In 1983, 22-year-old University of Colorado student Sid Wells was murdered in his apartment. Wells was headed about to enter his senior year at the University. He was shot in the back of his head, "execution style," on August 1, in the condo where he lived, owned by his mother. The case received a lot of attention, because he was at that time dating a daughter of Robert Redford.
From the beginning, the only POI was 24-year-old Thayne Smika, who rented a room from Wells. A grand jury was convened, but determined there was insufficient evidence to bring Smika to trial. Police lost track of Smika's whereabouts in 1986.
In 2011, police procured a warrant for Smika on murder charges. Police believe he is living in California under an assumed identity, but after 27 years have little to go on. They made a Spanish language video for distribution to authorities in Mexico.
The article from which I drew this information lists no vitals for Smika, but photographs seem to indicate he's fairly tall.
