's are notorious for fines and violations. JMO

Not lousy to everyone. They have documented financial troubles that I'm assuming never completely went away after bankruptcy. It is quite possible they weren't paying the fees. If they had $8xx in the bank, they likely were having to prioritize other bills, food, etc over HOA fees.

Exactly. I was the president of my HOA for over 8 years. There were homeowners that had never paid a cent in the whole 8 years I was on the board. We had 7 homes with liens out of 48. We didn’t lien for fines. We only did for nonpayment of HOA dues.

Something interesting from that article:

"Family annihilators," as criminologists call them, are among the least-understood types of killers. Since the perpetrators usually either kill themselves or immediately confess, such cases tend to be solved quickly and disappear from the headlines

The audacity of requesting 48 hours notice. This defense attorney seems quite enthralled with having this hi-profile case to defend. They’re seemingly quite concerned also with the preservation of touch and trace DNA which could turn out to be exculpatory. Puh-lease.

See where this is headed? I find such massive concern with this mans “rights” nauseating. And he just sits there all entitled-looking. Ugh.

That's really just all standard criminal defense stuff. If you're going to be a public defender or criminal defense attorney you better request those things or you're committing malpractice.

But I certainly get why it rankles.

I'm just watching the helicopter from
That place if flat and open. Where did he put the bodies??? In one of those oil drums? But are they even accessible? There's like nothing, IMO, for hiding bodies! And how was he going to answer WHY the bodies were at his workplace when they were found?

I don't know if this was planned or not, but I am grateful he is stupid!
This is pretty much how the landscape is anywhere around this area. Flat, grassy, dry, limited trees.
